As a fan of the Splatoon series, I've never played the original Splatoon. So today, I'll be trying it out and enjoying it before the Wii U servers shutdown.

A bit of a fun thing I remember regarding Splatoon is how the first hackers didn't actually do anything bad to the game. They namely just changed the color of ink and whitelisted the "forbidden ink colors" black list that the game has, So the forbidden white ink was playable. So was yellow and brown. Very rarely do you ever find a hacker that makes the game more fun for everyone

aww man, this is fun. i only ever got to play a demo of splatoon 1 (at nintendo world nyc, a very fond memory), it's nice to watch someone play it before the original servers go down. maybe i'll grab a wiiu to mod and play it myself someday :]

I wish I could boot up Splatoon 1 before it goes down but I have absolutely no clue where my Wii U is… Btw I highly recommend doing the story mode if you haven’t. (Though that can still be done after the servers go down.) The campaign is definitely better than Splatoon 2’s, and while the final boss probably isn’t the best in the series, it’s still my personal favorite.

This just makes me sad. I got a Wii U for an absolute steal off Ebay at the start of this past December, with the intention of finally playing Splatoon 1 for the first time and playing it regularly for its last few months. And it was SO much fun despite me having played 2 and 3 a lot already, I've LOVED it. But while I initially played it a lot at the start, for pretty much all these 3 months I've been stuck struggling with schoolwork and all and I've missed nearly ALL these days to experience the game. I had a whole bucketlist I wanted to do to get as full an experience as I could, including unlocking and buying everything. But I ended up not being able to do pretty much any of that and this makes me sad, there was so much more I wanted to do but no time. I look at this video and just think of what might have been, what I could have done if I just didn't have what I had going on, how much more I could have enjoyed this game and gotten out of it these past 3 months but didn't. I haven't even played all the maps yet. I really wish the online wasn't shutting down, but also just that life wouldn't get in the way so much, I love this game and what I have gotten to do has been so fun and some of the maps are absolutely incredible. I know Pretendo's going to be a thing, but one you have to set that up rather than just hopping right in, which many probably won't do, and two, there's probably just going to be less players so I don't know how easy actually getting matches will be, especially with the Japanese players which make up a lot of this game's current playerbase. It's not like Mario Kart Wii which is one of the best-selling games of all time on one of the best-selling consoles of all time, so even the fraction of that game's players that were willing to make the fanmade online service and play on it is still large enough to function quite well, if anything this is the opposite being a Wii U game. I still don't regret buying my Wii U though, again I got it for an absolute steal compared to what other sellers were charging for systems in worse condition than what I got, not to mention it ended up being one of the Wii Us with Mario Kart 8 installed so I got a free Mario Kart 8 copy too (not needed since I have 8 Deluxe but still), and can use it finally play my Wii games when I'm away at school since my monitor only has HDMI while my Wii is component, so even if I got it to be a Splatoon machine and didn't get to use it much for that purpose I still have plenty of other uses for it (and again, there IS Pretendo to at least try).

It really is sad but we can only enjoy the time we have left with the game and the memories we made with it along the way. One of the main reasons I'm making these videos is to document Splatoon as a game, to show what that experience is like with no filter. It is a treasures among many things and I want it to last as long as it can. And I hope these videos do just that.

People need to give pretendo more respect it’s arguably better then the servers right now and does more if peoooe aren’t willing to use pretendo it’s their fault and they didn’t care in the first place the pretendo team has put a lot of time and effort into archiving everything

A more in-depth explanation would be a team of very talented people who put their heart and soul into archiving the original 3ds and wii u servers since nintendo doesn’t want to support them anymore just like when wimmfi was made years ago for the wii and the ds pretendo serves the purpose of reviving miiverse splatoon 1 Mario kart 8 Mario maker Mario kart 7 and the rest for example they have an archive of every single Mario maker 1 level out there ready to inject into their custom servers and they have been working on it for 2-3 years to the public they have had public demos and stuff out you can make your own pretendo account and all and I would recommend checking out their website they run on wii u 3ds and even emulators

@@xBrayL That's true, but that doesn't change the fact that not everyone's gonna go through the trouble of setting it up. Maybe some just don't want to mod their consoles because they have fears over doing that (regardless of how safe it actually is), maybe some are either too casual or just out of the loop and completely unaware it's an option, and of course like I said there's the Japanese players. They are a massive part of the game's playerbase and it's way less likely many of them will set Pretendo up, not because they don't care, but for one because the whole language barrier thing could make them less in touch with the whole thing, or also I've been told that in Japan there's actually issues with legality over doing something like that and modding your system in this way and all. I don't know how true that is, but if it is true that they either legally can't or that doing something like that is culturally frowned upon, then that's a big hit to the playerbase right there that's kinda unavoidable.

Pretendo is a project developed to build custom Wii U and 3DS servers for games of the consoles, so while Splatoon online will still be possible with modding it won't be the same by a long shot.
