This tutorial video explores the art of hollow cast plastic. Rotational molding, or rotocasting, is a quick and inexpensive way to reproduce an object in lightweight plastic.
This video is the first in a series of tutorial videos I will be producing for this channel.
I made rotocasting machine with metal I had around my shop and bearings, bushings, metal collars, sprockets, and gears from a local bearings supplier. The total cost of materials was around $300, and the project took about a weekend to produce.
The mold is made from MDF and Smooth-On ReoFlex® 40 urethane rubber.
The urethane plastic used in the video is Smooth-On Smooth-Cast® 65D.

Great video! Instructional and entertaining...... a rare but successful mix. I learned more about the subject by watching this 1 video than I did from all of the other videos I watched combined. Thanx!

Thank you for this video, it answered many questions. The plastic bottle made me understand what goes on in the process. Equally as important was cutting the resin, it gave me an idea of the proportional amount of resin needed to produce that shell. Thank you for going that extra step.

Sorry, I didn't use plans to build this machine. I started with the inside frame and worked my way out, solving problems as I went along. I looked at various machines on youtube and chose the style that fit my needs, was within my budget, and was appropriately challenging for my skill level. If you start your own project and get stumped, you can come back and drop me a line.

This video was so well done. Now I need one of those machines!! The music was great too, made me think of Clarissa Explains it All :) What kind of rubber do you use for the molds?

This is a very very silly video, but it is a great example of how basic rotational molding works.

hi, could you please tell me the size/ ratio of the sprockets you are using? after some experimenting i am currently working with 3:2, which works better than 2:1 (it looks like you are working with 1:2). does switching the gears position within the mashine make a difference?

Can i use a fibber glass mould for rotomolding? What can i use for avoid the material get glued to the mould? Thanks Great Video!
@benedictclass
@benedictclass 9 лет назад
Miguel Díaz Fiberglass molds are fine as long as there are no undercuts and the inside is free of surface defects. The same goes for vacuformed molds. Without a flexible mold, precision is very important. I use a Smooth-On universal mold release.

Do you think it would be possible to rotocast something in wax?
@benedictclass
@benedictclass 9 лет назад
I have slosh cast wax by hand and it has a gradual setting cycle, so it could very well be possible, but most of the time it would be simpler to just drain the molten core after the desired thickness hardens on the surface.

I'm no expert, but I think you'd probably have to make the ears separately. But for the main mask, most likely yes!

I don't, know how to help with your exact set of questions, but I can suggest several thin coats is an easy way to trial and error into the correct amount of resin without being wasteful.
