The secret to this amp is in the midrange knob. If you don't know, the midrange control was added and inserted in the volume circuit and not the bass and treble circuit, thus it's works somewhat like an overdrive. I own a 715 clone and it's pure magic!

I was actually able to get the DR. Robert sound out of my old Vox tonelab se, I bet with the newer modellers, using EQ that it could be very closely replicated, I came really close on the old modeller, Just mainly Goosed the Mid Range on an Ac30, Bet Kempers, helix, fractal, etc could do it. WAY CHEAPER and it was fun trying to replicate the DUMBLE of the Beatle Amps.

this is a fun video and all but I realized something while watching it. typically whenever I hear tone recreation vids my mind automatically writes it off. because I'm thinking "Nothing can get close to the real thing." but then I realized that the exact sound I'm expecting to hear is actually just the recording I'm so familiar with. specifically: the character of the production / analog recording process. so this actually could be the real thing. because this is the physical sound vibration the Beatles would've actually heard in the room with them while playing. very fascinating to think about.

I think the thing with the Bassman and why it sounds so much tighter and clearer than the Vox is that Fender had 10+ years on them in terms of building bass amplifiers. Guitar amps are easy, reproducing low end frequencies are a much bigger challenge especially for back then. Of all the amps Fender built between 1952 and 1965 like the Bandmaster, Twin, Deluxe and so on, the Bassman saw the most revisions out of all of them; it's why the 4x10 5F6A Bassman was only produced for less than a year. It really wasn't until the late 60s, early 70s proper bass amps as we know them today became available like the Ampeg SVT.

in my humble opinion 'PAPERBACK WRITER' is the first truly heavy metal riff in modern music. distortion, muted palm picking, everything louder than everythang else, etc. it's all there. at the bare minimum i'd damn sure call it proto metal but i have yet to hear anybody else credit it as such. and.......fun fact: JOHN L. sings background vocals aside from that he does not appear anywhere on 'TAXMAN'.

That was absolutely brilliant - many thanks, Perry. Loved your playing, the information you included, and the sounds you got - the guitar, and bass, and drums were fantastic. (Were there no tea towels on your drums for 'PW'?). Out of curiosity, how do you mix your videos?
@perrystanleyNumber9
@perrystanleyNumber9 2 дня назад
Thanks! I try to match the sounds to what is on the record. Sometimes Tea towels get the sound, sometimes just the snare with nothing on it. Whatever works . The music and sound are generally mixed in Cubase, and then the audio is imported into Final Cut Pro. Mixing the music is the easy part for me because I have been recording music for many years. The combination of video and music is the more challenging part for me. Sometimes I use audio from the iphone12 for talking which is what I shoot with, but other times I have a mic catching talking audio . All the visual effects are from Final Cut Pro, but in the future I hope to learn other programs from Adobe. Thanks for watching!

Such a cool amp. Love your collection of gear. I think you should do a bunch of neural amp model captures (it's like the kemper profiler, but open source software) of the UL730, and its speaker cab with that mic channel you have. It's such a rare amp. I doubt I'll ever get to play one, but would be happy to buy a bunch of capture files. You clearly have an ear for tone, and know how to record a good sound from the gear.

@AllenGarberGuitarFun
@AllenGarberGuitarFun 4 месяца назад
@@bobbystereo936 Yes, that is not really a “book” per se, it is just a collection of the interviews that Jimmy gave to Guitar World editor Brad Tolinski, a gentleman that I am proud to call a friend. Page did not know what the Vox UL-4120 was called at the time that he gave that particular quote. He did mistakenly call it a “Vox Super Beatle” and on one occasion a “Vox Super Reverb” in these interviews. But photographic evidence and Page’s own book ‘Jimmy Page: The Anthology’ have corrected this. Page does not have his original Vox UL-4120 head anymore…it was likely sold or stolen. Sometime in the early 2000s, Page bought a Vox UL-7120 head instead because he could not source an original UL-4120. This 7120 was used in the ‘Play It Loud’ exhibit at The Met in New York City and in photos in ‘The Anthology’ as a stand-in for the UL-4120. They are similar amps…the UL-4120 was designated as a bass guitar amp and the UL-7120 was designated for guitars, however the only difference is the addition of a fuzz circuit in the 7120 versus the 4120 which does not have that circuit. Page has never owned or used a Vox UL-730…

For a Solid State amp. it was different for sure, mine worked still when I sold it in the early 80's, I had gotten it in 77. It was one loud amp. if you used it that way. I never gigged it, just to DARN big. Reliability is what killed them for sure Thomas was a Get Rich quick company for sure. I never tried jumpering the channels maybe a good thing I did not, i might have found out about the Reliability of them. Jumpering might have made the MRB usable. I just always had it in the channel that the Distortion worked in. The MRB was really neat though, kind of like a Varitone switch.

Well obviously nothing beats the real thing, but the Oso is easily a close second above the Dr Robert ;you can get more sounds on each over the doctor Robert.Having said that, I think the doctor Robert definitely gets you there . I have the oso hooked up to a real ul 715 cabinet, and it’s a great amp, really well made and I would rather record with that over a pedal. But the pedal is definitely good enough to record and be convincing.it is a great option for the sound.

Late to the party, but this is awesome! Thanks for sharing, Perry. Honestly, I’m now wondering if the Mach Shau on the Aclam Dr Robert is closer to how you cranked or if it’s the fuzz. Either way, your chops are phenomenal. Delicious tones everywhere!

How does the Aclam Dr. Robert now compare to the actual amplifier?
@perrystanleyNumber9
@perrystanleyNumber9 7 месяцев назад
I think it does a great job of capturing the distorted sound aspect of the amp. The amp itself can do so much more. For instance I don’t think I would use the pedal to try and get the bass sounds I can get with the amp. It certainly captures the character of the distortion aspects of the amp but not the clean sound of the amp as far as I remember. I no longer have the pedal because I obviously don’t need it when I have the real thing. It’s a good pedal to go after the ul sound.

I'd like to know how the UL series compare generally to the Conqueror and how close the Conqueror can get to Revolver tones. The control and channel options seem pretty similar, but maybe the UL valves add something crucial.

Have you tried to lower the guitar volume with the fuzz on? Many fuzzes of the time respond really well to the guitar volume control and clean up nicely!

Have you tried an Aclam Dr. Robert pedal? Most people can't get a UL730. How long ago did you start your journey with the audio gear? I collect stuff but haven't done as much as you so far. I have 8 old 0-18 Martin guitars. They don't sound like a record but they all sound good and different. 1923 to 1968. I have a lot of different amps. AC-15 types, a lot of Tweed amps, a couple Tweed Bandmaster types (Victoria, Dr. Z), Soldano, Princeton Reverb's, Marshalls, ... A LOT of pedals. I like delay pedals.

@@perrystanleyNumber9 I got back into playing guitar in 2001. I bought a Martin 00-18SH (Steve Howe). Then I bought several electric guitars. Now I have 25 Martin guitars. Somebody I know used to call me Mr. Fuzztone because I had so many guitar pedals. Your collection is very interesting. Because I am an old guy, I went to see A Hard Day's Night when it first came out. Never saw the Beatles. My lady saw them front row one time. Over the last few years I got carried away and bought a lot of synthesizes and a few classic string machines such as a Roland VP-330 MK 1 and Korg Lambda. Oh well.

It really depends who you buy it from, if it comes with the cab, and how original it is. I’ve seen a cab and head go for $13,000, but here in The US not too long ago I saw a head only sell for 11,000. There is a head only on reverb selling for $16,000!

Great, informative video, but you didn't make it clear why, if it's a "great amp" (as you say), that it was such a huge commercial failure in 1966-67.
@perrystanleyNumber9
@perrystanleyNumber9 9 месяцев назад
I can only guess why 75 out of 100 amps were returned. At the time they had a very different sound of distortion that perhaps people weren't used to hearing, and the reverb certainly wasn't anywhere near as good as the Fender Twin. It took the Beatles among others to demonstrate how the sounds could be applied to music. I think it's a great amp because it is versatile. I think I demonstrated that in the video. It gets a beautiful distortion in varied ways depending on if you use the distortion circuit or just push the amp in either channel. It also sounds great on bass and McCartney got some of his most celebrated bass sounds on Pepper with it. Thanks for watching!
