Play Pool like the Pro's Play💪 Aiming/Cue Control - Start Balanced 💯 Stay Centered like SKY Woodward

The rule of thumb I've used to play my top level is Start Balanced and Stay Balanced - Start Centered and Stay Centered.
Of all the top players SKY Woodward does this extremely well. The Key is his footwork, he keeps his Left Foot Parallel to the Line and faces the ball naturally, like he was having a serious conversation with the Shot.
I ask him in Dallas how he learned to position his Left Foot Parallel and he said "someone told me it was better, I tried it, liked it, and kept doing it!"
It's not that easy for the rest of us, it took me 8-10 hours to make the adjustment when I changed my stance (after getting 4th in my first professional tournament in Toronto Canada).
In this video I show the secrets I've learned to accomplish the "Stay Centered and Balanced" which led me to more consistency and eventually to becoming ESPN World Open Champion and Professional Player of the Year.
Make it Yours!
The Game is the Teacher 💪
Special thanks to Chad Godfrey at the Speakeazy Billiards in Sanford NC for helping with the camera work, much appreciated 💯

CJ, Thank you. I’ve been trying to figure this out on my own. Pool books and other RU-vid videos are so wishy washy on the stance. Balanced, comfortable, and back foot in the line of the shot is what they stress but there is more to it. This way of lining up is so easy to repeat and soon as you come down on the table you’re on the line. Thanks again man.

Hi CJ, I commented on another one of your videos this morning asking about Center-to-edge alignment. But what I’ve learned from these 4 videos is that I was indeed lining up off my right hip instead of from the center of my chest! It’s weird how when you come back to something after you’ve had some experience, then it just “clicks” and makes more sense. I love TOI but I always struggled a bit with consistency. Now I understand why!! My practice session this weekend will be nothing but engraining this into my head. Thank you!! I’m also subscribing to your website.
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 7 месяцев назад
Yes if you're not centered then your perception isn't the same cutting to the left or cutting to the right - imagine shooting a pistol, basketball or throwing a dart off the right hip line instead of the Center......it will take you 2-3 weeks to make the transition but it will be worth it, your full potential will go up 20-50% as the game gets easier and easier
@ObsessedWithPool
@ObsessedWithPool 8 месяцев назад
CJ thank you for this. Even though you are teaching this based on only your own vision center (just to the right of the bridge of your nose for a right eye dominant center), as right handed but super dominant left eye, i must do a sort of ballet move with my right foot to put my right toe just to the left of the shot line and 90° to the line, stepping out wide to the left with my left foot, keeping the foot parallel with the shot line. Then, when I push out my hips as you say, and turning my head 45° to the right to align up my left eye, I come down on the shot perfectly aligned with lots of clearance for my cue and right arm, making the shot. The real trick is finding the shot line in the first place while standing up, which i sm learning to do by trusting my brain to give me the right line.
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 8 месяцев назад
You eyes just need to work together when aiming above the shot - put the butt of your cue in the center of your chest pointing out, level, from the cueball to the object ball......then you'll have a reference for your center.....center of your chest Is the center of your vision when your eyes work together.....when you get down on the shot you'll naturally position towards your "dominant" master eye.....find your center and center of balance, you'll be more consistent.
@ObsessedWithPool
@ObsessedWithPool 8 месяцев назад
@@cjwiley1541 that's my problem.. my eyes do NOT work together.. I have amblyopia (lazy eye) and my right eye is neurologically shut off most of the time; I am effectively one-eyed. So my vision "center" is down my left side and I have to contort around the cue to get lined up straight

love from China. love your accent as I lived in south of states for yrs. Quick question, have you ever experienced with pelvis pain or SI joint pain, especially from right hip/leg/low back? @cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 9 месяцев назад
The way I go down on the shot puts very little stress on my body, I can still easily play 8-10 straight hours - some of my students have neck and back issues and want to learn this technique to relieve the pain from playing several hours in leagues or tournaments - it's best to use your hips and let your head come down as a RESULT of your hips/butt pushing straight back. The cueball is the primary target so make sure you're precise with your tip targeting - however, it's vitally important to watch the object ball hit the pocket so you complete the shot and know Exactly where it finished at the pocket target - then you can move your head, but try to see it to completion without jumping up or moving your head position. That's interesting how you shoot. But I'm an advanced player. So processing what I want the cue ball to do. Is my second main concern. You will definitely be a more advanced player when you can do what I'm showing - I ran 28 racks in a row playing the Ghost in Atlanta - the table had a name because of the 4 inch pockets and Deep shelf....JAWS! 🦈 The reason my consistency was so high was due to my Alignment which is the key to Aiming ....it takes about 3-8 hours of work to learn this technique but we'll worth it - I'm almost embarrassed to state how much it's generated in my life The Game is the Teacher

Interesting. I like it. It seems many modern players like Fedor step forward into the stance like they teach for snooker. I learned in the 70's and everyone said to step back into the line so that's how I do it. I think Filipinos kind of do what you show here. I just looked at Alex and that's how he does it. Efren is similar but after his foot goes to the left he does another little shuffle where he moves his right foot slightly to the right.

That's smart! Another thing is to stand as much as possible with your left foot 3-5 inches in FRONT of your right toe while you're centering - even exaggerate it and practice stepping Behind your left foot with your right so you can keep the left foot in Front.....I am in this position the entire time I play pool, so is a lot of other champion players.....it makes the game much easier and your consistency will rise so your entire game benefits.

Hey CJ! Another great video. My question is this..when you line up which ball do you focus on first? Cue ball or object ball. ?

Good information, thanks Which is your dominant eye

I'm Right Eye Dominant but it was nothing I had to think about - I just make sure I'm centered, I use the center of my chest as a reference.

So on a cut shot are you aligning your left foot parallel to the shot line or parallel to the center-to-center/center-to-edge line?
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 18 дней назад
Always to the Center to Center or Center to Edge Alignment - then Triangulate the angle from there, you'll be surprised that you can see half ball in either direction when properly Centered.

@CJWiley Someone mentioned you've a video out there on CTE aiming? Is there a link available?
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 4 месяца назад
I've never used CTE - my Alignment is Center to Center for most shots, cut shots it changes to Center to Edge but that's just a starting position, I Triangulate my aiming so it's basically second nature.....but the Alignment is challenging and takes about 2-3 weeks to learn and make natural. My instructional videos are at www.CJWiley.com

How does left eye dominant affect this alignment.

my left eye is my center vision. how do i center when i am right handed but my left eye is over the cue?
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 20 дней назад
Everyone can be different and usually favor their dominant eye however it's Above the shot that I recommend Centering your vision and body, then go naturally down and your eyes will probably align properly for you.
@merle7415
@merle7415 3 месяца назад
How do you determine where the cue should be under you...once I clear my hips the cue seems to naturally align under my left hand eye. I shoot left handed.. If I turn more the cue will go under my chin but then my shoulders are turn more and out of position?
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 3 месяца назад
You want to be Centered above the shot and when you go down to shoot you'll instinctively drop into your ideal position as long as your footwork is as I described and demonstrated.
@merle7415
@merle7415 3 месяца назад
@@cjwiley1541 Thank you... I believe then my ideal position is the cue under my left eye when I go down...I do have to open foot more to clear my hips but my right foot parallel... Thanks so much...Your website great and learned a great deal!!

Question: What do you think about wearing ear plugs while shooting in tournaments.
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 8 месяцев назад
I think it would make it difficult to hear the shot, personally I use my senses and one of the best bank pool players in the country told me he banks to make a certain sound - it's easy to get coached these days using an ear piece so they probably shouldn't be allowed
@rifqifalih1968

I think all almost players use this method
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 3 месяца назад
Subconsciously, but it took me a long time and effort to figure out what I was doing exactly to play flawlessly - it's challenging to do and more challenging to teach.

I would love to see a video of you discussing your right foot placement vs the placement Mark Wilson teaches in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ik_m4OYKfo8.htmlm37s He's got his right foot perpendicular to the shot line without crossing over it. I'm not sure if the rest of your alignment is the same, but I'm new to all this and trying to determine which to go with.
@cjwiley1541
@cjwiley1541 9 месяцев назад
What I'm showing is totally different, less moving parts especially with the head - it's easier to learn but to have less moving parts requires a dedicated effort for 8-10 hours until it feels natural to Always have your left foot In Front of the right foot toes/front - the game will get approximately 30% easier within 2-3 weeks from my experience.
