- Dune: Imperium -
is a game that finds inspiration in elements and characters from the Dune legacy, both the new film from Legendary Pictures and the seminal literary series from Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson.
As a leader of one of the Great Houses of the Landsraad, raise your banner and marshal your forces and spies. War is coming, and at the center of the conflict is Arrakis - Dune, the desert planet.
Dune: Imperium uses deck-building to add a hidden-information angle to traditional worker placement.
You start with a unique leader card, as well as deck identical to those of your opponents. As you acquire cards and build your deck, your choices will define your strengths and weaknesses. Cards allow you to send your Agents to certain spaces on the game board, so how your deck evolves affects your strategy. You might become more powerful militarily, able to deploy more troops than your opponents. Or you might acquire cards that give you an edge with the four political factions represented in the game: the Emperor, the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, and the Fremen.
Unlike many deck-building games, you don’t play your entire hand in one turn. Instead, you draw a hand of cards at the start of every round and alternate with other players, taking one Agent turn at a time (playing one card to send one of your Agents to the game board). When it’s your turn and you have no more Agents to place, you’ll take a Reveal turn, revealing the rest of your cards, which will provide Persuasion and Swords. Persuasion is used to acquire more cards, and Swords help your troops fight for the current round’s rewards as shown on the revealed Conflict card.
Defeat your rivals in combat, shrewdly navigate the political factions, and acquire precious The Spice Must Flow cards to lead your House to victory!
- Lost Ruins -
On an uninhabited island in uncharted seas, explorers have found traces of a great civilization. Now you will lead an expedition to explore the island, find lost artifacts, and face fearsome guardians, all in a quest to learn the island's secrets.
Lost Ruins of Arnak combines deck-building and worker placement in a game of exploration, resource management, and discovery. In addition to traditional deck-builder effects, cards can also be used to place workers, and new worker actions become available as players explore the island. Some of these actions require resources instead of workers, so building a solid resource base will be essential. You are limited to only one action per turn, so make your choice carefully... what action will benefit you most now? And what can you afford to do later... assuming someone else doesn't take the action first!?
Decks are small, and randomness in the game is heavily mitigated by the wealth of tactical decisions offered on the game board. With a variety of worker actions, artifacts, and equipment cards, the set-up for each game will be unique, encouraging players to explore new strategies to meet the challenge.
Discover the Lost Ruins of Arnak!

My playgroup has a hard ‘no beverages on the table rule’, after a couple very expensive items got destroyed. Now every time I see a beverage on a game table I become so stressed out I can’t pay attention to what’s happening in the video. There might as well be a monkey with a loaded gun on the table

I have played them both a few times each. It's pretty close between these. Lost Ruins feels more fun casual to me, and I always want to just enjoy and explore different paths to victory. I would absolutely snap up an expansion to this. Dune is a bit more competitive and slightly deeper. It's strange because I always want to play Lost Ruins more but tend to enjoy the plays of Dune slightly more. Both worth getting.

Owned both traded out Arnak for it's lukewarm gameplay, have probably 15 games of Dune Imperium in, and it's tense and exciting each time, one advanced modification is an 8 card market, makes for a bit more agency in deck building

I'm not a hugely competitive player so the idea of just having an adventure with Arnak appeals to me more. Plus I've never read the Dune novels, nor seen the films, but grew up on India Jones and the Tomb Raider games. On the other hand, my best friend loves the Dune books, so I think I'll pick it up for his birthday. Having options is a wonderful thing.

You don't need to know the Dune lore to enjoy the lore. You just need to know there are different factions to which you will be trying to influence to get your victory points. I think what makes Dune stand out is you have to choose between using card to place your workers, and cards purchase more deckbuilding. There is a great tension there.

Honestly as someone who owned Dume and thought I didn't need Arnak because of that then tried a friends Arnak and realized they are only similar in their mechanisms...not in gameplay...feel...experience...theme....its kind of crazy to compare them imo. I think it's natural to want to. However after 15+Dune plays many of which are solo. And like only 5 plays most of which are 2 player I can say they arent close enough alike for me to even think of comparing them. Both will be in the collection and they play vastly different from each other. Excellent games....now I need to check out endless winter!

18:34 Wait a second... In Dune: Imperium you also have multi-use cards. Because if you do not use a card for its ability/to move to a space, you can always keep the card for combat. Tell me THAT is NOT a multi-use card feature!

BGA got me hooked on LRoA; I bought the game and enjoy it every time I play. I've only seen Dune played once (my 8-yr-old actually played it; she enjoyed it), but would very much try it the next time I see it hit the table. One thing about LRoA not mentioned: there's TWO gameboard sides to play, which play very differently. I think that adds a lot to the replayability. Also: LRoA has an expansion out; I'm curious if that would sway any minds (in either direction).

27:34 If you want a little more "interaction"... BTW, this got me started on a topic tangent - Why do we play games to begin with? Most people play games not as an exercise in optimization, but because they want to interact with their friends in some way or another - whether that be "positive" interaction or "negative" ("direct") interaction. The question is how do we include everybody in the game. It is all good and nice to play "multi-player solitaire" games. If that is what you like, then by all means do what you like. I just think that most people - and as I just said - the reason most people play games - is to be able to interact with, meet, and include other people. It is a social aspect. That is why we go to Game Nights to begin with.

I have both games and have played them a couple of times. They are both absolutelly amazing. But, for me, Dune takes the cake. I like worker placement a little bit more than deckbuilding, so it may have something to do with that, BUT what really did it for me is war aspect and specially intrigue cards, that backstabbing aspect I really enjoy. Plus, I read the Dune books when I was younger and I really like to play with the characters and re-discover the Dune universe again, so many cards make me remember characters and lore I thought forgotten. But again, Arnak is not far behind in my list.

Dune is always done when the combat rounds end so there's a timer and a fixed number of buys. DUNE is a RACE. And the influence track is a mini race. A race within a race. The conflict is a betting game, but the cards are a means to an ends of placement and the little edges you can gain.
@Voreten

And Dune is better w higher player count because a race is better with more people bumping shoulders and gasping for the finish.

Probably my most played games of 2020. Arnak more casual and newbie friendly as a lot of folks unfamiliar with the Dune theme tend to switch off. We also need to talk about the best games of 2020 being straight to retail games and not KS projects...is it possible the best part of the KS Project games is the actual funding window and the stretch goals etc. by the time the games arrive 1 or 2 years later we've seen enough of the previews / playthroughs / TTS games that they fade very quickly from memory once the huge boxes arrive.

Absolutely love both games. It really depends on the group I feel as Arnak was an easy teach for me and everyone relates to the theme even if they haven’t played games before. Dune was harder to teach but if you have people who know the dune world much easier. If you are a die hard Dune fan like myself and want to get your group invested get them to watch the movie first. If you love board games I say get both you can’t go wrong and depending on who you teach you have options. And yes bring on Endless Winter...more options more fun yahooooo.

I own both, I prefer Arnak, right now. Imperium needs an expansion. I find that the game is too short for deck building to play enough of a role in the outcome (this may just mean I'm a lousy player and don't have the skill to more effectively use the cards). Perhaps I will use the 8 card market as C suggested here.
@johndavidthacker
@johndavidthacker 3 года назад
Yes. When games are over in 10 turns or less, (my last game was over in 8 turns) there's little point to building a deck. You'll never see the cards you buy in the last 2 or 3 turns.
@Teddy270880
@Teddy270880 2 года назад
I own both. Since I've been owning Arnak for almost a year and Dune is quite fresh for me (it's been hanging around in my collection for about 2 or 3 months but I haven't unpacked it until last week) the latter is more exciting for me. But there are other aspects which make Dune my number one here. First of all I was a bit disappointed when I first played Arnak because I had heard that it's very thematic and makes you feel like Indiana Jones. For me it just doesn't. Don't get me wrong, I think the artwork is gorgeous and some cards and mechanisms really are thematic - I just don't get these Indy vibes. On the other hand Dune almost feels "sober" but - at least for me - it feels more thematic and thus really catches the atmosphere really well plus the board is clearer to read. Not that that is a problem Arnak has. But compared to Dune the board sometimes feels a bit "crowded". Furthermore I like the tension Dune offers in every session. I usually prefer coop games or games where everybody builds their own engines without opponents having the chance to mess it up too much. But the combat in Dune just adds that little spice without being too convoluted - it just hits a sweetspot. My final point is deckbuilding: Sure, in Arnak you put the cards you purchase under your deck instead of your discard pile - and you even get to use artifacts immediately. However, you also have to take into consideration that Dune has at least 7 or 8, more often than not probably 9 or 10 rounds vs. Arnak's 5. That means you'll probably go through your deck roughly twice as often. So for the first couple of games with Dune, deckbuilding for me felt more impactful than in Arnak - after a few games more though I've come to the conclusion, that this aspect is very comparable and both games have the "problems" most deckbuilders have: Just when you feel the deckbuilding starts to kick in, the game is over. But I guess it just has to be this way, so there's no extreme, uncontrollable snowballing. With all that being said, Dune is my favourite here. After I have finished a match I can't wait to play the next one. And that's a feeling I rarely got from games recently. Arnak however is a really good alternative for people who absolutely can't stand any form of conflict - apart from enemy workers taking your spots. After all it's really a matter of taste but for me Dune just feels a bit more... sophisticated I guess you could say.

I really like Dune Imperium. My only problem with the game is with the Market, Turn order, and the Intrigue deck as a whole: randomness that negates all ur hard choices for combat, influence track or endgame just because someone plays a card. Every advantage should be earned as proven by ur foresight/choices not because of luck! Which is why I propose 3 changes: 1) Have the Market be 8 cards instead of 5 OR flip/refresh all unpurchased cards at the end of the round OR both! 2) Fix the Intrigue deck somehow, like drafting display 3 to choose from, so others know what u got, (if they remember), but don't know WHEN you'll play it! OR take out the Endgame VP cards & Plot pay for VP cards (there's only 4) 3) Have a mechanic that allows players to affect turn order! Such as: Have the CHOAM Secure Contract space also have a 1st Player icon meaning u get to give the 1st player coin to ANY player and they immediately become 1st player OR will be 1st player next round. OR each round Player lowest on the VP track goes first then 2nd lowest goes 2nd etc. ties broken per normal endgame rules

I think Arnak wins by theme cause its more accessible and probably more fun, as compared to Dune. At least for me thats where I lean toward. I like Dune Imperium better I think... But I do have to say that I was amazed at how EVERY card in Lost Ruins of Arnak seemed like something I really wanted to have and try. With Dune Imperium half the cards in the row I didn't really care for. (I could be misjudging their true value.) I do have a very good feeling about the Dune Imperium expansion... I heard some things about it that will likely resolve some of people's complaints. (Further customization of your army/faction through tech. Slightly more spaces to pick from. New characters. More influence over spaces much like those final conflict rewards.)

Ive played both games, and Arnak is a very "solo optimisation" game, where if I lose its because I made a mistake in how I played. Dune is a competitive game, where your opponent's moves have a greater impact. I much prefer Dune, and the theming is subtle but actually very Dunish once I really thought about it. Ultimately, Dune is very moreish and a lot of fun, wherr Arnak kinda leaves me drained after a game.

32:01 But again... Most people play games because of the interaction - and the combat provides that. I enjoy Dune more, but Arnak is better designed. I hate deckbuilders with a marketplace that doesn't get trashed. If there is a terrible card in Dune at the start of the game, it will stay there forever and clogs up the card market. In Arnak bad cards get removed consistantly so that you have more options. We houseruled in Dune, that the most right card that costs 4 or less gets trashed in the makers phase. Since then our experience is much better.

@philippegruijthuijzen2789 2 года назад
Some days ago I have played Dune Imperium and Lost Ruins of Arnak on Spelletjesspektakel in the Netherlands. I bought the former (and friend of mine the latter). I evaluate games on two criteria: 1. Does the board game have GOOD MECHANICS? 2. Does the board game have GOOD PLAYER INTERACTION? Both games are deckbuilding and worker placement. Arnak's deckbuilding is better than Dune's. The worker placement of Dune is way better than Arnak's. The worker placement mechanic of Dune is unique: The player needs the right cards to place agents on the board and gain a placement bonus from the board and from the card. Some cards are not used by an agent, and still have value in the reveal phase. That is a fucking interesting mechanic that is only possible in a deckbuilding AND worker placement game. Ankar's worker placement does not really have a strong synergy with the deck building. And, Dune has a better player interaction than Arnak. Why? Dune is more frustrating to play. Dune's board consists of many areas (way more than Arnak) which can be only used by one agent at a time. When you cannot play your agent on a dune board, it is frustrating. If you can (and block somebody else), it is fucking great. And your deck determines which workers you can place on certain areas that turn or not. That is why i am also interested in the deck of my opponent in Dune and not so interested in a deck when i play Arnak. Dune Imperium is definitely a more innovative and skill intensive game than Arnak. I would play Arnak with my unexperienced people to introduce them to a great deck building and worker placement game. I would introduce Dune to experienced players.

30:07 But what if you are either not a huge fan of deckbuilding/are lukewarm on deckbuilding to begin with? What if you only like deckbuilding games in which it is NOT the deckbuilding itself which you enjoy, but what you can do with your deck after deckbuilding - i.e., the worker placement in this case - which is what attracts you to these games to begin with? Perhaps that would be a reason to prefer Dune: Imperium, 'aye?

why not play both. sick of people comparing 2 uncomparable games. Like comparing a horse to a dog.
@VaultBoy13

Because if someone is looking to purchase only one deck-builder/worker-placement game, then a comparison video of two highly regarded games is more valuable than individual reviews. Additionally, this comparison is more like comparing a labrador to a golden retriever. With these games, we're talking about 2 different breeds of dog from the same group.

"You have to talk faster if you are going to be Alex" LOL! 🤣 For me Dune is meh 2.5/5 and Arnak is good 4/5. I friend got Dune and we played it 3 times but I don't think I will play it again. None in my game group understands the hype. You really see the difference in production with both games next to each other.

I didn't feel the theme in Dune Imperium at all. I'm guessing it is because of my lack of knowledge about the world. It felt like I'm just trying to get resources and going up on tracks mostly, got some battle in order to get extra bonuses and trying to use all of those to get victory points. It feels like you can skin it as anything else and it will work just the same.
@Gtomer

I do love the mechanics in it and think if you want a more complex game that use the combination of Deck management and Worker placement then Dune Imperium is great. In Lost ruins of Arnak I think I can feel the theme more, it is more connected for me, in terms of gameplay it is simpler and feels much more easier to get to the table when with new players and you want a fast enough game that is also fun.

I've never seen or read Dune but I have both of these in my collection and I have to disagree that Dune does theme better. For me, it feels very pasted on and abstracted. I do have more fun playing Dune over Arnak (even though I think Arnak blows it out of the water visually) and for that reason it hits the table more often. Also the Solo AI in that game is a bastard, he always takes the spot you want 😂

@@danielmarlett1421 Apples and oranges. Novels and games are different media. D:I and Dune are both boardgames. Calling D:I "Dune" is bound to cause misunderstandings. Snark Faux Ninja comment incoming... I love trying to suggest people play an earth adventurer game or a game based on Dune because it allows me to argue that Indiana Jones was the Kwisatz Haderach (and shot first as his name is Hans in scifi setting), Lara Croft is a Bene Gesserit, and Nathan Drake is a member of the Spacing Guild. 🥷
