Playa de Santiago is a town in the municipality of Alajeró located in the south of the island of La Gomera, in the Canary Islands, Spain. With 1,100 inhabitants, it is the most populated entity in the south of the island.
History
The origin of the town is in a nucleus of fishermen who end up building two canning factories and a series of facilities for the residence of employees and the repair of boats.
In 1917 the Norwegian company Nowga was installed and a decade later the agricultural firm Los Rodríguez López was established. Irrigated agriculture then acquires a remarkable boom, thanks to the channeling of the waters of the upper area and from a small dock in Playa Santiago, the tomato and banana crops that are produced in the place are exported. The crisis of the 1960s and 1970s wiped out this small southern emporium, abandoning most of the farmland and even closing the factories.
In recent years, a new economic activity has emerged in Playa Santiago: tourism and services. The improvements carried out in the port, for fishing and sports use, and the construction by the Fred Olsen company of a hotel complex, the Hotel Jardín Tecina and the only golf course on the island, Tecina Golf, have made this entity in one of the prosperous in the island.
The Santiago Beach Port is autonomously owned. Its main breakwater is 222 meters long and with 100 berths it admits boats of up to 30 meters in length. Maritime excursions and ferries depart from the pier.
The Garajonay Express company linked Playa Santiago with the Valle de Gran Rey port and with the port of San Sebastián de la Gomera and from there to the port of Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife, making a stopover with the Fred Olsen company, with a duration of the crossing of 1 hour and 10 minutes approximately. However, the service ceased in November 2008. Since March 2009, the service has been re-established by the company Fred. Olsen Express being interrupted again on February 1, 2012, due to lack of subsidy.
Since September 2017, the interior line of La Gomera (of which Playa Santiago is part), has been resumed by Fred. Olsen Express, by means of a newly built ship (called Benchi Express) expressly commissioned to carry out said service. In this way, Playa Santiago is once again connected by sea with the port of Valle Gran Rey and with that of San Sebastián, avoiding unnecessary journeys along the tortuous roads of the island.
The beach
Beach about 1000 meters long with dark sand and gravel. It has clear and clean waters that are very popular in summer.
