I think the original PlayStation is one of the best values in retro gaming today. Here's a crash course in the hardware so you know what to look for if you go shopping for one.

The VCD variant, the Devkit versions or the Net Yaroze are cooler IMO. I guess you could buy spares for parts.

The CD drives in all Playstations are drop in swappable, meaning with little modification, a PSone drive can fit in a model 1 Playstation. Thats how I have a working original model

TGOTR not really if you still have your plastic piece from the old laser and swapped it out it’ll work and doesn’t mess up the cosmetic look of the system

After swapping the optical drive from your PSone into your model 1 Playststion, how long did the drive last, I hear that the reason why optical drives warp was because its placed to the top left next to the internal power supply and the heat from the power supply caused the warping of the optical drive.

A good video suggestion in my book would be to do a cleaning and refurbishing video on the PSone. Your video on the original Playstation is great and I think the world could do with a good quality teardown video of the SCPH-101.

Or you can buy a PS2, it plays PSX and PS2 games, and you will save a lot of money and space of getting 2 consoles. Not to mention PS2 memory cards hold a lot more storage if I am not mistaken.

+Rashid Al-Khayal (Game92Collector) I went for a PS2, too. And I wish there were more 2D platformers like Castlevania - Symphony of the Night for the PS1, because those early 3D platformers have aged quite badly graphic wise.

just bought back recently the SCPH 7501 model I first owned back in early 1998 and so far its easily the best way (at least for me anyway) to play PS1 games doing it even better than my fat/slim PS2 and white slim PS3. reads discs way better than later playstation consoles and was the last one to have the Parallel I/O out for using a gameshark (dont use one to play through FF7 it triggers a game breaking glitch on Disc 2 that ruins your save file), so happy I finally found another SCPH 7501 that actually works and isn't broken/beaten up beyond repair like the last 2 times I attempted getting my PS1 back.

great video. saw second revision with cables, controller Gran turismo and another game go for $2.50 at an auction yesterday. no demand for ps1 so easy to get cheap.

Hey, I got a OG playstation and 50 games, I love it! About 2000, I had a N64, I got bored with it, I wanted a playstation. I had a PS Classic, ok it was a letdown, so I ordered a playstation from ebay, and 50 games, and damn it's awesome!

region lock doesn't stand a chance if you install a modchip on the console I have an American ps1 and it can play Japanese and European games with no problems but you'll need a PAL to NTSC software switch because your TV still is region locked

TVs are not region locked. Earlier CRT TVs just didn't support the video signal of the other reigion's consoles but later CRT TVs, and basically all LCD TVs, support all video signals and will work just fine with a console from any region.

I can never wrap around the difference between PAL and NTSC in person. All I know is when we try to output PAL on our TV, we just get a monochrome display. I’m from an NTSC region.

Ah the 'ol PlayStation 1, great memories there! I have a mod chipped SCPH 5501 model sitting in the other room right now, hooked up and ready to play any PlayStation game ever made and then some.

I'd say the 5000 / 7000 models are the best if you don't care about the dedicated composite ports and want a good optical drive. However they are extremely easy to replace if you have an original unit.

I have at home all models except the original one. I must say that also the revisions still have problems with the laser after a while and require to be played upside down which only temporarily solves the problem. My PS One is for the time being proving the most reliable of the lot.

I own two of the original playstation the one without the rca cable. Kinda sad when both the laser lens stopped working when I was still young. Always wanted to fix those two.

My dad and I found his ps1 at my grandparents and we kept it their to play one, so then later i went to a flea market and i got another ps1 with the power plug and an original controller to play at our house for $15 bucks not to bad of a deal

Great video as always, and one that particularly interests me as the PSX and PS2 are the only two big retroconsoles absent in my collection. Any advise on how to test the reliability on the laser lenses?, it would suck to buy one with a faulty laser.

@Brokenman TV: I'm tired of giving that explanation but here it goes again. Back in '95-'96 the Super Nintendo was refered as the SNES, the Genesis was... well, the Genesis, the Nintendo 64 was the N64 and the Playstation was refered as the PSX, that name stuck in the back of our minds back then and you can see it on older reviews like on Gamepro magazines, the modified version of the PS2 wasn't even a real thing until well into the 2000's. Still is a matter of preference how you call it.

Inded, the origianl PlayStation being called the "PSX" comes from "PlayStation eXperiment" which was apparently the codename for the original PlayStation.

Also, GameStop still sells a few PS1 hard copies of games on their website, or did last I checked. (I was surprised.)

Sad part is most games now are up to $200 or more if they are really rare. I wish I bought a PS one in 2015 and a stack of games back then because they are getting higher on price if you start collecting now. Especially the PS5 shortage problem. Im seeing sometimes a PSone with an LCD screen on eBay for $300 to $2,500 its getting ridiculous. I wish I never sold my original PS1 from 1997 to my sister in 2000 to get my Dreamcast with all my games.

I had an original that still played just fine up until I sold it. Then again, it was refurbished when I bought it so this might mean that the plastic parts were replaced by metal ones.

I have the first revision of the ps1 with the rca outputs, but surely enough the laser assembly crapped out somewhere in the mid 2000s. Now it only works if i play with it turned upside down, but i don't really consider that a long term solution :P I found a pdf some years ago with a guide to fix the wear on the laser guide rails, but if that doesn't work. Does anybody know where i can get a new laser assembly or entire cd motor/laser unit? I have the PAL version. don't know if the lasers are any different between the NTSC/PAL/whatever versions.

Internetspaceships A lot of replacement lasers I've seen online are chear Chinese ones that don't work at all well. You might just want to get a PSone and take the laser out of that. Also, to stop that laser crapping out, maybe fit your console with a heatsink.

Eh, with the small PSOne, I can’t finish Saga Frontier 2. There are system hangs just before the Ice Megalith ends as well as just before the game ends. With some trickery on how the episodes are tackled, you could bypass the former, but the latter is a bummer as you miss out on New Game+. I’ve mentioned this to someone who also played the game, but on a big box model, and he says he encountered no problems there.

Interesting, but the Playstation 2 and 3 both play the PSX games, so unless you're a collector or nostalgic I'm not sure why you'd buy one of these instead, or in addition to. (Although if you can pick one up for cheap, why not I guess ;) )

You've obviously never come across the Dual Analog controller, which came out in 1997, which doesn't have vibration but does have more comfortable analog sticks and a flight stick mode for playing games that supported by the analog joystick, such as Descent and Cyberia.

Yeah i get your point but the only reason theyre so cheap and unwanted is because the PS2 and PS3 and any PS1 emulator can play its games better

if you play ps1 driving games on a ps2 or ps3, the controller changes the sensitivity in a detrimental way. ps3 also causes noise issues on lots of games.
