08:30 - Lay Out the Court
Want to play pickleball but do not have courts nearby. No problem.
Is there a tennis court available?
With some strips or cones, you are ready to go.
A whole pickleball court is only 2 feet longer than a tennis court’s service boxes. The singles lines on a tennis court (the long lines running down the court nearest to the center of the court) are each only 3 ½ feet wider than the long lines along with a pickleball court. You probably see where I’m going with this.
In order to play pickleball on a tennis court, you will need at least a few cones or other markers (you can use water bottles, clothing, or pretty much anything that will not permanently or semi-permanently mark the court). We do not advise using chalk, paint, tape (or other permanent or semi-permanent markings) without the permission of the court owner or manager.
An easy way to mark the pickleball lines on a tennis court is to use short rubber strips that are specifically designed for this purpose. The strips have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, easy to store and transport, less obstructive on the court, and overall providing a better playing experience.
Some guidelines for how to play pickleball on a tennis court that does not have a pickleball line on it (if any doubt, check out our diagram showing you these steps):
- The service box lines that run parallel to the net will be the baseline (backline) of your pickleball court.
- The centerline of the service box will be the centerline of your pickleball court.
- For the sidelines of your pickleball court, you have two options:
- The recommended option is to mark off a sideline 3 ½ feet from each of the singles lines on the tennis court. You can do this by just walking it off - just remember to use the same person’s foot for each line. You can then place a few cones or other markers along the sideline. Line calls will be approximate, just give the benefit of the doubt to the ball being “In.”
Another option is using the singles lines from the tennis court as your sidelines. This option makes the court much wider than a regulation pickleball court and will require much more side-to-side movement. This option should only be used if you don’t have enough cones for other markers and are physically able to cover the additional court.
You will also need to mark off the kitchen; no volley zone as it is more formally called. This is the only part of the court that you must mark off in order to play pickleball. After all, the kitchen is what makes pickleball. To mark off the no volley zone, you will walk off 7 feet from the net towards the baseline and drop your markers there. We recommend using 2 to 3 markers, one along each sideline where it intersects the kitchen line and one on the centerline, as long as it does not unreasonably interfere with play. Stating the obvious, make sure your markers do not create a safety risk for you or your fellow players.
The last thing you will do is to lower the tennis net 2 inches in the middle. This step is optional - you can play pickleball with a 36-inch net and doing so will make the regulation net seem much easier. To do this, you will slide the tennis net Center strap to one side approximately an inch or so. We do not recommend making permanent alterations to the tennis net center strap and further recommend placing the strap back into its original position at the end of the play. Leaving the strap over to one side can cause the net to lose tension affecting both tennis players and future pickleball play.
To play the game, you will follow the normal rules of pickleball with one exception and one recommendation. The exception is that if the ball comes into contact with any marker on the court, the point is replayed (we refer to this as a “let”). The recommendation is that the benefit of the doubt is given on both “out” calls as well as kitchen violation calls. Our objective is to get some exercise and hopefully enjoy the game and it would be a shame for that to be overshadowed by close line calls.
That’s it. Suit up, grab your paddle and balls (if you need any of these you can find them at www.In2Pickle.com/store), and go play the new tennis on your neighborhood tennis court.
This part of our Pickleball Getting Started series. This series is aimed at players beginning on their pickleball journey.

Here in Portugal we don't have cheap pickleball courts, I Had to buy a set of rubber marks, but some seconds ago there was light in my brain: I remembered that tapes used when you paint the walls that don't lose glue and are very cheap and ecological - ideal to use as markers at the free padel courts in my town, that haven't the ground painted👌

If it hits comes we play give the team that hit the ball the win on that serve. We don’t do re serve. We used to. But we found the majority of the time it keeps it moving and usually if played in our mind they would likely have won as they already hit a winner or have us more out of position. Plus the next people waiting get there quicker 😊

I found a tennis court that is lined with one pickleball court. Does moving the middle net to a height of 34" makes the edges of (the pickleball court) 36" or will I need some sort of strap/band to pull the sides as well? I thought of loosening the net tension but that will sag the middle as well if I am not mistaken.
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 9 месяцев назад
Hello Josh. Pulling the strap over should be close enough. That said, if I may make a suggestion: leave the net be. A 2 inch higher net will provide an increased challenge and make it so that when you play on a regulation net you will have a built in advantage. It took me a time or two but I finally convinced my friends to play tennis net high. Take care.

Thanks for the vid, actually the vinyl link doesn't work and I couldn't find those products in your webshop. We are about to teach kids to play pickleball, but we don't have enough pickleball courts for all. Down below there was a comment saying that it doesn't make sense for people playing on a court like this. I guess kids, until they are beginners, won't mind if the lines are not always 100% perfect, as long as they can keep on playing, so I think this is a good example.

Pickleball players have ZERO etiquette and will interrupt even if you have the court reserved trying to figure out how long you will be there when it is readily available to see how long courts are reserved. Not to mention they mess with the height of the tennis net and never fix it. There are over 20 pickleball courts in a 5 mile radius around me. Pickleball should not be played on a tennis court. Period.
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 9 месяцев назад
Common now. Tennis players ask the same questions. Will agree about the net. Should be left as was. Otherwise disagree. If a court is available it should be used.

Today public tennis courts are underutilized nowadays (i.e. never used in most places anymore) and it’s better to just go the manager of the courts and persuade them to line them for pickleball permanently. That’s what I did in our community.

Playing on a bigger court and then going to the smaller court would not be an advantage, it would be a disadvantage. It's better than not playing at all but when you have less area to hit the ball in to, you will have to adjust your shots accordingly.

@@diamondhandtraders8619 that is true. I saw that recently. The thing is that pickleball is growing at an even faster clip. I do not recall the exact percentage but it is a multiple of tennis. I am a former tennis player (whole life playing). There is space for both sports. The reason we use tennis courts is because that is what exists. If it were the other way around I am sure we could accommodate tennis at a pickleball facility that had excess capacity.

Sorry but this video is BS. Any decent player needs to have lines. They need to come up with release tape that doesn't leave permanent residue after the tape is removed. There is a much better way to play pickleball on tennis courts using existing lines. People need to understand that if you tape off a tennis court and the tape leaves residue, it ruins the tennis court.
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 3 года назад
Not sure I follow why it’s bs to play with rubber strips. If you have a more permanent solution more power to you. Happy to share any thoughts you have. The key is to be able play the game.
@komergrowl7963
@komergrowl7963 3 года назад
@@BestPickleballCoach If people want to just get out and hit the ball, why even worry about lines, or keeping score? I think your video is aimed at that group of people, which is fine. To actually think you could use rubber strips and cones and imaginary lines in an actual game, where the score is kept, is the problem. A decent player can actually aim for and hit a given line. Also the cones are a hazard, I know i wouldn't want to trip over one. Also how does the ball bounce if it hits the rubber strip? I am guessing that is doesn't. I don't mean to be a jerk, but you have to have lines that stay put. Tape is fine, but the tape I have seen used on our area tennis courts leaves a residue that leaves a permanent mark (line). The p-ballers don't bother to remove the tape as a courtesy to the tennis people. I enjoy both sports, but they are two different animals and should be played on separate courts (yes, lobby your local city for dedicated p-ball courts!). There is a solution that combines both sports and can be played on a regulation tennis court but most folks think I'm crazy. I can follow up if there is any interest in my idea.
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 3 года назад
@@komergrowl7963 definitely interested in anything that helps players enjoy both sports on the same facilities. You are right that eventually having pickleball courts as well as tennis courts is optimal. But what to do in the meantime? In the video we discussed playing with just the service box lines (I am pretty sure that is in there). But players should be able to play the game with the dimensions of a pickleball court even if that means using rubber strips. We also address the tape issue on the video. The end objective is to allow pickle ballers to use what are generally publicly funded facilities to play the sport they choose without damaging the courts.

@@longtimelo That might actually work...i have only seen blue painters tape, i wonder if they have a lighter color. This next spring I am going to try playing pickleball in a different way, with 3 players on a side, using existing lines and on a tennis court. The extra width is offset by having a third player. The rules of pickleball are flawed (the kitchen rule). Everyone I've played with breaks this rule, but who can watch where the opposing player strikes the ball in mid-air and where they're feet land when you are trying to get ready to return a slam?
