Very cool examples of how the underpainting can make the pastel colors & values pop!

Brilliant. Hannah's music is so relaxing and beautiful. It was distorting a little which is a shame but l love this type of music.

It always makes me crazy to see you working with those big thick pastels. I'm sure you could use pencils or shards if you wanted so I figured it must be part of your process. I think in the end it gives your work a raw quality and lets the pastel colors work themselves out as you go. Beautiful work - I enjoy your videos a lot.

I really enjoyed painting along with you. Thanks for the inspiration! I am new to using gouache and was excited to see pastel used with it. Are used Conte Crayons … My favorite pastel

Beautiful painting ma'm.Take the tape off at 45' angle and it will not tear the paper.

Thank you so much for this amazing video tutorial! I am a total beginner to painting but I'm already loving trying different mediums. I do not have soft pastels because I knew nothing about pastels before randomly buying oil pastels. Can I do these same technique with oil pastels on top of gouache? Also, is the gesso essential for oil pastels? I would love to hear back on how I could create such beautiful impressionist paintings with what I currently have!

Having done this in a sketchbook, do you fix the pages after you are finished? I like the possibilities a sketchbook provides, as well as the portability for plein air studies.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 5 лет назад
romaisblooming That’s a really great question and I typically use sheets of glassine in between the pages if I do sketches and pastel. I often will put a small piece of tape somewhere to adhere it so that it doesn’t move much or smudge.

I use some music that RU-vid provides so I don't have to worry about copyright issues. I'm so sorry..... can't remember the name to this song.

Awesome as always.😍😊. I usually love to work on a medium grain canvas.... should the same procedure be used there too? Can soft pastels be used in the later stages of an gouche/ acrylic painting?
@jayashreeshenoy1166
@jayashreeshenoy1166 5 лет назад
Another humble request....can u please use a bigger size paper( for at least one of the four) so that we can see what you are doing.... better. Watching videos on our mobile creates probs too but most of the time we have no other options.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 5 лет назад
@@jayashreeshenoy1166 I haven't had much success in using pastels on any type of canvas. While you can use pastels on top of gouache or acrylic paintings, I still don't think canvas would be the best surface. Also, with pastels, you have to be more careful with the final .... making sure to frame under glass. That's a great suggestion about painting larger. I agree about how small things are when looking at our phones. I have a function on my camera (for filming) that allows me to zoom in 3x's. That may be a solution to make the process more visible. ;) Thanks for your suggestion!

Does this work with canvas paper?

I think violin is better suitable for background music. The piano music not very good and is a distraction.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 5 лет назад
Gina TexasGirl Thanks for that suggestion. I happen to love violin music, but I can’t find much of it on the RU-vid audio library. They are pretty strict about what music you can use.

Comment: one of the freedoms; not only here in the USA, but in the world... and that is choice/speech. Thumbs down show me your time was limited and you moved on. [I'll agree with you that the artist created a mess and it appeared to be going nowhere.] Lets just stop and think for a moment about your world of uniformity. I bet in many cases in your work, you are restricted from one of the most important attributes of a true Artist'... 'creativity' This artist will stain the paper with color; then from it, (mess 👎) emerges a wonderful piece. My question to you is, did the artist randomly spill paint with no idea, or was there a plain? As a former architectural draftsman, i will stand by an order of thing, for as the Bible teaches us that Solomon's Temple was built before the first stone was laid.

Well said brother. I'm assuming you may have been responding to a comment that was deleted. I know there have been some "thumbs down" to this video, but those never discourage me. Thanks for your beautiful defense of art :)
