It was 1973. I was 13. I was convinced that suicide was the only path left to me. I heard a record of Neil. His music, with all of the instrumentals and profound lyrics locked me into a survival mode. Morningside, canta lebre,, the boat that I row, play me, suzanne, Years passed. I bought a guitar. Met a girl. She asked for a love song. I played Play Me. She later accepted my proposal. We have 2 children, gobs of grandchildren. Thank you Neil!
The unrivaled power of music to reach down into the depths of the human soul is, and always will be one of the most beautiful mysteries of life. Neil Diamond is one of the great ambassadors of this wonderful gift from God. Thank you for that touching story!
Sunday drives out to the country for dinner. My dad driving. My mom in the front seat. This on the 8 track. Every time I hear this I am back in that back seat, feeling safe, feeling loved, feeling at home. I’m 60 but I’m that little kid always.
I was born in 1960 Found Neil Diamond’s music when I was 13 and it’s been a great journey together. I’m 64 and still tear up with the songs. Thank you Mr. Diamond. ‘ play me’ is my most favorite but hell their all favorites.
My father loved Neil Diamond. He became Ill with diabetes and dementia. He was suffering and I was taking care of him. I found an old VCR tape of a Neil Diamond concert and would play it for him daily. I could see his demeanor change and he would relax and feel better when I played it for him. He never got tired of it and either did I. We played some of it at his funeral.
+Anna Hayes My dad passed away about 10 yrs ago from ALS. My dad never mentioned Neil Diamond but I think of him when I hear this song. And I think of islands on Canadian lakes covered with moss and cedars. If you've been on em you know what I mean.
Neil Diamond was my father’s favorite, we listen to Neil Diamond constantly and my father knew every word to every song sadly, he passed away February 16, 2012, but this brings me back to when daddy was still here!! so many memories, but not enough.. this one’s for you, daddy
Born in 55 I was so lucky to have grown up with this music. In 69 I worked at a Texaco station I was 14 worked full-time in summer. I was paid 1.25 per hour the minimum wage at that time.

It’s sad todays music does resonate within me! His music gives me chills every time! I realize this music is from my generation but to me nothing can compare to it! The very best writer ever!
@@jameslevi1243 I get you. His music is his voice, the music is the background but it is all together His music brought me through some very tough times and now again I am in a tough time and turn to Neil
This is real music. God I miss those days. Such bittersweet memories. Thank you for being part of them, Mr. Diamond. You are, and always will be loved.
Such a spiritual down-to-earth person. There's no other person that I can recall that sings with such deepness coming to your heart ❤️ God bless you,for being you!😊🎶🎵👍🦋💗💯
My parents divorce when I was 9! I never had a relationship with my father after that but, I remember him listening to Neil Diamond when I was a kid! He passed away a couple of years ago!Today I’m 38 years old and I listen to Neil Diamond songs just so I can go back to 1989 and remember those days when me and my dad listened to his songs together!
I feel your pain. My parents divorced in 1992 and I never had a relationship with my dad after that but I did speak to him briefly before he died. I often watch the old war movies by myself and remember a time as a kid that he would make me watch them with him, so that I could translate (he was a Greek migrant with limited English). But I digress. We had a next door neighbour called Pat. Salt of the earth, she was. Her husband was openly carrying on an affair with her best friend and in her hours of grief and loneliness, she would play Neil Diamond and I could hear her crying from next door. She died of a heart attack but each time I listen to Neil, I think of Pat. Neil's songs speak to us is so many ways.
His music was a solace for me when I was young. I survived a lot of abuse, and clung to these songs. Even in writing my stories, Neil was the model for the God of Music in the fantasy stories I was writing.
I am 63..wow! Blessed to be here today..thank you jesus!❤ Neil was played by my moms friend...i was like 14yrs old..i can never play him without thinking of her..she would be 92 today if alive!❤..thank you dee dee❤
Neil Diamond was in 1977, four days on Tour in Netherland.there were problems with the Hammond organ (117 Volt America-Europe 220 Volt) I'm approached by Lou van Rees Management for a solution to my Hammond Rent. After four days I got my B3 Hammond returned with Fire spots of it frustrated me.They have me removed me from all the the Neil Diamond Fan Clubs because I had this listed on their site.Never Excuse of Neil Diamond ☹️🎹' I
I have been a fan since I was a 19 year old and I love his music to this day. I am now 68 and his music still has a profound effect on me. Neil Diamond thankyou for your beautiful lyrics and music, you make my world a better place.
My late husband loved Neil, we both loved his music! Whenever I hear him sing it brings tears to my eyes! We went to many of his Concerts! Luv u Neil! 💕 I feel when I'm listening to him, my husband in heaven is listening with me! 😀👍❤️
I have loved Neil since the late 60s ..His music has always been like a refuge to me, a spiritual experience. Greatest songwriter ever. And that voice!
Like many of his songs, this brought me to tears. I’ve seen him live about twelve times. I’ve loved him for so many years. Long after he’s gone I will still listen to him and I will still cry.
The first time I heard this song. I was 19 and My father passed two years before and I felt so alone and this song would soothe my broken nerves and ease my stress
My husband used to play Neil, lonely I have been since my prince passed away... still I wait for him to stay at the door and smile and make me laugh....
Tyrone Hunter Sorry, I found her 52 years ago! I was lucky enough to finally see Neil in concert last October in London just before he announced he was to stop touring due to ill health. The best concert ever, EVER! Thank you for the music , Neil. I wish you well for the future.
Yes, an extraordinarily beautiful song. Reminds me of the great Russian pair skaters who came to Babson before the 1980 olympics They practiced to this and other songs of Neil Diamonds album
This Neil guy fully understands, and sees through the very essence of a soul in love and in pain, truly getting it. And that's exactly what makes him a genius at lyrical writing. It's not just about rhyming, although he does have some mad rhymes, it's more about capturing that emotion most haven't figured out how to put into words. He's simply a genius.
Christopher Chambers I turned forty last month, and I know in the scope of things I'm still young, but some days I feel older than the hills. My mom is a Neil Diamond fanatic, so I was brought up right. I knew the words to most of his songs by ten years old.
It's like, when a singer/song writer first introduces their song, it must be like taking a part of their soul and exposing it to the world... Like Neil Diamond!
I cried when he played this in concert. I then cried every song until the end. I couldn’t stop. He is that amazing. This was at his last tour. I love and adore him.
I've been listening to Neil for my entire life I do not remember time when his music wasn't being played growing up in the 70's. I have passed my love of him to my own son and I believe the trend will continue for all time. IMO the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. Love Love Love
I remember when this song was released and my sister saying it was such a beautiful song. I was hooked.i saw Neil in concert and I was ecstatic. This is his best song ever.
I was watching this new tv show called Fleishman is in Trouble and they played this song while showing flashbacks of a couple's relationship. I couldn't get it out of my head, how could I have forgotten how beautiful it is.
When I was young I liked Neil Diamond, but the later years I became to fully appreciate his music and the lyrics. He is simply beautiful and I thank God that he gave us Neil. What a voice! I hope his final years are not very hurtful with his Parkinson's disease.
40 years ago I was a student in Paris and I had the chance te become aware of this music (I am from Cameroon) I lived alone in a small room (chambre de bonne) and spent much of my purse to buy albums by Neil Diamond... I have nerver forgotten that time that I felt happy even though i did not have enough money to live
Cette CHANSON est SUBLIME. MERCI à mon PAPA de me l'avoir fait découvrir lorsque j'étais encore toute petite. Elle m'a accompagnée tout au long de ma VIE.
We saw Neil on his 50th tour when he played this song it brought tears to my eyes. Best concert I have ever been too!!! What a huge talent! That made music that will forever stand the test of time.
Every time I hear a Neil Diamond song, he takes me to a happy place. When Sweet Caroline comes on it makes a person just want to get up and dance and have a great time doing it! Neil Diamond is the best!
I love this song. I love the way Neil describes himself and lover as objects of nature. "I am the moon you are sun" You're the words and I am the music Play me" His woman has moved him. I just love this song....I cry because it is so beautiful.
Absolutely love this song. It is so calming. The sweet lyrics, Neil's voice, and background music take me back to a time long ago when I was much younger. Such wonderful memories.
Would love to meet the man who helped me through every emotional state in my life with his beautiful music. If I fought with my wife you eased it, if I had a bad day at work, your music fixed it, If i just wanted to enjoy the day you made it. Love you Neil
My thoughts exactly...You wrote in just a few lines what I felt since first listening to him back in 1964 when I was 10 years old. And as a 65 year old man today. His music still inspires more today then when I was a 10 year old boy. Priceless!
I would have loved to have seen him in person also. When I was down, I put on one of his 33 1/3’s and felt better. Many a night I listened to him as I fell asleep. His lyrics are passionate, poetic, meaningful. They are ‘personal’ to so many! 🥰☺️
My grandma introduced me to neil diamond, who she actually went out with at one point in the 70’s and this song was the first song i ever heard of his and since then he is my actual hero :)
Legendary! Never forgotten!! This song always brings tears to my eyes I loved it when I was 8 and now I'm 54, I will always believe and know Neil Diamond is alive. I thank God for Neil Diamond, timeless!
Just love this music, always have. Makes me feel like getting out on the open road and travelling somewhere. I dont care what Bill Murray thinks, LOL, I'm in that portion of the crowd that loves Neil Diamond, a fan forever.
Always loved his music and saw him live twice in the 80s but never really 'listened' to his poetry. Now that I'm a year shy of 70, his words have new? meaning for me. I relive those years whenever I hear his music now. I am a troubador of sorts so have just now put many of his songs on my playlist..... how odd it has taken me so long but thanks to You Tube, here I am.
Neil Diamond was a special part of my life especially in the early 1970s! He played guitar & sang tunes that were just right in their softness, lyric beauty, & upbeat tempo. It was like audio sunshine ....... he swept loneliness away like an ocean wave clears the air. His music soothes multiple generations -- it speaks to us in some kind of wonderful universal context. Way to go, my friend! * Cav in OR *
this is one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL songs of my Life I have Ever heard... I am a true 70s gal, and I grew up listening to Greats like Neil, one of my all time FAV singer/songwriters/guitarists... he is Timeless... smiles. simpler times...
My Dad loved this song and often sang along with it back in the 70's. I was driving to work on the highway right near the cemetery he's buried at and this song came on. I just lost it. I hadn't heard it in a long time. What a great song ! Love the guitar in it.
I've loved ND for over 40 years and I never heard this song before. My boyfriend sang this to me several months ago and I listen to it every time I come on RU-vid..... LOVE IT!!!
Ahhh... this song really touches my heart. Neil Diamond has an incredible gift of talent and heart. To write and sing that really describes what we all feel and how we feel. I have loved Neil Diamond and his music since I first heard him sing back in the 80's it seems like. He is such an icon and inspiration to me and still is. I am so thankful to live in the era and to have experienced his music. He is simply one of the best! :-D
