Plastics Affect People: Plastic and Health 

Every step of the plastic life cycle can be a threat to our health. But why is plastic harmful, and what should be done about it?
Communities are exposed to pollutants during oil extraction, workers inhale toxic off-gases during the plastic manufacturing process, and consumers eat, inhale, and absorb plastic toxins every day.
☠️ Many of the largest and most hazardous chemical families, including heavy metals, flame retardants, phthalates, bisphenols, and endocrine disruptors, are directly associated with plastic production.
Some of these chemicals have been linked to illnesses such as:
- Breast cancer
- Endometriosis
- Ovarian cancer
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Behavioural disorders
- Miscarriage
- Reproductive disorders

The Plastic Project is a people-focused video series created in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), Environmental Defence and Breast Cancer Action Quebec. The project is a series that illustrates three key components of the plastic pollution crises:
1) The "Lifecycle" of Plastic: Cradle to Grave;
2) Plastic and Human Health; and
3) Plastic and Climate Change.
The aim of this project is to bring to light the many ways in which plastic - from the extraction of oil in unceded territories to the exportation of plastic waste to the global south - negatively impacts the health of our environment, our bodies and the climate.
