Playing the Worst Senran Kagura Game(s) 

Recently fell in love with this series, heavy fan-service, stupidly fun humor and gameplay, what's not to love? Got introduced when I found Estival Versus dirt cheap and it got me hooked. Now I have all the games in the franchise!

The 3DS capture actually looks great. Yes a direct feed would remove the lines and stuff, but the camera is stable and captures all the colour and contrast, isn't too dim, and honeslty gives me a better idea of what playing the game actually looks like.

To explain about the 3DS and Vita Senran game's timeline in a nutshell: yes the Versus series (Vita games) and the mainline series (3DS) are on different timelines. It was hinted at in Estival Versus but outright stated in Peach Beach splash that they are alternate timelines and as of right now the mainline series is done with it's story while the Versus series is still on going. I really LOVE the Senran series and I hope you do more videos on these games.

Started playing Burst as my first game in the series this week. Wanted to play these games for a while after almost 10 years of purposefully avoiding it. I don't know what to fully expect from the gameplay yet, but if what it shows initially is all you get for the entire game, I can easily see how it can become quite monotonous very early on, hopefully it doesn't end with just that, it's just sorta forgivable since you have so many characters to choose from. Characters are very charming, and so far it seems like the story really compliments their personalities. It was quite shocking to find a full-blown, old-style NVL story section that was purely focused on character development very early on in a product sold as a "horny game". This is all my first impression. I'm not going to say it's not a fan-service game, but I'll say that it has a level of passion and effort put into it that goes beyond just making a cash-grab ecchi-ge, and actually understands how to make a good game while also displaying a good bit of fan-service. I think if you took one or the other out, it wouldn't be nearly as appealing. If this is apparently the worst game, then I'm glad I'm starting with it, cuz it means it can only get better.

Deep Crimson was great. It had better and not re-used level design(most if not all of the playstation games re use level designs even for bosses), tag team mechanic, actual tag team supers that varied per team(not the exact same team supers like the playstation games), bosses, great music, weapon skins, improved customization(compared to the first), best opening, a playable male character, more content, modes, and replay value, improved game play and good frame rate. Also co-op is great when you find it. My favorite game in the entire series.

Great video. I've only played Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash and Estival Versus. I enjoyed them both though, even with completely different gameplay styles.

Where to begin. Okay, Deep Crimson is mostly seen as "the worst" due to it largely being a victim of circumstance. Processing power didn't play as much a factor as a.) Shinovi Versus being released at the same time as the anime for marketing support, b.) Shinovi Versus marking the debut of Yumi, BY FAR the most popular character in Japan and who Deep Crimson doesn't have, and c.) a balance issue at launch involving an early boss fight with Yomi that Japanese fans deemed too hard, and was patched before the game hit stateside. All these things combined left Deep Crimson in the dust relative to Shinovi Versus at the time - less marketing, lack of the most popular character, angry fans over a game balance issue that got patched AFTER the damage was done. I personally think this is a shame because I find the 3DS games to be the BEST entries in the series. Burst and Deep Crimson not only do a much better job of balancing story and fanservice, but I think they also have the best difficulty curves to boot. In fact, I think Deep Crimson is the gold standard for the series because it's clear that it received extra attention relative to other entries - the animations are better, there's extra modes and unlockables like Yoma's Nest, shinobi stones, and joke weapons, it actually explored the idea of yoma battles to an appreciable degree, and the DLC is actually quite intriguing with its silly scenarios and unlocks. To me, it is clearly the game that received the most love in development, the Playstation/PC entries seem more copy/paste in comparison. And as for Burst, I think it has the best story, characterization, and natural difficulty curve in the series to date, and is let down EXCLUSIVELY by its framerate. If it ran better, it'd fight Deep Crimson for the best game in the series.

Once you emulate the 3DS version of Burst like I did with capable enough hardware, those performance issues disappear completely. Found out that it's one of those few 3DS games with an uncapped dynamic framerate. and lemme tell you, without the lag, it's like playing a whole new game. Because of this, I actually prefer how this version plays over Renewal.

Nice video. I actually started the series with SV and playing Burst later down the line made me appreciate both games even more. I'm glad they're remaking it for the PS4 for those that never got the chance to experience the story. I actually found SK2 to be more frustrating for me to play than I did with Burst 3DS.

Deep Crimsons opening song "Beyond Light and Darkness" was the best in the franchise.

All the SK games are great. The worst for me though "gameplay wise" is the rhythm game because not all like me are good at games like that. Burst even with low framerates is still a playable game with a great story to tell.

I picked up Deep Crimson: Double D edition at Gamestop because I was with a friend and thought it'd be funny to be a meme... I was not expecting that game to actually be fun, but here I am... still playing these games

Performance of Old3ds games doesn't get improved when played on a New3ds unless the game got an update to take advantage of the new hardware (which these games didn't) The games run in Dold3ds mode for the sake of compatability. This can be bypassed if you mod the console but compatibility isn't perfect and I haven't tried it for these games yet.

Just wanted to tell ya the reason why SK Burst runs at the same speed on both new and old 3DS consoles. You see, most of the games that were designed to run on the old model (an example is Mario Kart 7, or Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D) won't run with the increased CPU clock speed that the new console offers. You can easily set the CPU clock speed on the maximum on these games too, but you'll need to modify your 3DS (installing a Custom Firmware for example). These games also don't use the larger cache space offered by the new console, and you can speed up loading times activating it just like you do with the CPU clock speed. That's it! Hopefully this was helpful to someone :D

While it's not exactly legal, emulating both of these games via the Citra3D 3DS emulator will bring both Burst 3DS and Deep Crimson up to a solid 60 FPS, with high resolution to boot. Give it a shot sometime if you're curious.

For me Burst hearkened back to classic 2D beat em ups that don't get made much anymore like Turtles in Time or Super Double Dragon, Deep Crimson tried to do too much with the 3d environments which isn't the 3DS's strong suit with no dual analog, and the huge boss battles that were never fun, the balance is also completely broken with Mirai's Grenade stance just killing everything. Also Burst's story is way better and it made me cry multiple times. I can't even tell you the story of Deep Crimson other than that there's little girl that grows up Burst also has some of my favorite tracks in the series, Hikage's theme, Battle Rhapsody, and Law of the Defeated makes me tear up every time I hear it

I definitely agree that Burst is the worst in the series from a purely objective standpoint. However, I still consider it my favorite in the series. Despite its major drawbacks, I still can’t help but absolutely love its strong points like the quality of the story, soundtrack, and characters. Also, there’s just a certain charm to the game that keeps bringing me back. It and Deep Crimson are honestly my preferred SK games, but that’s not to say the others are bad.

The series is more than just the physical aspects. The scripts are fun, the gameplay is great, and I like the arcs on storylines. I had an argument with a more “upper class” friend and I said it’s no different than his French burlesque shows

Having a New 3DS, I can confirm that Senran Kagura Burst does NOT take advantage of the beefier hardware... normally. If you have a modded N3DS, you can force the console to use the extra hardware in the game, resulting in smoother overall performance.

From what i recall, Deep Crimson was rejected because it was too difficult. Many players couldn't even get past the tutorial boss fight against Yomi at the start of the game and the difficulty had to be reduced in a later patch. The west got the Yomi nerf as default. Despite the whole jumping heavy attack spam, you can't be quite as mindless as Versus and that turned a lot of people off. Personally I loved the 3DS games. I have a high tolerance for performance jank so the frame rate stuff barely registered with me, but that's just me. Still though, they're quite fun beat'em ups and they have a lot of heart to them. I gotta say though, I especially liked the ass and thigh jiggles in Deep Crimson. Yeah sure big anime boobs is Senran's main thing but I appreciate giving some love to other areas too.

the new 3ds systems don't boost the performance without a title asking for the extra processing power. However if you have a hacked system you can force the higher processing, which actually does boost performance, outside of transformations and special moves for some reason. So I would only recommend burst under that stipulation.

Deep Crimson is a fantastic game. I own all of the Senran Kagura games. I guess there's no accounting for taste.

I personally find the first SK game as my favorite game in the series: nice story, fantastic soundtrack, and addictive gameplay, also amusing visuals for what it is. SK2 is a total opposite, lol, somehow I find the combat very clunky, also you can just jump and press Y repeatedly and finish the game just with that, that broke the game for me. Great video!

Deep Chrimson was the 3DS game we deserved

I'd say the reason people aren't keen on Deep Crimson is the sheer fact it's literally NON-EXISTANT physically. I'd love to get a physical copy for my 3DS, as I managed to find the first on a whim in a Grainger Games in Nottingham. The only times I've seen a PAL version of Deep Crimson available to buy online in the UK is with prices well in excess of £100, which for a game from 2015 is quite frankly ridiculous.

The dagger throws in deep Crimson felt weirder and some of the boss battles are pretty hard later on when you face down big demons.

Deep Crimson 86ed the aerial rave. That's my reason for not liking it as much as Burst.

Just a guess but I assume the higher score for Burst was probably because less people reviewed that game because it was digital only. More reviewers played Deep Crimson and diluted the review pool. I really enjoyed Deep Crimson, it's the first SK game I played all the way to the end.

I found Deep Crimson to be rather frustrating combat wise, didn't have the same flow as Burst and couldn't match the proper 3d combat of the Vita games. Depp Crimson also cut back on certain fan service elements, as a minumum I recall all the clothing break scenes were identical .

I just got Senran Kagura 2 some days ago. It was really hard to find this game here in Europe because it had a very limited run. Havn't played much of it yet, but it plays really well, especially compared to the first 3DS game.

I didn't like Deep Crimson as much as Shinovi/Estival Versus on the Vita but it was still a pretty decent Senran Kagura game on the 3ds.

Well, I played both games on Citra emulator and I honestly enjoyed both, just hated SKB Haruka's moveset coz it was without the robot and her specials suck. Story was okay, but was actually the deepest in deep crimson (forgive the pun) and I loved the back stories. It was just missing the Shinobi love hearts, the part I love the most from the Senran Kagura Series coz of the illustrations and character building

Not the worst in fact the best because the sound track is the best of any of the Senren kagura games. Plus the best part it is uncensored.

How come no one ever talks about the REAL first 3DS game in the Senran Kagura series, Shoujotachi No Shinei (Portrait of Girls)? Everyone talks about Burst and Deep Crimson, but there is little to no info online about Portrait of Girls. Would love to see/hear your take on this rare title.

The 3DS games need to be remade on the Switch (I'm sure they could find a way to omit the least used of the screens) without any content being cut on the localization.

What I hate in the beat m all senra kagura games is the target look on since your character don't attack the target and some times the camera is center in you and not in the enemy position, I like more the 3DS since are more simple and give me nostalgia of the times I play Doble Dragon games, also 2 Shinku is a good game but the producer try to make it look like the pspvita (thats not a bad thin) games but it continues with the target issue, but having two playable characters give more fun to the game, also it have the only thing I never thought it will be in an senran kagura series male strip in combat make it an gender equality and I like it to see Ikagura brother and the main villain get damage fan service and make the similar pose like the other gals. But still, I recommend this game since is very fun to play.

I got the first Burst game after I played Shinovi Versus, and I liked Burst better, actually. It was less fanservicy, unfortunately (European release...) but the game was harder and more rewarding. Maybe people like it less because they can't play it one-handed quite as comfortably? ;P

I played both burst and deep crimson and I did the Yoma dungeon with I still prefer shinovi versus and estival versus because of the gameplay and more content

They should make a remake or a remaster for this game

I think Peach Beach Splash is the worst SK game because it’s more reading and load screens than actual gameplay because the levels are mostly 40-90 seconds long and the story is pretty stupid. Yes it’s entertaining but it lacked the quality a charm of the previous games. I do find the gameplay enjoyable but again the levels end before then even begin and even playing on hard the game is too easy. The multiplayer is pretty fun but good luck trying to get it to work. On the PS4 I have to deal with idiots constantly spamming a group chat just so I can find people to play online with and to make it even worse the game has very strict skill based matchmaking so you can’t even play with everyone. Beginners and master ranks can barely find people to match-make with and even if you get a full lobby at least 2 people disconnect every time and the lag is often so awful it’s unplayable. And on top of all that there are over 120 add ons that add up to around $300. I don’t think it’s a bad game and I even got the platinum trophy for it but it’s half-assed and unpolished compared to other games in the series. Not to mention the FPS drops on both PS4 and PS4 Pro (I haven’t played the PC version so no comment on that) but on the bright side the game seems to be 4K on the PS4 Pro and it looks really sharp on a 4K TV and the VR mode is also quite interesting but it’s not as fun as you may think.

Estivel versus is where I thought the series was getting crappier and stale. Peach beach splash is a good change. Not sure if I want to play the remake. I kind of don't want 2 to get a remake unless they implement everything from the 3ds version.

I love the Senran Kagura games but my only one nitpick is that all the girls, except for a very few, have the same damn breast size. I have nothing against big boobs but I do like variety lol. Good video though.

I'm gonna flip out because Deep Crimson is one of my favorite 3DS games of all time, but damn did the series went downhill after that, with weird pinball, cooking/rhythm and VR like dating sim, it's like KT ditching DOA6 in favor of DOAX Venus Vacation, and I'm not against fan service, I'm against to have a decent game franchise and just focus in the fan service part just to make a quick cash from horny weebs.

I don't know if anyone pointed it out already, I don't see it but feels to me like you said Asuka, Homura and Haruka's names wrong in a way that actually bothers me, its a nitpick but it feels like you were trying to force a japanese accent too much for them, but thats just me As for the games themselves i have not tried the 3ds games yet but I am not sure I care too, though from the gameplay it is cool to see one of the levels was on top of a train that is a cool set piece
