Wasn't the original in Open E? I'm pretty sure it was, Keith Richards just transposed it to Open G because he liked it so much.

The note in the riff wouldn’t be an A on the G string, it’d be a D#. Chorus is D A E B. That’s how Keith played it in Open G, if you want to play it like Keith note for note.
