@Cruxity they can accept pretty large variety and definitely can also be in cooler water. In cooler water they will not thrive as much, they will grow and breed a little slower, but on the other hand they will have longer life-span :) But definitely depends on what you mean by "cold-water" :) by cooler water I mean around 22-23 °C (71-73)....
I have two red balloon plaites, mother and daughter . They are identical , I can tell them a part only cause the mother chases away the daughter at feeding time as she’s the dominant between the two .
Is it possible to keep 8-10 platies in a 15 gallon tall tank as long as there are no other fish or is the tank too small? Sources online say various things and im not sure who to trust.
@Biology Believers hello, luckily I have not come across this problem in my aquariums yet, so unfortunately can't tell you how to tackle this problem :( I have an idea in my head how I would treat it, but as I have not tried it yet, don't want to share something that I have not tested in my tanks :)
Ive bought a female balloon Platy one week ago , I was hoping she wasn’t pregnant ( but I knew it was nearly sure she was as she was placed with males too in the fish store tank ) , anyway today she has given birth . Considering I have no male liveberers in my tank , how long is gonna last sperm storage ? She will give birth again next month right , even if she’s without male . I just wish she was a virgin , lol, the baby fry stuff is something I am not too much into it anymore . Anyway I’ll keep a daughter ( that will be separated immediately from the brothers as soon as the anal fin start developing in gonopodium ) , and I’ll take the rest of the brood to the fish store .
Well, yea she can store sperm for several drops unfortunately... If you'll leave fry there with her, she may eat some of them, if you don't really want them, this is a great first step as only several of them will survive, and them eaten will serve as great diet supplement for her :D (always better than getting rid of them some other way)... I usually grow up fry till like 2 months, and the lower quality fry I always sell as feeders :) that may be the way as well if you want to get rid of them later... :)
Pat's Fish Tanks she gave birth in the main tank so I found only 6 of them , and I saved them putting them in a big tank all for them . I will wouldn’t toss them ,I feel sorry for them , I will probably give them back to my fishstore where they grow the baby fry that born in their shop in a big tank all for them . I wanna keep a daughter though so will have to keep them till I am sure at least one is female . What age do the gonopodium start developing in male fry ?
Salvo Smith Or just grow them up a bit, around 6 weeks shoul be enough so other fish won’t be able to eat the and put them back into main tank 😊 from what I’ve seen, there is plenty of room for 6 more fish 😊👌🏻 that is also an option 😊
@Sean Hart usually some will survive if you have heavily planted aquarium with places to hide. When I left fry in the tank, usually 2-3 out of 30 survived :)
Sean Hart Definitely 😊 or if you have heavily planted aquarium, monitor her, and when you’ll see fry in tank, net them all out and place them in different one, or some net larger breeding box inside that tank if you don’t have another one for them to grow up 😊 That way you should be able to save majority of them as well...
I have a swordtail & platty fish, the male always chasing female for quite sometime, but the female always doesn't give permission to breed. Poor male platty 😄
Roselia Haha well, I am sure she does at some point maybe or rather most likely she already did, its just with livebeareres males are tying to breed all the time and the process literally takes few seconds 😅 Another thing is that platy can breed with swordtail so you most likely will have some hybrid fry soon 😊👌🏻
Finally got my channel started, now for my first vid. "Houston we have a problem" I have an ich outbreak and platy have dropped fry in the same tank. What can I do?? Any help would be appreciated
Aquaholics Aquatics Hey mate... no worries. Step 1 - add 1 table spoon of aquarium salt per 10 liters of water. Step 2 - add heater and heat your water up slowly to 30-32 degrees celsius. Step 3 - add airstone to provide extra oxygen as with increasing temperature the oxygen is decreasing. Ich cannot reproduce in temperatures over 28 degrees. In combination with salt in a week time you have no more problem 😊👌🏻
@@undersurfacechannel so update I'm done to 1 make mickey mouse, 1 female guppy( may be pregnant) and about a dozen fry I saved from the tank. A couple guppy fry and a couple platy fry. One fry has to spots of If I from the original tank but the rest look fine. Raised the temp, added salt not sure what I did wrong but now I've had to start over. Cycled a 20 gal display tank for the guppy and platy to be permanently. The fry tank is also cycled. I cleaned the ich tank out completely and started over. High ammonia 5ppm, 1ppm nitrite and roughly 3ppm. I just started it with old shrimp. Been in the tank about 2 days so I removed it to let the ammonia do its cycling. I will probably make it my Quarantine tank since the ich-x stained the silicone in my tank. The two survivors are in a tank. They spend a lot of time swimming at the top of the tank or the bubbles if I turn them on. I don't understand😞 temp is 78 and the tank water is fresh. They do eat when I feed them. Before they were sick they were swimming thru the whole tank and not at the top.
@@aquaholicsaquatics7523 Yea that sounds really strange. My guess would be that it was much more serious than just a regular ich... but not sure mate, for me salt and increased temperature with an airstone always worked... :/
I have four females and one male, but the male only seems to be interested/harassing one female. He absolutely will not leave her alone. This has gone on for many days. Is this normal?
@lakemiya6 sometimes it happens, males are trying to breed all the time, but usually they are attracted to majority or all females. In case it would get too far and you'd seen any damage on the female, try removing her to holding tank for few days and see whether he'll try breeding with other females, and if yea, return her back and maybe it'll fix the issue :)
Hello! I have a question :) I recently bought 3 platy fish (I have never had platies before and am not intending to breed. I told the girl at the pet store to get me all females, but she didnt.) I have one male red wag platy. I don't know my other two platies genders but they are a sunburst wag platy and a gold twinbar platy. I often see my red male chasing my gold twinbar platy around the tank. Does this mean my gold twinbar is a female and my red male is trying to mate with her? Also my gold twinbar is a little smaller than both my wag tail platies but I thought females were larger than males? Thank you so much :)
stream CMB Hi, well to determine the gender for sure just look at the shape of their anal fin (1:10min in this video), those that have them shaped as triangle are females, and those that have gonopodiums are males 😊 that is definitely the best way to determine a gender as if you have them from a Pet store, they may be different age, and therefore size comparison may not be completely accurate 😊 But yes, in general females are larger...
stream CMB and back to the breeding part, well if you have males and females together they will breed and there is no way around it 😅 females can also store the sperm in their bodies for couple of moths and even for several separate drops without being hit again 😊 so even buying only females from the fish store, there is a high chance that they have been hit in the fish store and in couple of weeks you’ll have some fry 😊 but to be honest I would not worry about them having fry at all... If you don’t have super heavily planted aquarium, the parents will hunt the babies down and eat them, sometimes in aquariums with tons of swimming space even all of them... So they will breed, no way around it, but if you don’t want to keep fry, it will only provide healthy snack for parents 😂 hope I’ve answered your question and it helped a bit 😊
@@undersurfacechannel thank you! Maybe I will buy a few more plants, just in case she has babies. I know they will probably eat most of the fry, but it's just so sad 😅
@@streamcmb8512 yea well, thats nature :D again, depends on what you want, if you want to keep some and have several babies, buy breeding box instead, and if there will be a drop, just collect the babies with net, place them in the breeding box and feed them for a month... than you can just release them back, and they will be big enough so the parents won't be able to eat them :) its a great feeling growing up your own fish, and if you would not want so many fish, you can always just give them to somebody else, or back to you fish store :)
I don’t understand how the babies stay in the clear breeding box my babies all slipped thru the holes they have in there and I own red tail variartus my female also doesn’t produce as much babies she could be old but the only male I have won’t touch the other female I’ve had the babies for two months now out of her first 6 only three have survived her second batch seems to be defiantly more than 6 but I’ll leave them in the tank with the parents
D. prest Yea it happens all the time. And especially in guppies. But also in platies, recently I have seen footage of platies with such a large dorsal and tail fins, that it was just lying at the bottom of the tank struggling to even swim... Check “Platy work Championships” you’ll see some cool fish over there 😊👌🏻
There are many possible signs... First of all activity, it may start swimming slower, lying on the ground etc. and that is usually connected to clamped fins. It will have fins clamped to the body and you will see that something is wrong. Long white sticky poop is usually sing of internal parasites, and white spots is on the fins and body is Ich. Majority of these problems you can fix with medicated flakes, or aquarium salt :) Hope it helps...
Hey Mario, I would definitely not recommend that. The best would be 1 male and 2 females, or if you already have 1 female and 2 males, would be good idea to buy at least 2 more females, so you would have 3 females and 2 males :)
@Vuex San they will try to breed all the time with everything that is moving :D that is the reason why you should always have at least 1:2 (male to female) ratio of livebearers in tank :)
@Karambit R sorry for your loss. That is really interesting, may have been some sudden change in water parameters or something if both female and fry died week after giving birth. Would need to hear more about that case... Anyway, sorry for your loss and I hope you'll get some new stock soon! :)
Pat's Fish Tanks I don’t use a filter and other things just use some huge rocks, two fake plants and some tiny rocks also I noticed my male now is trying escape it basically gets close to the walls and starts going up and down. my aquarium is quite small it’s not a normal aquarium. My dad and his friends made it,it’s made of two things steel and glass.it is then stuck with silicon. Now I was gonna by another stock and some more food and a filter more rocks and fake plants and upgrade the aquarium but because I was unlucky I got everything right before the first case happened in my place and then the cases went 234 or something and then pretty much a lot of shops closed and the aquarium was one of them. Also I noticed that the female's body was fresh not even eaten everything was on. But the fries well they looked like they were eaten. Any recommendations of different fishes which can cross or get along with my platy?
I you want them to breed, get that male at least 2-3 females. You will recognize when the female is pregnant. Her belly will be much more rounded and bigger, and before giving birth, usually female becomes much less active and will start hiding and looking for a quiet place to give birth :) hope it helps a bit.. if you've got more questions, just let me know ;)
