Learn how to play in the amazing pick-funk style of Bobby Vega - Watch in 1080p!
Sound Examples:
2:35 - The 'Steamtrain' rudiment
3:58 - Playing C dorian in an 'open position'
4:37 - G octave practice groove
5:29 - G Dorian full groove
Bobby is a hugely inspirational player and studio session legend. Not only does he excel at all bass techniques, he is also responsible for developing this unique pick-funk style as far back as the early seventies. He's performed with an awesome array of artists including Sly and the family stone, Tower of power to name a few.
This guide covers the fundamentals of the technique and should set you up to start building your chops. Mastering this technique will massively improve your sense of time, groove and feel. It's also incredibly enjoyable and rewarding once you've put the time in.
Anyone who knows me, knows how much I admire Bobby and his fearsome technique. Great guy! Check out Bobby's site here www.bobbyvega.com

Great video! It reminds me of slapping, not in the sound, but rather rhythm. The origins of slap were because Larry Graham while playing with his mom, needed to fill in for the role of the drummer. Also, keeping a solid 1/8th or 1/16th note pattern (with played notes and ghost notes) makes it easier to stay in time.

Hey man great video! Love bobby’s technique. One quick thing though that im sure you already know but C dorian has two flats and not two sharps because it is from the key of b flat.
@Inthepockett
@Inthepockett 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching! I've found most students take in sharps easier than flats, unless directly learning about key sigs. Weird but there you go.

Instructions flash a bit too quick for me to get! Would be good to have them stay on screen a bit longer. Great technique, though. And I love that you don't beat around the bush, like most RU-vid tutorials!!

Questions: It looks like you're doing different things, when you're playing fast and slow. 2:39 and 2:50 are different right? When you're muting, it looks like you're hitting the pick instead of picking normally. Is that true? - to create that punchy sound maybe...

Hey there! Great video! Thanks for sharing! For some reason I have the impression that on my device audio and video aren't really in sync. So to make things clear: on the downbeat you're doing actually an upstroke right?
@paulevans4334

An example of Bobby doing this would help.

Great video. One thing I can’t work out that keeps changing in my head... the first 16th note of the two beat rudiment is always the percussive strike? Or is it the last 16th note of the two beat rudiment which is percussive bringing it back to a solid down stroke note on the first 16th of the first beat? And if you understand that then you deserve a medal.
@mrdjr6544

Since posing this question I have been unable to see this rudiment in any other video than this.

hiya - thanks for the video - is it my imagination or the basic rudiment you 1st play slow, sounds a different rythym when you speed it up ?

is it bad that the side of my thumb keeps hitting the strings while playing with a pick ? i find it realy hard to only hit the strings with that small peace of plectrum sticking out
@feedingfiction

If you don’t want excess pick sticking out, just use a Jazz III
@Inthepockett

- Excess on the string side - it's good having the extra grip tucked into your hand. Thanks for watching!

I have some Ibanez triangle picks and i must say that i don't particularly like that shape. Standard ones seem way more comfy and for me they sound just fine.

Tom, have you tried the yellow triangles? They are stiffer and bassier than the yellow ones, with the same bite, and you get three times the pick. I love your band Slayer :)

2.33 where you teach us the rhythm in slow speed, then when you double up the speed, I don't think your playing the same rhythm. slow is 1g 1b 2g 2b repeats , fast 2g 2b, 2g 2b, repeat. At least that is what is seems to me. Cause when I almost get to the speed you're playing with the notes your showing at slow speed, the rythm is not even close... or there is something I am not understanding.
