Wouldn't be surprised if that was the original concept with the originally announced walk around alien characters, and cutting them and figuring out how to implement this without them is why it took so long to add it.

I think the most it does is somehow interfacing with this door panels and your phone, to tell it you are actually there, I guess. That's why he failed that one time, because the band didn't interface with the door panel, while the phone is probably just scanning some pattern on the door with the camera. It's not strictly necessary in my opinion, but at least it seems it does at least something the phone can't do on it's own, like the flashing and vibrating.

This looks like the biggest waste of time, money, and energy. I can’t imagine walking all over creation when it’s been as hot as it is trying to do this. Then you’re looking at your wrist, your phone, and sticking your arm in a hole. The Pirate game and Sorcerer’s of the Magic Kingdom were so much better.

Do you truly think Chapek had anything to do with this game? Give that narrative a rest. It is beyond old.
