PlayStation's Concord looks dead on arrival with alarmingly low open beta player numbers

Dead On Arrival is a compliment, Concord is more Dead On Announcement. I immediately lost what little interest I had in the game as soon as it was shown that it was more 5v5 multiplayer slop.

The playable characters look like they were designed by a boardroom.

And Nothing of Value was lost.

I genuinely had no idea this game even exists. And now that I know what it is, I absolutely do not care.

Executives will see this and blame the failure on Concord not being an existing IP

You know whats also $40? Shadow of the Erdtree. 5 million copies in 3 days.

So right now, not even an hour after this video was posted, the 24 hour peak of Powerwash Simulator is 4,119 and Stardew Valley is at 126,912. PWS is an incredibly good, but extremely niche game, and Stardew Valley is 8 years old.

Someone pointed out during my stream, Lennox (Green Lizard Dude) looks almost identical to Yondu (Blue guy) from Guardians of the Galaxy. Now I can't unsee it.

Based on the high quality of the cinematics it's not hard to argue they thought this game was going to be a success.

I was interested in the CG trailer... then they said "Concord is a 5v5 first person shooter" I immediately tuned out

Hmm, do I want to play a half complete game that I need to pay £15 to £30 per item for to complete the game, quarterly battlepasses, boosters and loot boxes, costing me thousands of pounds over all or do I want to pay rent, eat and cloth myself and pay for basic utilities? It's so hard to decide.

SONY managed to make the most bland, generic and anti rule 34 game I've ever seen.

12 more live-service games?! How much time do they think people actually have? Or money?!

I'm so happy to hear of another live service failure. Always good to hear. Concord just looks like a game developed in a boardroom filled with people who never played a videogame. The characters are the lamest looking "heros" I've seen.

Concord is a $40 live service game that has been influenced by DEI activists, and it has in-game shop which sells the usual $20-$30 cosmetic skins and Battle Pass. Some people might adore that type of game, but I'll rather invest my limited time and money elsewhere, where the companies appreciate me as a customer and don't view me as piggy bank.

And the developers deflected audience feedback as "white noise". They should eat a big slice of humble pie.

I'm too busy replaying classics like Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 enhanced editions and working through my backlog of awesome game and replaying SNES roms to even entertain the thought of playing a live service game.

It's odd you'd ignore mentioning one of the main criticisms it has, which is obviously the awful character designs.

Remember Jim Ryan said they were aware that the live service games they are making could very well be failures. This was expected to happen to some of their projects, they have planned for this type of situation.

Trying to market a game to an audience that doesn't exist is probably a bad idea.

Never even heard of the game before this, and when I heard the title, I thought it was a flight simulator.

I imagine this was initially planned for a free to play launch but Sony execs saw the runaway success of Helldivers 2 at $40 and figured they could risk it again without any understanding that Helldivers was a breath of fresh air and this is a generic turd you can find 100 clones of in every free to play library

My main issue with Concord wasn't necessarily that it was another hero shooter. My issue was that that it was another hero shooter that didn't really do anything new for the genre while being $40 while the competition is F2P. This is on top of the PS Plus subscription needed to play while F2P games don't require it.

You gotta keep in mind that all these games now also require a PSN account, which is unavailable in the vast majority of countries in the world. So not only so they try to compete with other big games in the genre but they also just offer their game to a smaller potential customer-base on PC. The restrictions on availability are also one of several reasons Helldivers took quite the nosedive in concurrent players.

Three terms that will put me off a game 'multiplayer', 'looter shooter' 'soulslike'. This game seems to hit two out of three.

There are hundreds of dollars worth of unused money I am willing to spend on video games every year, but I never get to spend it as they keep pumping out live service slop instead of making good games, so I just keep playing old games. This has been a problem for almost a decade.

To be fair, Concord looks to be a hero shooter in the veins of Overwatch and TF2. That market is saturated. What Sony should do, is a good, old fashioned 3/4 isometric beat'em-up like the old school Ninja Turtles and X-Men games. Something NOT saturating the market.

Let's be honest, the characters look like absolute shit. That alone is enough to put off anyone from even trying it.

It's impressive that they thought they'd be able to even compete against other live service games while charging 40$. Even overwatch 1 got critized for being 40$ on release, and that game had double the characters than concord.

Truth is nobody wants this to survive. Its quite a reality check for sony.

Honestly I'm glad this is happening. I understand that putting out any game that isn't a live service is scary because of how much money games need to make back to turn a profit but putting out too much of any one genre isn't going to help. Sony caught lightning in a bottle with Helldiver's 2 but that success can't be artificially replicated. As scary as it might be, risky as it might be, the best thing Sony can do is just let their developers do what they do best. Make some great single player action games. Live Services aren't working anyway so you might as well return to a formula that you already know works. No it's not going to make you Fortnite money but you were never going to make that kind of money anyway, just stick to what you know you can do.

Another title that I'm looking forward to seeing get covered on Nerdslayer's Death Of A Game series in the future.
