Prescribed Fire Technology: Plastic Sphere Dispenser (PSD) Machine Overview 

Cultural and prescribed fire projects use different kinds of ignition methods to achieve their objectives.
During the Xwisten Cultural Burn, completed in spring 2024, specialists used hand and aerial ignition methods to cover the 150-hectare project area. Aerial ignitions were done using the Plastic Sphere Dispenser (PSD). The PSD machine allows specialists to safely, and precisely apply fire to a large area.
Using the PSD machine helped the crew working on the Xwisten project safely and effectively reintroduce fire into the ecosystem to help with medicinal plants and wildfire risk reduction.
