Seoul, South Korea's capital, is at the heart of a growing obsession to look perfect.
In the Apgujeong district of Seoul, the streets are lined with endless rows of plastic surgery clinics. Business is booming. In South Korea, v-shaped jaws, double eyelids and dimpled smiles are all the rage and people from across the nation, and the world, are flocking to the clinics for plastic surgery, supporting an industry worth $5bn a year.
More than 4,000 clinics provide cosmetic surgery in Seoul, with an estimated 650,000 people a year going under the knife.
But the surgeries performed by some of the clinics do not always live up to patients' expectations and the quest for beauty and profits is putting lives at risk.
So Yi Yoon has suffered many medical problems since having plastic surgery, including not being able to close one of her eyes. She now works two jobs to pay off her debts and is suffering from depression.
On this edition of 101 East, we look at what is driving the growth of this booming business and at what price to individuals and the wider Korean society?
101 East delves into Korea's plastic surgery craze and uncovers the real price of pursuing physical perfection.

What's so sad is that no matter how much plastic surgery you have if you don't love yourself you will never be happy. Surgery doesn't automatically grant you self esteem. It comes from the inside!

If you are bullied for your appearance then it can help your self esteem. Bullying can affect a person for their whole life. Appearance matters more than people think. If someone looks different or is below average then their life will be difficult. Since most people are average, people think that unattractive means not putting enough effort. That's not true for everyone. If you look up other Korea plastic surgery videos you can see some people who had deformations that were fixed with surgery. Ones that affect the jaw can affect speech and eating, and also cause chronic pain.

i haven't gotten plastic surgery yet (i am thinking about a nose job though) but there's a difference in my self esteem when i am wearing makeup vs when im not. i feel like if there's something you're really insecure about, if you can hide it, you will automatically feel better about yourself

I am S. Korean and I am saddened to see these plastic surgeons use their patients insecurities against them just so they can line their pockets with more money. The surgeries aren't magic wands that instantly transforms their self esteem. Those feelings still exist and can't be cut off.

@@oppa808 I know what you mean, and don't disagree with you in the least. The facial surgery thing has become the norm over there, and it's sad how shallow the social pressures can be, no matter what part of the world we're in... But I think we can all relate to this quote in different ways, not just as it relates to beauty. The underlying message of this quote is about finding a way to be secure with yourself, accepting yourself, and loving yourself the way you are, because other people don't live your life.

Beauty is subjective... In Asia, especially Korea, having prominent cheekbones & jaws isn’t considered beautiful. They want smaller faces. Which is so different compared to Western beauty bc everyone admires Angelina Jolie for her strong facial structure. Lots of Koreans (not all) are known for having a prominent face shape which is probably why that feature isn’t desired since it’s more common for them.

Exercise, weight loss (or gain) does alter your bone structure. Obviously, it won't do anything dramatic, but, believe it or not, your bones (including your skull) adapt. Also, I think Americans and many western countries have a more open mind about what beauty is. We can find Angelina Jolie beautiful as well as Audrey Hepburn at the same time. We have people of all races and sizes around us and society is trying to get us to appreciate (and manipulate) from all directions.

Its hard when everything is based on image. Experiencing the abuse before, Im thankful i live in a more liberal society. When i visited Indonesia to visit fam, i ended up abusing laxatives because EVERYONE, literally everyone, would call me fat before they even said hi! Especially people i didnt know. I even got talked into doing injections. Thank goodness there hasnt been any issues (been 10 years). I faced it back home in the US when i integrated with the indo community. And i remember the discussions I participated in *unwillingly* and ones i overheard. Talking down people for wearing the same bags....suggesting bleaching skin....doing surgeries. Its vain and disgusting. The entire community that do this needs to be revived. The support for self love needs to increase!

Something they got a bit wrong is that almost all girls get $ from parents to perform the surgery as a high school graduation gift. There are very few exceptions to this. There is a lot of pressure to do these surgeries from the society, including job opportunities that become a lot more likely for girls that have a certain look. The surgery for men is becoming a lot more common too, with many men feeling obligated to look certain way. Korea has a really twisted society that shames people into certain looks and even though there is a lot of pressure from the new generation that the change is needed, clinics like the ones in the report make it practically impossible as the money flow buys the government votes which silences the critics. Fun fact: My dog's vet downstairs here in Seoul has had at least 4 surgeries and I often pity the guy for feeling so insecure, even though his career and personal life are generally good.

@DanaidV
@DanaidV 6 лет назад
Actually, that's not the problem. The problem is society's inability to link all these things together to understand how constantly judging people for how they look and shaming people is hugely detrimental to their society as a whole. Also, Koreans refuse to openly discuss depression, mental illness (they have one of the highest rates of non-treated bipolar disorder because of the social shame attached to mental illness), or suicide. Youth suicide is one of the highest in the world, due to an overly competitive society, rigid attitudes about what it means to be successful, Korean pride and inability to talk openly for fear of "losing face". All these elements are contributing to the inability of Korean society to deal in a more open and positive way with these issues. Korea has a very good medical system, and there are psychiatrists and counselors out there, there is treatment, but you can be ostracized and shamed by your company if they find out you are going for treatment, even for marriage counseling. So it's the social/judgmental attitudes that are the problem here.

It's becoming a society where they all look identical. There's no distinguishing characteristics, nothing that makes them unique anymore. They're all becoming clones....the same nose, the same v shaped face, the same eyes and lips. Natural is beautiful, but more so, who you are on the inside is vastly more important than being "beautiful." I'd love to see a day where a man or woman can look into the mirror and say, "I just love myself. I'm perfect the way I am."

Reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode "Number 12 Looks Just Like You" where everyone gets to choose a plastic surgery makeover from a catalog on their 18th birthday. Basically, nobody is considered beautiful unless they've had a complete physical transformation, but everyone ends up becoming clones of each other. It's a sad episode (then again, most TZ episodes are) and eerily similar to the current obsession with beauty.

For the woman with the botched plastic surgery - i guess she learned the hard way to accept and love yourself the way you are. But now its even harder for her to do that because she thinks she is deformed (I didnt notice anything except maybe one eye is not symmetrical but its so minor i would not have noticed without her pointing it out). Its so obvious the root cause of all this unnecessary plastic surgery is lack of true self love and acceptance by oneself.

Lets be honest unattractive people are treated differently than attractive people. They are bullied. Attractive people are treated with a lot more respect and get a lot more attention. So who wouldn't want to be attractive and look their best and a lot of people have to resort to plastic surgery to achieve that. It is their life and their body and their money so they can do whatever they want with it.

Sally Green I agree with this. I had a classmate in upper secondary school and she looked like a Swedish Megan Fox (naturally without any cosmetic enhancements) and everyone treated her extremely well because she was the most goodlooking girl in school. She never had to put in effort for people to like her and she came from a wealthy family as well. Me on the other hand I was pretty much bullied by some girls that was a part of her gang, so yeah being a woc and bullied almost my entire life for looking different (read: not white, constantly picked on for being short/dwarf and that my nose looked long). I can see why people want to enhance themselves.

I'm a Korean and I can say that plastic surgery has become more integrated in the Korean society; more than ever with the more competitive college and job market. Since there are so many well-qualified, and even more over-qualified candidates, employers don't only look at grades and experiences. They also look at their family background, physique, and look because it boils down to the company's image. Good-looking, smart employees = better image for company = better chance of business partnership and marketing. As any good parents would, they want to provide the best future for their kids. So it almost becomes necessary for their kids to go under the knife so they can get into the best colleges and the best companies. Truly sad how the judgemental-aspect of the culture steers the wrongs for "good intentions".
@hanakim2212
@hanakim2212 6 лет назад
I get what you are saying but wtf are you talking about with college? Colleges never picked people based off looks, and many other countries like Switzerland and Germany require the photos for job resumes as well, and most likely many avoided foreigners. And you do realise there’s more Koreans who don’t do plastic surgery than those who do? You shouldn’t state as if it’s the same for everyone..

cough drop tbh it's not just South Korea, Eurocentric standard of beauty is everywhere, especially in Asia. Where I grew up, having a narrow and tall nose is considered ideal, some people don't even care what the heck the rest of your face looks like as long as you have that, you're pretty lol. Ironically, we weren't born with those features, being half white is considered ideal. Local celebrities are usually mixed or mestizos/mestizas.

维亚 I seen plenty of good looking people without long straight perfect noses yes the nose is the centrepiece of your face therefor it could really affect how you look but reality is everyone looks different beauty can be found anywhere the only reason We find something beautiful is because of our surroundings media and what not, truly what is and what was beauty years ago when media didn't exist

cough drop It's the sad reality. I don't really mind people getting plastic surgery, heck I'd even do it if I had the money, cause people should do what they want with their bodies. But the sad part is the extreme pressure to look "perfect" that these people had to go through.

Who's watching 2019? Before considering plastic surgery to be beautiful, first watch those documentary with extremely rare disease that doctors are having a hard time to find cure and figure out what it is. Those people who had and experienced it prayed and hopeful to cure them and be happy with healthy life. Then after watching it you will be grateful that you are not like them. You will thank our Lord that we are healthy unlike them. And you will feel sorry and will be asking for forgiveness for being ungrateful to yourself. We are all beautiful remember that, we are just different from each other.

You try to sound wise, but that's not actually true. Countless people, perhaps a majority, come out of cosmetic surgery feeling more confident about themselves and improving their quality of life. Don't just listen to the scare stories and do your research on cosmetic surgery. For the most part, it goes well and improves people's perception of themselves. Also, cosmetic procedures are a spectrum all the way from teeth whitening to those stories of people trying to look like a Barrie doll or anime character through surgery. I imagine you'd probably draw a line of what is acceptable somewhere on the spectrum rather than black or white for or against cosmetic procedures.
@Nadia72639
@Nadia72639 8 лет назад
+Sheldon Pooper 1 Sadly, it is true that people sometimes disregard the positive benefits of plastic surgery. We have to remember that South Korea is a completely different society and they may not hold the same stigmas towards cosmetic procedures. As they said in the video, many employers look at appearance and more often than not, they have to send in a headshot with their resume, so they have to be attractive in order to even function and be a part of society :/ I believe, that when they say, "If your desire is to be more beautiful, then you'll forever think that you're ugly" means that if you want to become beautiful, your idea of "beautiful" may not even be achievable in real life. Unfortunately, it is very common that people can become "knit-picky" about their appearance and be unhappy with the slightest flaw or sometimes it isn't even a flaw, just their normal features. There is also a possibility of people going overboard with plastic surgery. You can change your appearance hundreds of times, but you may never be satisfied if you don't have confidence in yourself and not give into pressure. I think that giving high schoolers plastic surgery as a gift from their parents for graduating may have negative consequences. They aren't even fully matured yet, so they may regret it in the future or their face may change as they become full grown adults.

Though America is no stranger to this level of superficiality, I feel this particular situation is infinitely more disturbing with these blatant prevailing gray areas allowing for dangerously half-assed work. It's shameful that these staff can look each other in the eye before each operation and pretend that they aren't playing with the lives of the desperately insecure for a living. Medical procedure is no game and it certainly shouldn't be endorsed as such. I don't understand how their government can be so complacent.

FARIKA LINES Beauty standards only exist to peddle products. It's all one massive scam. You need to wear specific clothes to be fashionable. You're told you're ugly if you don't use makeup and shave. It goes on and on. Always ask who's profiting from all this. Hint: it's not you or your wallet, it's the companies that provide the things you're told you need.

A good surgeon is always a tiny bit nervous about doing operations, even if he has done the same type of operation over thousand times with no problems. A good surgeon never promises the results will turn out perfect. A good surgeon never says it's safe, because he knows there's risks, and he should tell you. A good surgeon will ask you why do you want the surgery. If he thinks your having surgery for the wrong reasons, he will refuse to operate. A bad surgeon just wants your money. He will say anything to get you to have an operation. He might even try to talk you into having other procedures to be done. He will say the operation is safe. He will rush the operations, because he will have lots of other operations to do in one day. Always research the surgeon's medical background, and if he has malpractice lawsuits/done botched surgeries.

Samantha Peters Normally, if you have a customer you have to respond to their needs. You can’t just say « no u don’t need the ps goodbye » that’s not how the world works. I’m pretty sure that someone that decides to have ps has already thought it through and made the best decision for them. The job of a surgeon is to do the surgery and listen to the customer to make money for his business, not to get them to give up on surgery. So technically you’re wrong. U don’t know the basics at all so don’t write nonsensical comments
@cheekysignpost9403
@cheekysignpost9403 6 лет назад
No, people don't always think things through, haven't you heard in the video that even parent buy the surgeries to their kids that are maybe 16 years old. The doctor hasn't stated any risks (at least not in front of the camera) even after she kinda questioned anaesthetics, which is just plain wrong, at least where I live. You have to respond to customers, but if people do surgeries because well everyone does it would be healthier to ones psychology to decline sometimes. I am well aware that probably most surgeons don't do it, but saying that a person is stupid for having some hope in them... smh

Samantha Peters This is very true, I had a skype video consultation with Dr Anil Shah 4 years ago, who is one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons in the US and he said to me that he would not operate on me. He said that in strange way my nosehump makes my nose look shorter than what it is and I can see what he meant now. I showed a picture of Doutzen Kroes nose and tbh Im grown up in a scandinavian country so I always felt odd and ugly looking for having a droopy nosetip. He could have easily taken my money for a rhinoplasty since I really wanted to have a nosejob, but instead he refused and said that he doesn't see how he could improve my nose from the frontview and that there are tons of risks with rhinoplasty. I also emailed Vladimir Grigoryants who probably is the best surgeon after Jeffrey Rawnsley, and he emailed me back and said that my nose would be easy to fix. Thing is regardless of how good a surgeon is there are always nosejob cases where people end up with an overly pinched nose or botched nose. So for now a filler will do.

LifeSucks Well I think that you're the one wrong! A surgeon should decide whether or not he will operate his patient. He must be sure that the patient really understands the risks , that this is something he really wants, that he did not decide this After one Bad day.
