During “Plead the Fifth,” Cyndi Lauper responds to Lionel Richie saying it was a mistake to choose her over Madonna for We Are the World by agreeing that it was the wrong move not having Madonna on the song. She discusses fighting with the producer of the Girls Just Want to Have Fun movie and having a change of heart after meeting Helen Hunt. Lastly, Cyndi is asked who Yoko Ono’s least favorite Beatle was. But will she plead the fifth?

Madonna wasn't invited to record the song. Even La Toya and Sheila E ended up in the video somehow. Quincy Jones thought Madonna was an absolute flash in the pan at the time, but later admitted that her “career outlasted almost anyone’s in the room.”

Back in the 1980s at the height of her fame, a friend of mine saw her in Manhattan. A group of kids screamed "Yo, Cyndi Lauper!" And she screamed back "YO KIDS!" LOL Love this lady.

Albums aren’t a useful metric when it comes to rating the career of someone like Cyndi Lauper. Since she was no longer in the sphere of the charts she has done other very successful work, and indeed has never actually stopped working. Which given that she’s in her 70s I would say is super successful. The pop charts aren’t the measure of an artist. That’s like saying Da Vinci hasn’t had a hit painting for a while. 😂

Many of Madonna songs have not stood the test of time. Cyndi wrote and interpreted songs that will always be remembered. Cyndi has a huge catalogue of songs. A lot are classics that should of gotten airplay. Cyndi decided to go a on different path. Sony wanted her to sipop She will always be famous imo. She has that certain something that millions of people are still drawn too. Cyndi Hated being famous. The truth is she still loved and admired for her timeless music. She is a national treasure

Steve is a big fan of Cyndi's. He was at Kinky Boots in 2013, and there's a Pic of them together. There were so many stars at her show. I remember seeing Glenn Close, Liza, Joan Rivers, rip, Brooke Shields at the premiere... Michelle Obama with both of her daughters. Gladys Knight, Sting, Robert Deniro and his wife...many stars love Cyndi.

Andy made a big gaff with that one. If you listen closely Cyndi in her own Cyndi way, said that she should have been invited. Very different from what Andy implied and completely screwed up on. I only hear Cyndi diss a singer one time ...when Jessica Simpson and her dad took credit for the 4 octave note at the Divas concert in 2004, when in fact it was Cyndi who hit the high note, but Jessica and her dad made sure the camera was on her, instead of Cyndi. It's on the youtube WWHL aftershow from 2013. Cyndi was infuriated

Andy goofed. Lionel always wanted Cyndi to sing on We are the World. Watch the Netflix special. It was Kimmel who coaxed Lionel into saying it was a mistake not to invite Madonna. Lionel in fact literally begged Cyndi not to pass up the recording that night. Her boyfriend/manager didn't want her to sing on it cause he thought it wasn't going to be a hit. Lionel convinced Cyndi to do it...end of story

Her part was amazing and one of the biggest highlights of the song. Personally, I think Lionel Richie can stop talking about it so much. I think he takes way too much credit for writing the song anyhow. Look up Michael’s demo on RU-vid. The meat and bones of the song were there before Richie ever touched it. Not sure why that question goes to Cyndi? Would you ask it to the male leads on the song? the both should have sang on it, but Madonna is in a totally different range than Cyndi Lauper. From a skill and proficiency standpoint Madonna isn't half the singer that Cyndi is, Madonna could not have sand her part in a million years.

Lionel did NOT say they should have chosen Madonna over Cyndi. He said they should have asked Madonna to do the song. Talk about twisting someone’s words. Honestly, though, what else is he supposed to say??? Madonna simply would not have had a solo part with that bunch of best-in-the-biz vocalists. She would be have relegated to the choir, which STILL had killer singers in it.

I understand what you’re saying, but as Madonna is the biggest selling female singer in the world to this day, I’d argue that her voice, however you characterize it in comparison to the best-in biz vocalists you mention, is also worthy of the same. Besides, did you sit through the entire sessions of Huey’s, Bob Dylan’s and Cyndi’s vocal takes? They’re all great artists in their own right, but there were some real duds in there.

"Great voices" and everyone out of tune, rehearsing the same 5 second segment 30 times because they couldn't do it right (Cyndi Lauper the worst of all), everyone's singing was totally horrible. Madonna could have participated perfectly. Stop complimenting everyone. Madonna is the only one who continues in her career, and with great success. RESPECT.

Ok Madonna die-hards, I love me some Madonna too. Got all the albums. Great artist. she’s not a singer’s singer. There are many pop artists just like this and that’s ok. That was an elite bunch in the solo spots. Cyndi being one of them. Just because they all had to work on their parts (that they just got that night, btw) doesn’t make them “duds.” The final product turned out great.

Taylor Swift is a Multi Billionaire. She is the biggest female star on the planet. The most awarded in the history of music. She is friends w/Cyndi and had appeared at Cyndi's yearly Christmas Shows for charity twice. Madonna probably has a pic of Taylor, she uses as a dart board. I guarantee it.

Lionel Richie who helped put the thing together has already said they all regret not asking Madonna. That was the one biggest regret. Madonna wasn’t quite at super stardom yet. No one suspected she’d last. So they’re all basically kicking themselves. I don’t know that Lionel Richie said Madonna instead of Cyndi Lauper. He just said they regret not asking Madonna and that it was a big mistake and they hope she can forgive them.

Imho Cyndi’s part completed We Are The World’s America’s (and 80s) identity. Everyone else just sang in that song whilst Cyndi not only sang but left her trademark.
