This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Plato's work, The Republic and specifically on his discussion in the end of book 6 about the likeness or analogy between the Form of the Good and the Sun, which he calls the "offspring" of the Good. Both the Good and the Sun make it possible for the human being to apprehend matters, in the case of the Sun, for vision to apprehend visible objects, in the case of the Good, for the soul to recognize and know the Forms.

"It is an incredibly beautiful thing you are talking about, if it provides both knowledge and truth but is itself superior to them in beauty". Amazing class, Professor Sadler. Thank you.

Yes, if it exists, the form of the good is something pretty amazing

On an totally unrelated topic did you see the APA criticism of stoicism in their new paper on guidelines for men and boys?

Does Plato believe the form of the good is truly knowable/intelligible by us? If not, to what extent can we apprehend it? Socrates states several times he doubts he will ever truly ascertain the form of justice, truth, etc. What allows us to understand to some extent, and how do we know when we've gained some understanding of the form itself?

So according to Plato was it that The Good = The God? Was that his religious belief?

Why did Plato call this most important form, the Form of the Good? Why the word 'Good' specifically? It could've been called the Form of Truth or the Ultimate Form, or something else. I think you eluded to it near the end when you quoted Plato by saying knowledge and truth is beautiful and wonderful. So I am guessing Plato views being able to understand and knowledge of being as a positive attribute, hence the Good. Of course another question is what if knowing the truth is a negative thing for humanity but that's a separate question.

I mean if you read the Republic attentively, I think you’ll figure this out. It’s also the form of the Beautiful or beauty itself in the Symposium

In other words, the answer to your question is so obvious that I could have easily told you the answer. But, no....I won't tell you. I'll just suggest you aren't seeing what's obvious. Great teacher.
