Jada Pinkett Smith has been very open about her struggles with alopecia. But some have speculated that the hair loss is due to a browlift, NOT alopecia! What does America's Holistic Plastic Surgeon Dr. Youn think?

Anyone who has ever seen someone with alopecia areata knows that no matter how closely shaved the head is, you can still see the circular patches that have absolutely no follicles. You'd literally have to shave your head with a cutthroat razor at least once a day, and even then, when the slightest shadow of stubble appears you'll see the patches. It was pretty lazy and arrogant of her to not even bother researching the condition she claims to have. There are plenty of other things she could have pretended to have, like telogen effluvium after having covid for one.

That line usually happens from wigs and weaves stressing the hair follicles and that line is exactly where the edge of the wig gets secured. If you get the same style for months at a time, it’s stresses and breaks off the hair and damages the scalp causing balding.

I have androgenic alopecia, which is another name for hereditary hair thinning. Jada does not look like she has hair loss anywhere. I have visibly noticed thinning in my crown area. I just wish she would not falsify stuff like this. The stubble on her head shows that her hair is growing in just fine. Choosing to shave one’s head does not make one have alopecia.

I AGREE just looks like a shaved head to me. She has a full head of hair stubble across her entire head. Doesn’t line up with alopecia at all. Alopecia doesn’t necessarily mean bald, plus can have flares, just like many other medical conditions. It can be cyclical, as well as affect certain areas while other areas remain “normal.” Some people cope with this inability to control their own bodies by making the choice to shave their heads, which would explain the stubble in that video.

This looks like "wig line" traction alopecia. I've personally known stage actors that developed this as a result of sensitivity to glue. She has another linear strip on the side of her head that would be correct placement for hair pieces and, given that she is/was a musical performer, would make sense. TLDR she's full of it.

I knew as soon as I saw it, that it was from a brow lift. I’m a hairdresser and I’m very familiar with the scars due to plastic surgery. Another explanation is her hair loss has been caused from traction to the roots of the hair due to braiding. This constant pulling will actually stress the roots so much, they die. Braiding can also be used to provide a base that wefts and hair pieces can be hand sewn to. This allows a wig, hair piece or fall to be securely attached to the head to allow for swimming, showering and exercise. All this stress over time to our hair can cause permanent hair loss.

I wondered this as I suffered from Alopecia on the sides due to autoimmune illness (I have Lupus SLE) AND when I was younger I pulled my hair too tight on the sides into barrettes on top. It caused weakening of the hair and shaft and loss of hair as well. I hide it well, but a little bit never came back on the sides. Careful ladies hair IS sensitive and you can damage yours permanently. Thankfully there are wonderful products and remedies that are hugely beneficial for hair. A relaxed, natural hair style is good for regrowth, and I used a combo of supplements good for hair growth especially adding in Keranique products as well as Viviscal. It worked wonders for me. 😁 For the record I HAVE NO SCARS HOWEVER.

Me too! First, I have a genetic condition called "EDS," and under that umbrella is also SLE, Sjogren's, Scleroderma, RA, OA. Needless to say, it's a rough road to have to travel from childhood on; however, parental guidance, and a great childhood doctor set me on the right mindset and path for dealing with it all. Thank God literally that my hair has always been extremely thick, or I'd be bald by now. My brows used to be beautiful, but must now be penciled on. No one would ever know how serious my health issues are, and I'm glad for that; however, my hair is a big deal for me, so my quest is to keep it as healthy as possible and not lose any more!

The scar is old. It honestly looks like permanent follicle damage due to wearing braids, wigs or weaves. Braiding can cause irreversible tension or traction based alopecia which can leave scars very similar to hers if it’s repeated. It’s interesting I’ve seen no BP talking about it because we know that there is likely a clear factor related to alopecia even if she doesn’t want to talk about it. Chemical burns due to color, perms, relaxers can also cause that type of permanent scarring. Jada was forever coloring and relaxing her hair, as well as braiding her hair. Because BW tend to manipulate our hair a lot, getting some form of hair loss or alopecia later in life is a real probability, So many people of no color fail to understand that people of color tend to scar (scars both light, dark, raised and flat) VERY easily due to keloids or melanin especially around the head, face and neck. My cousin bit me when I was 8 years old on my décolleté area. A tiny scar that should’ve healed easily, but I’m over 50 and can still see and feel that tiny 3/8” keloid scar. Same thing on my knee. I fell around 11-12 and have what looks like healed road rash about an inch in near perfect circumference. I was running a race and landed or rather skidded on concrete. To look at it you’d think it had happened just a couple of years ago, not 40. I would’ve honestly appreciated you talking about those more plausible factors vs reinforcing potential inaccuracies without providing a more likely cause. Although I appreciate the squashing of the brow lift theory. ♥️

I dont know what Jada is dealing with. I do know that I watched a Red Table talk episode that made me cry. The episode was about women who decided to cut their hair almost completely off for different reasons. In that episode Jada uplifted those women by giving them a make over by a celebrity stylist. It didn't matter what the reason was for their decision to cut the hair. BUT in that same video she said that she had no medical reasons to cut her own hair and that she just did it. That reading or hearing about hair holding energy and she'd wanted to do it for a while and how freeing it was once she did. I remember she mentioned Alopecia but said she did not have Alopecia. Now almost 2 years later she does have it? God bless her is all I know . One of my daughters has bald spots of different sizes sprinkled through out her hair. She has been diagnosed yet but It looks nothing like what Jada "has".

That line looks like result of hair weave traction. Traction alopecia. Common in older women in the salon that wore weaves often when younger. That spot also looks like hair loss due to the interior clips/combs of wigs. Most traction alopecia from weaves seems to be at the edges because they are the weakest. Some women leave their edges out of weaves in order to save them from being ripped out. So its common to have the weave start farther back on the head like that area Jada has trouble with. In the salon we also see bald lines like that in the ponytail area due to ponytail extensions. A straight or square hair piece or weave track will pull the hair out in straight lines like that. A round hair piece will cause rounded or circle bald spots

The straight line is most likely an eyebrow lift because even though she has naturally high brows, they do droop as you get older. I've seen many people with alopecia as well as watched videos, I've never seen a straight line happen with alopecia. Only patches.. Not too mention people with alopecia don't call it an illness. I don’t think she’s got alopecia. I think her hair has thinned as she’s aged. It’s pretty typical for women. Mine has. As far as the scar goes, could be brow lift or could be simply she had an accident and now there’s a scar. I think she’s going through her midlife crisis. Seeing she’s aging. Wanting to seek out a medical explanation to cover for her thinning hair. Because this literally came out of left field. She probably freaked out as a person does and shaved her head out of frustration. She looks like based on stubble she’s got hair. Just maybe not as much as she used to.

Agree with you. My long auburn mane thinned with age :( Simple solution when I go out (other than grocery store or mundane errands) is a single strip extension in the middle, not to add length, but volume, and some gentle teasing at the scalp area in about 4 separate layers all the way around. Looks just like my hair did before the age related thinning, and hides the extension strip perfectly.

Dr Gary Linkov has also made a video about the same thing a while back, and he also being someone with Alopecia Ariata, also mentioned the line on Jada's head as looking like something from a plastic surgery procedure. You can also see from his videos the progression of the condition on his hair and appearance, something I cannot see in Jada. Okay, she may have shaved off her hair but as someone who has black hair, you can still see the hair on her head, which does not look like how Dr Linkov's looked like.

When I was 12 my hair started falling out in the back under my hair. I showed my sister when it was the size of a half dollar and begged her not to tell my mom. A few weeks later I showed my sister again, and by then it was like a 2 1/2 in. x 3 in. spot bald. My mom took me to a country doctor, he told her it was alopecia, he gave her this liquid medication to swab the area daily. He told her maybe it would grow back or maybe not. It grew back in very thinly/fine hair. Never completely grew in thick. Now many years later I have psoriasis, it first cropped up all over that same area and my hair is very thin again in this area. Fortunately for me mine is in the back under hair and not real noticeable. With all my psoriasis I worry about the alopecia reactivating... I never had scarring to my knowledge only very thin hair in that area.

Thats a noticeably raised scar and damaged follicles, thats not what loss of root looks like. Maybe she does have it, but the spots she saying are alopecia spots aren't, they are scar tissue from something else. Which yes would cause hairloss, but that doesn't straight up translate into alopecia or atleast in the technical sense when we think of it. It doenst look like traction alopecia especially looking at the texture, if you look up what a traction scar looks like you know what i mean. it looks like she had some sort of like you suggested brow lift or chemical scarring, its too thick and raised to be of any autoimmune variety of alopecia, and she doenst have any visible sores or other in the area to suggest other scalp conditions in tangent that could lead to such a keloid. Looks like my brothers scar. As kids we fought over the remote a lot and one time I got him good in the head with the remote. Not as big, but healed like that. Which leads me further to believe it was an injury more of the physical kind than the tension or chemical kind. Friends forehead healed the same when she cut her forehead in an accident. That was an incision at one point. Again maybe she does have a very mild case of alopecia (I can't look at her scalp in person afterall) but those spots she's showcasing as such aren't, I can see enough detail to know that.

I did find it very odd seeing that line across. I thought, at first, that it looked like a surgical scar....Alopecia usually appears in circular patches. My cousin has a type of Lupus, not the systemic one, that makes her lose her hair. Hers are in circles. Not a straight line. Maybe she does have alopecia, but because she knows the scar will be noticeable, she uses that excuse to cover up. Her eyes do look different though to when she was younger.

When I pull back my hair, you can only see the scar at the frontal part of my head. So, say no further than the mid eyebrow. So, she very well could have had something done, and also having the money she has...she could had had some laser or other scar treatment. Blah, blah, blah. I'm going to leave it at that. It could also be from working in and industry where extensions and wigs can cause hair loss. So might it be possible she has both? Quite frankly she looks stunning bald. I can't imagine losing your hair as an adult women from alopecia or anything else. Hair is part of us, our style, confidence, and societies definition that definition = or is related to gorgeous hair. I lost my hair in 2016 during chemo. I knew it would eventually grow back, yet I was still embarrassed. At 1st I drew on my eyebrows, glues on lashes, and wore wigs. It for to a point during treatment I was so exhausted, I stopped caring about things like that which were silly, stop caring if people stared, and just focused on what mattered most keeping a positive mindset, pushing thru the treatments, and getting better for my kiddos. Because in the end I wanted to still be there for them for the next 30 years. It no longer mattered if people stared at my bald head and missing eyebrows and lashes or judged me, the only opinions that I valued was theirs the two amazing little humans that mean the most to me. My lashes, brows, and hair came back with time. My once thick long straight hair, is now finer and surprise it came back curly. So now I have beach waves every day 🙃. Jada has shared she won't have that same Luxury hers will not grow back. I think we should focus on the strength and bravery it took her to not hide it with wigs. Yet publicly share her diagnosis and decide to be natural and embrace what she looks like now. I think folks should remember her career was based not only on her talent, it was also based on her looks. And the industries skewed definition of what they define is beautiful. Which is B.S. No I don't think its acceptable to Crack jokes about her or anyone who has shared they are navigating a life altering illness. Whether visible or hidden. I think the focus needs to shift from people trying to be detectives and find out "if she really has alopecia ". And shift to treating her the way we wanted to be treated. With kindness, empathy, and compassion. Or simply just mind our buisness. It's simple. The Golden Rule treat others the way you want to be treated. We all learned it in Kindergarten. We are also all guilty (me included) in forgetting that rule sometimes and just being versions of ourselves we really don't want to be. I wish her and anyone else struggling with anything publicly or privately Good Vibes and Good Things. The 🌎world is a mess right now, Global Pandemics, people losing loved ones, war and deplorable war crimes in Ukraine, inflation, people and families in financial crisis, mental health 😢 struggles taking lives, environmental crisis. Heck we all can go on and on about the things we should be focusing on, commenting on, and questioning. Imo that sure as heck isn't Jada Pinket Smith. It's also not right to use her alopecia announcement as a distraction to get our minds off of the things we should be concerned about. Okay I'm stepping down from my 🧼📦 📢soap box. I'm not saying I'm right or anyone is wrong. Just sharing my opinion. By all means feel free to agree or disagree. Either way I truly wish everyone health, good vibes, and a great week. 👍
