This will was powered by a rope drive. It took a true splicing artist to keep this mill running.

Really neat place, wish the Ford Museum had acquired it when we closed it in 1995

I believe this looks like the mill where I worked in the summer of 1957. I was a laborer and got good pay that paid for a lot of college in those days. I believe this is what we called the 96" mill in Indiana Harbor, IN. I lived in Griffith in those days. Fantastic video. Thanks for including it.

Great to see this mill. I drove a 3 high 5,000hp Lowery mill in the 1960's rolling titanium but of course we did not have all the safety equipment (open pulpit and pegs instead of guides)!

A section of the north wall and west entrance of the old 100" building still stand to this day in 2021 right next to sheet metal and fab shops there in plant one. Thanks for sharing this sad day of a great place that once was. It will now live on forever in the cyberworld. I have heard stories about the place from time to time when I run into one of the old guys who worked there who still work elsewhere in the mill believe it or not. We still have a few guys 50+ years senority.

I worked there the summer of 1969 I think the forman of the laborers was Chris Lonroth. I can remember comming in and the boss telling us the mill was down so we had to put on the boots and liners and clean the grease pit. I also worked I think it was called #5 shear pushing the heavy plates into the shear on the rollers for an old shearman named Howard. I can still hear the noise it made when they through the salt on the slap as it entered the mill and watch the guys turn the slab around.
