I think the fish you were looking at was a Orange Roughy which is exceedingly high in Omega 3 fatty acids. Look at the fishes eyes they should be clear & be glossy, pull back the gill plate you know when you cut your finger & it bleeds well the gills should have this sort of colour & gloss, it should smell like when your standing on the beach, the stronger the fish smell the longer the fish has been out of the water. The advantage of buying a whole fish is you can check all the above , after filleting the skeleton you steam which makes it easy to remove the left over flesh including the cheeks of the fish which are supper tasty reduce the liquid to a 1/3 off & bag & freeze, should you be cooking a prawn stir-fry defrost & add towards the end will add another layer to your meal. It's STICKMAN here, go meet the meat at pak&save this week. Meat in New Zealand. It is illegal to feed your animals growth hormones. If hormones or medication is found in any animal at the abattoir it's carcass is sent of to be used as pet food which is a huge monetary loss to the farmer. You will have noticed the difference in flavor in our meat & milk as our bovine population is grass feed not grain feed, We don't have the ability to supply enough pork to satisfy our needs so yes we import (which must be on the label) meat that isn't produced using the same rules that our local farmers must adhere to. Dairy if medication etc is found in milk the milk is dumped at the farmers expense repeat offenders are band from the food chain. Roundup farming. Yes farmers will use this product to kill of weeds which was it's intended use. BUT !!! it is also used say on a field of onions or potatoes. the whole field doesn't reach maturity at the same time which is sooooooooo inconvenient so you spray the whole field wait X amount of days then lift & pack their harvest . When used with GM SEEDS which are modified to survive roundup any problems you spray That is why in the U.S.A. their having to strip Roundup from water supplies as it has flooded most of the aquafers . GM SEED isn't available here in NZ BUT !!! that doesn't mean it's not part of finished product imported here . Kiwi Rod

Hi, enjoying your vlogs, and would like to make a suggestion: the volume goes pretty high in the background music, so when I am watching, I keep having to adjust my volume as it becomes really loud with the b-roll music but not loud enough to hear you when you speak. Hope this is fixable!

Hey, thanks for that feedback! We'll do a better job leveling the volume. We've been trying to remember to use our good mic, too. Let us know if it's better on the next one. :)

I bet you found Christmas day strange sun burn instead of snow/ice burn, a lot of tourist & new immigrants can't understand why us & our children spend from mid spring till mid autumn in bare feet , we have no nasties like snakes , scorpions ,poisons spiders, fire ants & the list goes on the worst we have is Onehunga weed (small prickles ) or animals that want to maim or kill you the nearest we have here are hoods on Harleys. It has been like 25 years since I was last in Christchurch, the earthquakes caused what is called liquification which means all the heaviest parts of the soils sunk & all the lightest rose to the top, your garden, hopefully compost has been added in the past, it looks like maybe brassicas ( cabbage ,cauliflower Brussel sprouts ) in the back of your bed their to close together like they want to be in the center of a 12 inch square there still small so you can transplant them. the potatoes maybe go to a horticulture supply & get some of those large bags or get say halves of a 44 gallon barrel (with holes in the bottom ) check RU-vid LOL as your future crop will hit this layer & have know where to go but upwards YOU DON'T EAT GREEN POTATOES Paknsave is the cheapest but you have less selection I go to my local farmers market most Saturdays .try TUIMATO sauce see if you like this ? Thanks for your insightful comment! You're absolutely right, experiencing Christmas in New Zealand's warm weather was a unique twist for us. We did miss the snow a bit, but more than that, we missed spending the holiday with our parents. Adjusting to the festive season in the sunshine is a new adventure for our family! We haven't quite embraced the full Kiwi barefoot experience beyond our yard yet, but we're certainly enjoying the absence of those pesky critters we're used to back in the States. It's a refreshing change! Our garden has been a real journey of learning and growth - literally! We're about a month ahead in our garden adventures compared to our videos. So far, we've had a great harvest of zucchini, broccoli, onions, and green onions. The radishes and potatoes, however, are still a work in progress. You're spot on about us planting them too close; we might have gotten a bit overexcited and tried to fit too much in our raised beds. Lesson learned for next time! As for shopping, we've visited both Pak'nSave and New World. We've noticed the limited selection at Pak'nSave too. And you're right, we haven't explored the local farmers' markets yet, but it's definitely on our list. It sounds like a fantastic way to support local growers and find some unique produce. Also, we haven't tried TUIMATO sauce yet, but now we're intrigued. We'll be sure to give it a taste and let you know what we think! Thanks again for your comment and the helpful gardening tips. We're always eager to learn more about life here in NZ!

I don't know where you got your seedlings from but I would go get some more, cauliflower & brokerly. There is another 1 which is a cross but I don't remember the name`& plant them out NOW !!! You should get a couple of crops (plantings) before the snow knocks your plants over .If you don't have a chest freezer get 1 you just have to be more organized compared to a upright (when you lift up the lid all your cold doesn't fall out on the floor)_ Your crop cut into Florets & blanch (drop into boiling water for a minute or so then drop into COLD water with ice in it) when dry place on a tray & freeze (free flow) then into a zip lock bag & store in deep freeze Keep an eye on the price of capsicums at the markets when you start paying by the kilo then do the same as above. Have you ever done what you know as canning what we call bottling ??? Kiwi Rod

Hey Rod! Wow thanks for the tips! We've managed to harvest a TON of zucchini, and the broccoli and onions have done really well. Struggling with the potatoes - have managed to get a few small ones, but nothing substantial. Our radishes and daikons are also not doing so well. I think we planted them way too close together! Lots to learn. No, we've never done any canning/bottling, but it does seem like a good idea to take it up. And yes - we do want to get ahold of a freezer when we're able. :)
