Today we are going to build an intake from scratch with some basic plastic welding technics. I think that plastic welding is a great way to create cool stuff and do it on a budget. Budget fabrication projects are hard to find but using plastic instead of aluminum or steel is definitely a great place to start. What are some other fabrication projects you would like to see built out of plastic? Let me know if you have a cool idea and I will give it a shot!

In the old days, we used a concentrated heated air unit like a super hair dryer with a concentrator nozzle. The welding rod was basically the same thing as the stuff used on your line trimmer to cut grass. It worked, but wasn't perfect. It was called Thermoplastic welding.

You can still get a thermoplastic welder - even harbor freight has one works well enough and no waiting on thick layers of glue to dry

It's still done this way. The water tanks on fire trucks are plastic sheets thermo welded. When they need repaired a tool similar to a soldering iron with air and rod is how it's done.

Love it! You rarely see people use plastic techniques beyond just repairing bumpers. I had the unfortunate experience of ripping a bumper clean off and spending hours melting/repairing it. The whole time, I was thinking that it might work well for actual part fabrication.

Sanding the poly/abs rough and some jb weld meant for plastic should hold well imo. But Dylans shoe goo idea maybe better with the flexibility side of things. Epoxy has a tendency to crumble over time with vibration.

Looks really good, my only suggestion would be maybe coat it in some spray bed liner. I think it would be a better and more uniform finish.

Keep in mind plastic encompasses hundreds of materials and there's an equal number of adhesives to bond or weld them together in various ways. You could spend days on data sheets and application charts to figure it out.

To firmly attach disimular plastics Contact 3M Adhesives Technical Dept.Also consider nutserts for plastic. Brass EZ LOK or Aluminum Nutserts for plastic. Weld or glue a simular plastic dowel spacer then tape and thread the spacer to accept the hardware of your choosing.. Also to determine plastic types there is the "burn test". Burn a piece of unknown type plastic and observe the way the plastic burns, the flame color, the smoke color.

Nate this is so timely, last weekend i repaired a torn rear flare on my tj with a pencil tip soldering iron and some zip ties as filler. that steel mesh would have made the job a bit easier!

Pre cleaner is worth every cent. I've run one for almost 2 years and I'm still clean in the air box. A few bees, probably came in when parked, 95% less dust and dirt for the miles driven. Better air flow and lower AIT's.

JB Weld Plastic bonder epoxy works really well on all plastics in my experience. It’s kinda runny and then sets up all of a sudden so you need to make sure whatever it is is sorta flat while you work with it. It’s super strong and lasts a long time and I’ve used it on plenty of things on my vehicles and in the house over the years

G-flex 2 part epoxy will work for the oval piece. If you want too, you can add west systems 440 to the epoxy to add even more strength. We do this on boats all the time

I don’t work with many plastics, but total boat thixo is easy to use and sticks to everything I’ve ever put it on.

My old VW LT35 van dash requires several decades of repair in it. Have used plastic ‘welding’ on several projects the last repair was on the pump and filter housing on my daughters Land Rover Freelander TD4. Despite not trying too hard ended up with a ‘neat ish’ repair .. that no one will actually see.. but it’s strong and made an unsightly thing look much better..

at our autobody shop we use sikaflex 221 for literally any adhesive/seam sealing jobs, the stuff is awesome

Hi, hey Just go back to the hardware store HD or Lowes, Ace any of them will have ABS to PVC glue it works for both. I built a plastic water tank with a plastic welder. There are plastic welding rods for different plastics. I bought a hot air gun that was designed to pin point heat, looks a lot like the wire welder you have. So you just use the pin point heat to weld just like a torch or tig gun, works fine and the two pieces are welded just like metal. Let it cool and your are good to go.

I have a piece of advise for all those interested. When doing these projects: even on a BUDGET, you can buy or save to buy the tools for the project you have planned, then before you know it you have a decent set of tools!! If it’s a 1 time project and a SPECIALTY TOOL that you may not ever use again, check in to rental tools or loaner tools. That’s a great option also.

You need a "small" 4'x2'...Paint booth. You can do projects like this without smelling up the whole shop. I got a portable spray booth on Amazon and now I can paint models inside and not have to wait for a nice calm day to paint outside. You would obviously need some thing more industrial than what I got.

My stormtrooper armor is ABS and I used acetone slurry. You take acetone and pieces of ABS plastic in a jar and make a past. It’s very solid and drys faster.

Great video. It looks good. If you are worried about strength and appearance you can get sheets of fiberglass and resin. That would add a lot of durability and would make it look like one unifom piece

Wow this is great, didn’t even know you could do that with plastic. I was thinking of using room-temp-setting carbon fiber to make an airbox but this may be easier or perhaps can use both

In the body shop for poly plastics we use a product called 3m ez sand multi purpose repair material. Works perfectly, it can be sanded, fast dry time, and is a better material to use instead of traditional bondo for plastic repairs.

You can use an Acrylic PVC/ ABS Plastic Bender 110V Bending Machine to bend the plastic at the seams and have less joints to weld together

@Dirt Lifestyle Home made ABS slurry is best for the ABS welding and adhering to other plastics: Take an old glass jar with lid, that has a wide mouth (e.g. pickle jar). Fill half way with Acetone. Add your ABS scraps that fit in jar, no more than half the volume of Acetone already in jar. Place lid on jar and set it in a cool location not exposed to sun or anything more than 80°. Don't take lid off but swish jar around, daily, for a couple of days until ABS and Acetone make a light glue. Unlid and take a chip brush to thoroughly mix and to test thickness on scrab ABS. It should have the consistency of condensed milk (you can make it as thick as store bought ABS glue by adding more ABS scrap or thinner by adding more Acetone but the condensed milk thickness is easiest to sand and more importantly, adhere to non ABS plastic. Also to refresh the slurry as it dehydrates over time, just add more Acetone and a day later mix, and then more ABS.). To prep the non ABS plastic, sand it w/rough grit in the areas to be married to ABS. Use a combo of the staples and ABS slurry (and always clamp the married pieces tight to eachother and let sit over night). Look up videos on 'ABS slurry' and 'forming ABS' (there are widely used and simple techniques in the car audio world). Also, you would be amazed at what you can form 1 single piece of ABS into, using nothing more than a heat gun, some clamps and a few small pieces of 2x4.

I watched a few videos of a guy repairing kayaks and other plastic boats, he would cut stripes from scraped out ones to repair the ones with less damage. Then heat weld. Just like welding with gas torch and rods method wise.

Oatey makes an ABS to PVC transition solvent cement. That may work for you.

I’m a bit late to the party, but I’ve done a similar box before but without the plastic welding gun… not fun! But for that oval piece, I used a good quality engine sealant, specifically the Victor Reinz high temp gasket sealant. It’s meant for engines so withstands the head but does a great job of sticking to different surfaces as well. Another great video, Nate!

If you're in a pinch, sika flex will seal anything. I've seen it used in the industry to seal/bond ambulance and RV panels, retread shoes and airplane tires (not recommended). It allows some flex for temperature changes.

@@DirtLifestyle it did! I didn't have the special tools but I had a Weller soldering iron and some tig filler wire that I used to "staple" the pieces together while I melted and plastic epoxied the pieces back together. Great idea. Thank you!

Hey Nate super glue bonds to abs and most polypropylene compounds. Simply let it draw in the joint via capillary action. Obviously check it to make sure you don't have mystery plastic LOL.

I used Harbor Freight cheaper plastic weld kit and I bought extra rods and repaired the grill shell on my 2013 F-350. I got some little waves and the other reinforcements had cracked and I used J B Weld with metal to glue them and to add reinforcements in the gaps. It’s holding so far. And I figured it saved me $700.00 in parts and paint work.

You can use acetone to weld abs together and for testing if something is abs, You should definitely look into 3d printing, That poly part would be super easy to model and print in abs with the right printer.

Panel bond will stick if you rough up the plastic. It won't be a bond like the glue, but it will seal up the joint and not fall off as easily.

Some heat-set treaded inserts would be a really clean way to thread the lid fasteners into that box. You may already know but just wanted to throw it out there just incase

Model glue works on polystyrene. It'll mix with the ABS glue.

@@DirtLifestyle I've also used a length of plastic coat hanger, chucked into a high speeddd drill, to bond dissimilar plastics together. It works a lot like a stick welder.

Awesome video! You don’t hear much about plastic fabrication from offroad channels, and this was really interesting to learn about. 3D printing might be another worthwhile option for this type of project.

another great product is celluar pvc you can buy in 1/4" 3/8" 1/2" 3/4" 1" it comes in sheets 4'X8' 4'X10' when i worked in construction we used it a lot to make outside trim went to a show they built a whole house with it. you can glue with regular pvc glue or epoxy you can heat and bend drill and tap wonderful product i used it for my wrecker body mounts make donuts it has some give not much you should check it out. it also comes in board sizes just like regular wood comes in

I haven't had the need to bond HDPE for over 12+ years doing underground utility work we mainly did fusion welding. Back then there was an expensive two part epoxy called Bonduit. Just Googled and it is still made and still expensive. However turns out technology has advanced and it looks like there are many less expensive epoxies to choose from now including J B Weld that seem to be rated for HDPE. I'm sure they all have their own instructions, but I remember having to scuff and clean with acetone prior to application. I'm sure you can find a reasonable product to suit your needs here. Why get a custom panel filter? Find a panel filter that you like and that is available by the gross (meaning that it is used by a lot of other vehicles, so it'll be around for a while), and build your box to fit that filter. Then you can buy a filter just about anywhere and not worry if it's in stock.

Since you used diferent polymers you can only use a "universal" glue to make it stick together. The best way is to use a premium superglue and than cover it all using silicone for high temperatures. I cant recomend any brand since I'm from Portugal and I don't know the brands that you can find in your country.

Yeah it’s crazy right now, I help my dad run his exterior pest control, mosquito abatement and lawn fertilization business, and we are putting together a second work truck to spread out the work load. I am doing the fabrication which is saving us a good chunk of change but the material cost so far is insane! We are using stainless because our fertilizer is really harsh on mild steel, and so far We have spent $1,300 on 20 feet of 1/8 inch wall 2x4 rectangular pieces. I am just hoping it will cost less than $2,000 for the metal alone!

I had a plastic interior panel break and I wasnt sure what kind of plastic it was so I got the permatex 2 part plastic weld epoxy. Says it works on all plastics. Might be worth a look see! But yours looks good! 🍻
