For General Michael Hayden, playing to the edge means playing so close to the line that you get chalk dust on your cleats. The only person to ever helm both CIA and NSA, at a time of heinous new threats and wrenching change, he believes that to play back you may protect yourself, but you will be less successful in protecting America.
Hayden shares how this principle guided him through some of the most telling events in the history of American national security in his new book, Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror.

I've read Hayden's book and have watched dozens of these types of videos. I really do appreciate this man's service and I thoroughly enjoy his lectures.

One of the great minds & speakers. He says it like it is. I’ve always liked his use of metaphors too. Thank you for your service.

Nice to hear a mention of Bletchley Park, I've been producing a podcast for them for more than 4 years now. It's been my honour to interview more than 50 of the WW2 Staff of GC&CS.

That's cool! Have you been allowed, or is it possible/is there anything left worth it, to take a tour around Bletchley itself?

Brilliant book, I recommend it for everyone.....it helps in corporate leadership....as Gen Hayden explains the aspects of dealing with leadership and changes in leadership...and how to manage ideological conflicts (yours and your CEO) 1:03:05 Authorized by *TWO* Presidents... _'215 Program'_ was in the context Gen Hayden's referencing was part pf the *Patriot Act of 2001* so the other POTUS ain't Clinton.... so how could it be politically motivated if both Bush and Obama authorized it? _you may wonder_ the simple answer is*PUBLIC BACKLASH* , which was loud and defending 215 was political poison. However, its more complicated. If you believe this still hold true _"government of the people by the people_ *for the people"* then you will realize _'politically motivated'_ is a synonym for the *will of the people* . As political motivation is driven by the probability for re-election and that probability is wholly determined *"by the people"* Therefore, before you point fingers at any administration, look in the mirror and remember, they are only doing what they are doing as they feel, their actions will ensure your vote and their job security. ---SIDEBAR - Unrelated to the subject of Gen Hayden presentation, but in reference to one immaterial phrasing he used 11:55 I still can't figure out how the label _'Anglo_Saxon'_ is still used... when in reality it should be Anglo-Norman if anything...and more accurately Anglo-Norman-Viking lol The Norman cultural impact makes up majority of the similarities...except for religion...which only came about in the mind 1500's cause fata55 Henry VIII wanted a divorce and the catholic Church thought it was bigger than the King....later found out in the most prejudiced way they were wrong....lol But that is nothing....the buildings, language, political structure ...none of it anglo-saxon...... angles and saxon impact was ejected with prejudice by William the Conqueror DNA of UK is too much of a soup to a definitive reading...there are studies out there...but unless you know UK history of invasion and understand the statistical issues with extrapolation (especially in the context of population distribution & migration) and the inaccuracies associated with genealogical DNA tests / Y chromosome testing / Mitochondrial DNA testing / single nucleotide polymorphism testing then *DO NOT* bother relying on studies published in this field...peer-reviewed or not....as in science.... peer-review doesn't mean sh88....its majority peer-consensus that matters....and that this studies *DO NOT* have
