Platinum is in Modern Hard Drive Platters

Platinum recovery from Hard Drive Platters has been knocked on the head for quite some time but unlike most new technology, Hard drives have actually turned around and modern platters do contain Platinum along with a multitude of metals.
Check out my recommended safety products, Furnaces & stuff on amazon.. www.amazon.com/shop/ewasteben
So no matter what you read online about platters, all the tests to date from refiners have been with older H/D's.
My estimate is H/D's from 2008 above or to be safe, 240 GB H/D's should all contain new style platinum platters and ALL Laptop Platters, which are glass contain Platinum as the test results suggest.

Also... my scrap yard take those hard drive casing as extruded aluminum because, even though it is technically cast aluminum, they are of high grade aluminum and therefore allows me to include them with my extruded.

Lot's of people are scrapping hard drives but I suggest keeping modern H/D Platters aside for eventual Platinum recovery. Whilst we generally sell modern hard drives, in future, when we see lot's of 240gb+ drives going to scrap it may well be worth it. Keep Scrapping & Have Fun!

It's a really good question !!!! I Personally know I.T. FROM a Major Scrapyard !!!! And he taught me how to fix the internals of my computers back in the 1990s. He has never told me this, and, I will ask him.

OK, "people" are saying it will take 10+ modern platters to get a gram of contaminated Platinum ? AND it's very difficult !!!! And probably dangerous. "Just take the money and run" , right , hahahaha. Toss em in with the Aluminum ? OR use them ? I see one person says make "bird scare decorations" for the garden ? I Like this idea because I grow many edible plants I have quite the greenthumb. EXCEPT those glass ones !!!!!! Scrap those darn things OF COURSE.

I look at it from a stacking standpoint. I'm already scrapping a hard drive, sell magnets, alum, sneak hardware into my #1 etc. It costs me nothing financially and very little space to stack platters until a backyard solution to recovery comes along. Minute traces of anything become significant when you are working with hundreds or thousands of units. Same reason I stack chips, mlcc, tc, compressor switches etc., eventually you end up with something. Love ya ben, keep up the good work, your videos have helped me immensely. Be well.

Thanks Dave, This is exactly the whole idea, stockpile until we can recover the precious metals, it's only a matter of time we have backyard techniques to match high end refiners and get what they get.

Graet video Ben.I'm in one of my experiments, In my video I managed to recover a part of Platinum, although my procedure is not financially effective, the amount of Platinum I received was not worth losing Aluminum, but there are other methods that can save Aluminum and the Platinum at the same time. This is the procedure that one of my Subskryber left in a comment on my video: My method. Cut a grove in one edge of the platters to let the molten aluminum out and Rack the platters on a steel rack that looks like a swing set "A" frame above a graphite mold by about an 1". To catch the molten aluminum in a mold inside my Kiln that goes to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. When the foils that are left are cold. I drop them in a bucket and cover them with Sodium Hypocholorite or bleach to get the rest of the aluminum out. Then wash with baking soda, dry and cut up and drop in a Whistler coffee pot and cover with Aqua Regia and slow boil till the chromium and PGM's dissolve. Then denature and drop. The aluminum recovery helps pay the electricity used and Solar with a Power wall helps too. My research indicated .005% Platinum per platter? Palladium can be used it wont magnetize. T.L Jenks is name this subskryber.Type a name on RU-vid, him profile will be first on list!!!,

You will find Platinum in perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) disks. First introduced in 2005. There is not much, but the more data a disc can hold the more platinum it has in it.

Reader arms - some of them are made of magnesium as some laser untits in CD/DVD river are too. but I dunno in which models. As for HDDs I think that its very likely to find magnesium arms when the magnets are pretty small. So if ur in fireworks, just check them out!

It's not a calculation that I would know how to do myself, but surely with the data in that diagram, it could be possible to work out an average price per average platter in terms of precious metals. The atomic weight/size of the metal in question, multiplied by the total depth of the containing fraction, multiplied by the percentage of those metals in that fraction? Or something along those lines? Could help kickstart a HDD platter scrap price rise! What other purposes have people sold them for? I've sold for laser cutting art installations, I gather people can use them for scaring away animals from gardens and other artistic installations, any other audiences to target?

Based on the spectroscopic thickness profile I did some calculations and the outcome was that 1 3.5" platter holds roughly 1 milligram of Platinum. In other words you need to process 1000 platters to get 1 gramm of Platinum (losses through process yield

I haven't encountered a more thorough researcher who is a scrapper, anywhere. Benny, you have excelled yourself!! You might want to contact the platinum producers association in the USA to see if they have figures on how much platinum is sold into the hard-disk industry. They'll have figures but may or may not make them available to you. Can I get a copy of that chart somewhere or from you, please?

Thanks Ben, much appreciated. Interesting video too. I found this which might interest you: ipa-news.com It is the International Platinum Association. Doubtless, someone will know how much platinum exactly goes onto a hard disk. It might be a long trail to find it, but with how many milligrams (or whatever) it will be then be easy to make calculations for what a modern disk platter is worth. Also, the reason for the use of platinum may be the increasing bit densities per sq. mm, it is massive now. Most research is being done by IBM and they sell the patents they derive from that research into the hard disk industry. There's papers available on the hard disk industry too, but some are very expensive, up to US$10,000 for a 40 page paper, but older documents are often free.

Features of Platinum Element Slow expansion if exposed to heating. Slow melting in the water of fire We can distinguish between them through a test called zero test, which is a piece of white gold and scratched, if scratched easily is white gold, and the second method is to heat a piece of metal and let it cool until it turns to a dark color is white gold, It is a piece of platinum

These layers are applied via ion deposition. This can deposit material only a couple atoms thick. No process used by a hobby scrapper will ever be viable. Now if you had thousands of platters and had access to a furnace where you could fractional melt, there may be a small profit.

With better hard drives, you can make more money selling them intact. I NEED some of the ones that you are smashing up to refurbish older computers. I need some of those to turn my old junk into functional units that I can pass on to people that can't afford to put out $900 for a working system.
