With a thermoblade, you can hit edible fish, which will be cooked instantly. No need to catch the fish and bring it to fabricator to cook. I think you missed one PDA next to officer Keen's lifepod (it is next to the pod). Another PDA in the base on the top of the mountain. And you can enter the multipurpose room on the island's lower base- there are a couple of things to pick up.

There are many things that can be eaten and gives some food and some water around. For example, many fishes gives food and a little water, but a few of them gives more water. Creepvine samples also eatable, as well as bulbo trees or marblemelons or something more. Actually, you have ext/int growbeds blueprints... and plant pots. Read everything and think, because there are many hints mentioned there that are not obvious for the first time. About places... you can go to the Aurora, you can go to the Proposed degasi base, or to the Iceland with a big gun. Or to the other places with lifepods. Just look carefully around, don't let your fear to take you away faster than you might notice something interesting.

Instead of killing stalkers, try to feed them. Keep a fish in hand till he takes it. Grab and have the same fishes to be prepared for pack of them (game will takes next fish to the hand automatically only if the same fish already in the inventory).
