I am learning bass at the very young age of 50 (never played another instrument before) and yesterday i tried Rooster and now understand why i used to like AIC bass style..mike starr wears a THE CURE T shirt at the beginning of this video....same dark and expressive bass tones as in Robert Smiths songs (he is my passion since i was in my teens)..

Yeah apparently on the Dirt tour Mike let his addictions become top priority. Skipping practice cause he was out doing or scoring drugs and also (as noted before) scalping tickets and offering backstage passes to people willing to pay.

Pretty cool clip, Paul. I’m a big Alice In Chains fan and it fascinating to learn about mike’s playing technique. Plus I’ve been checking Out your other videos quite some time and they’re quite informative. Fun fact: mike uses a flanger pedal in the bass track for them bones. It’s not noticeable in the actual song, but you’ll definitely notice it on the isolated bass track.

It seems crazy to have to double the basslines with an acoustic bass to get a good bass sound. Maybe it was just one or two songs for a specific sound.

That had to be an easy one after Geddy Lee
@heinrich5098
@heinrich5098 2 года назад
Well; just because he doesent play as fancy as geddy did, doesent mean he is a worse musician. He just cared about other musical things than geddy did, so they are both very good at what they do. Mike was more about attitude and stage presence, which isnt bad or a worse attribute than geddys technical perfection. So pls, dont say hes bad or worse, just because you dont get the things he was about. You cant really compare them
@travisstafford397

@@heinrich5098 I didn’t mean any disrespect to Mike Starr or his contributions. He played perfectly for AiC. My statement was more intended as easy for the analysis. AIC is still an unknown band to most (in general) or maybe people just don't care anymore...AIC is one of my all time fav bands (since 1992) with Layne being my fav singer but they were never that huge or "mediatic" like Nirvana for example. Not even close. Most people (especially younger generations) have never heard of Layne Staley or Jerry Cantrell. Almost all I know have heard of Metallica, AC/DC, Nirvana, etc...but have no clue about AIC. I mean even most people (younger generations too) that are not Nirvana fans know who Kurt Cobain was...based on my experiences. I also know people that don't like AIC music at all (with the exception of few songs maybe) because they find it too depressive, hard to listen.
