nathan carpenter to my knowledge, no. however, me being a bassoonist, I recommend you try playing his bassoon sonata in f minor transcribed for tuba (idk if there would be any conflicts in terms of register etc but yeah)

Singing the canon (a couple octaves lower) was great fun, and gave me an idea of what to expect. As soon as I picked up the recorder, though, my hands said "yeah, how about 'no'? perhaps sir would like to try 'Frère Jacques' again?" So, while I am happy that I can sing well enough to keep up (mostly) ... I am resigned to a lot more practice before my hands join the fun.

+Kurtis Kroon Singing it is a great idea though! Being able to sing the part (thus knowing the rhythm, melodic line, phrasing etc) is a fantastic way of practising :)

Jazz methods have what they call a 'Minus One' teaching/practice aid. People who don't have access to accompanists or duet partners would appreciate this, if they're not out already. This from a person in Bangalore, India, where the recorder hasn't gained the popularity it enjoys in the far east. Thanks! Harry

Thanks for this video, Sarah. I think this is a great idea. It will take bit of practice before I'm able to play along (perhaps a touch fast for me, but I may try slowing the video down) but I'm going to give it a go! Thanks also for introducing me to these wonderful sonatas. Hours of enjoyable practice await! A huge thank you for producing these videos. You obviously put a lot of time and effort into them. For a recorder enthusiast they are endlessly fascinating. I hope they are raising your profile, as well as that of the recorder.

This is a seriously good contribution to online music making. I was a pro clarinettist in a great orchestra. Now I teach classroom music. The sort of stuff you do is wonderful for joining the dots between teaching and playing. You offer a great deal of insight and enthusiasm but you also offer opportunity to just get your hands dirty. I wish you good luck online, you are exactly in the Goldilocks zone. Bad news is that I just shared this with my daughter - who is a keen young dancer - but who was also a fine flute player in her early years (grade 8 at 13). She just said that recorder is Btec flute!!! She's only winding me up, as I have a great respect for quality recorder music. I did some work with Franz Bruggen when he tried his hand at conducting (as I also did with ex singer Fischer Diskau) and the respect I held them in for their playing was enough for me to listen to their interpretations of orchestral music. I believe the stuff on youtube (your channel for example) is exceptionally generous in sharing experience and insight that will inform the next generation. Thanks, and good luck.

Hello Sarah .. I do not know if you will read this as is 22.8.17 this evening .. but how lovely that was & what a happy accident for me .. oh how they smirked & sniggered in the guitar shop .. " what are you going to do with that ? " smirks etc .. but I had a plan in mind & to my delight it has worked out to be much more than I had hoped .. so many guitarists play the same old blues pentatonic licks & they think they are a phryigyian genius if they use another mode .. lol . I have often tried to imitate birdsong & other instruments to avoid that same old same old .. & wonder of wonders .. here is the answer play like the above .. ps One of my biggest influences musically is ( sadly missed ) Stephane Grappelli .. Having only just discovered this kind of stuff .. I feel like a child at Christmas .. thank you from the old dude in the Woods ..

Wonderful! I was playing some Finger recorder duets with my "singing pupil" after we had done some work preparing for an Evensong with a small choir in my church. We usually finish our session with some recorder playing. Sadly we are not really up to Telemann yet (Although it is OK if I am playing the organ or piano as a continuo player) He mentioned the Telemann Canonic Sonatas but the first glance at IMSLP came up with them at the original pitch which is too low for recorders (unless Tenor recorders!) I then spotted your smiling face on a RU-vid ink and you have provided (with your infectious happy attitude ) the answer by linking in a suitably transposed edition. I printed it off immediately. - Thanks again. I have tried playing along but need to improve my fluency!

I was wondering how you are fingering the trill on E natural as in say bar 27 of the Allegro? I did watch your piece on trills but didn't find that one. Anyone who prefers C-fingering can find the score in its original key of G here: www.flutetunes.com/tunes.php?id=701 The flutetunes website is well worth exploring. As well as lots of PDFs/MIDIs/MP3s in C-friendly keys, it has a superb tuner and metronome, and interesting articles like "How to Practice Sight-reading". Note: MIDIs and MP3s can be slowed down (by 1/10s) in Windows Media Player by "rt-click/Enhancements/Play speed settings". It only works in "Now playing" mode, not "Library" mode.

It would be neat if you could post a link to an audio file of the part where you play the piece; I'm considering recording myself playing along, and it would sound much better for your half to be your original audio rather than your audio as rendered by my computer's speakers and re-recorded by my microphone. Perhaps there's a way for users to download a RU-vid video and extract the audio from it, but if there is, it seems not entirely straightforward.

Hi there Ms. Jeffrey, what about the other set of six sonatas for two altos? Maybe your team could assist in this viz., record the parts separately (audio/video) in stereo part I L channel, part II R channel so players can tackle both the parts against the ones recorded by you. Harry

Great idea. Not ready for this yet but will certainly use it to study the piece. Thank you. Sarah if at all possible could you demonstrate the underside of your right hand position. I want to see how much your right hand thumb knuckle is bent or not. I'm finding I need to position my thumb between the 4th and 5th hole at quite an acute angle in order to hit all the holes easily but this is causing strain. I've looked at your video re hand position and have Van Hawe's book but still failing.

Just curious...anyone know why this IMSLP score is in Bb rather than C? I can understand why a purely alto recorder player who doesn't know "normal" fingering (i.e. soprano/tenor C fingering) should decide to transpose it from it's original key of G (it was written for two flutes), ...but into Bb?? To keep the same fingering it would need to be in C, then if the alto player later wanted to play the piece with other instruments (in its original key), s/he could simply pick up a C-recorder and read the alto transcription. It can't be done when the score is in Bb!
@Team_Recorder
@Team_Recorder 7 лет назад
Aha, this is a good question! (cracks knuckles) You would be entirely correct - if the original piece were written for flutes in C, that is. Actually the recorder it was originally written for was the voiceflute - a tenor in D. This was the same pitch as the traverso - the baroque flute, that also had D as its lowest pitch. So to get from a voiceflute in D to an alto in F, you put it up a minor 3rd - hence from G to Bb. (recorder hack - you can read voiceflute fingering by pretendng you're reading bass clef and adding 3 flats :) Hope this helps!
@tomm54321
@tomm54321 7 лет назад
Ah, very illuminating answer, Sarah! I hadn't realised that back in the 18th century the standard tenor recorder was a 'voice flute' in D, a tone higher than the modern one in C, so any transcription for the F-alto player would have been a tone lower than I had thought (hence Bb, not C) in order to maintain the original key on voice flute. So, let me see, I could either buy a voice flute and use it to play the Bb score with alto fingering, OR I could just read the original score in G on my tenor using normal C-fingering. Hmm, thats a hard one...(not!) Just to correct something you said: according to the flutetunes website (see my previous post) the music, published in 1723, was originally entitled "Six Canons or Sonatas for two German Flutes or two Violins, Compos'd by Georg Philip Telemann". The 'German flute' was apparently another name for the transverse flute, so that is the flute it was written for, not the voice flute. Also, yes, they both had the same low note of D, but it required 6-fingers-down on the transverse flute, not 7 as on the voice flute. That's because on the transverse flute the whole length of the instrument sounded the bottom note of D, with the rh little finger key opening a hole to produce a D#! As for your 'voiceflute fingering' hack, I'm just not going there, my brain can't cope with that!

Hey! I have a question. Following the score, seems like you're playing in another key. The first two notes on score are F and Bb. But seems like you're playing C and F. Are you transposing? So, WHY do this and HOW can I do this?

Piraja - Sarah is playing an alto recorder, not a soprano or tenor. So that’s how you finger F and B flat on an alto.

Great music, maybe a bit to difficult for where I am at the moment. Really liked the looks and sound of the recorder, could you please tell me which make and/or model it is? Maybe in a future video you could review some recorder makes pros and cons ? Thank you for doing all those very informative videos.

why do u have to transpose it from G to Bb and why the Bb???? How???
@Team_Recorder
@Team_Recorder 7 лет назад
The original in G goes down to a D, which is too low to play on alto. A lot of editions transpose it to Bb so you can play it on alto. Those Bbs and Ebs are very good for the finger technique ;)

It shows it with a 'dal segno' symbol - - instead of numbers! Thanks for pointing this out!

(the 'dal segno' symbol is like a curly S with a line through and two dots - but you can google it too :)

How can I play the recordor without losing the sound each minute because of my saliva?
@Team_Recorder
@Team_Recorder 7 лет назад
Make sure you don't eat sticky, milky or sugary food beforehand (drink water and brush your teeth), swallow excess slaiva before playing, warm the recorder under your arm to discourage condensation, and clean the inside of the instrument :)

When I grow up Sarah, I wish to be a professional Recorder Player like you Sarah but I'm not good playing it and I need more practice and their are no other or great Recorder Players at my school and I'm just eleven (11).
