Pleb Tier: Splinter Cell Conviction Review (2020)

Splinter Cell: Conviction is the kind of game you get when you want to continue a series but refuse to retire your main character, in order to appease fans you have so little confidence will make the game sell well enough that you have to water down the mechanics and pander to as many seventh generation console tropes as can fit without bursting the bubble outright. Splinter Cell deserves better, stealth games definitely deserve better.

I don't think they were patronizing the player about stealth. Tutorials in game are usually so contrived it's pretty tedious so this game takes an opportunity to build the character between Fisher and his daughter as well as diegetically getting across the tutorial information without seeming forced and unnatural.
@GreyTide
@GreyTide 3 года назад
Yes. Giving players the understanding of how much his daughter means to him while also conveying important gameplay concepts serves mechanics and the narrative, even if it feels like the tone with which he talks to his daughter is patronizing to the player.

Conviction well and truly broke everything I loved about Splinter Cell. Through it all, the exciting part of Splinter Cell, for me, was that you could use stealth and guile to avoid using brute force and lethality. And for me, that defined the entire game from the beginning. To the point where succeeding by killing felt no different from failing. Then along comes Conviction, where you murder everyone you touch. There is no way to not kill people. Even if you sneak up and grab them, you still snap their necks and pump bullets into them. You are ...just a killing machine, apparently. It feels strange to say it, but for me, that completely destroyed the entire game.

It truly makes me sad that the Stealth genre never got the love it truly deserved. We got a handful of good stealth games back in the day and then they all got turned into the same old mediocre action/shooter games. There was and still is an easy solution for Splinter Cells future. Just simply make it a prequel, show the beginning of Sam or place the next games between the original trilogy games or like you said just give new characters. I don't mind having new characters, as long as they sound, act, and look like Tom Clancy would have made them. But sadly Ubisoft has turned the Tom Clancy trademark into some hipster social media inspired nonsense.

At least Kojima tried making a more mechanically rich stealth game with MGS 5 after 4 was only like...30% stealth game and let you go guns blazing for literally all of it with little drawbacks. Of course that's kind of a moot point when MGS 5 gave you so many options that stealth was just that, an option. Why sneak through a base when I could take out every guard from a mile away with a silenced armor piercing sniper rifle? Nice that one of big names in the genre actually made a very deep stealth friendly system in an otherwise sandbox game after going borderline full action. Peace Walker too, both were very nice returns to the stealth but both also made it optional so kind of a best of both worlds I guess? You want to be loud and dumb? Go ahead. You want to be a ghost who leaves no trace? Go ahead and get much greater rewards for it, as well as avoiding difficult fights. Like in PW where you had boss fights against tanks escorted by troops. But it was entirely possible to do those in total stealth, kidnapping each soldier one by one and then disabling the tank for capture without being spotted rather than actually doing the boss fight. With major rewards for doing so. Kojima might've been onto something with the level of choice and heavily rewarding stealth but it was still making stealth an option instead of the focus, which is gonna be pretty subjective I guess.

Michael Ironside has that buttery voice and then Sam looks like Nate Drake. If this was a more modern game, they'd digitally scan Ironside's face in or something. The voice here when he's explaining the light to his daughter, I had to double check it wasn't a narrator. Not sure why he fit Sam so good in the older games. Maybe just nostalgia bias, or Ironside was younger?
@GreyTide
@GreyTide 3 года назад
An Elite NSA agent like Sam would age well. I get the impression he takes good care of himself, unlike the beta Fisher design or his appearance in Black List. This guy in Rainbow Six Seige is Sam Fisher in loadout and animations alone. The design is silly. Doesn't look like Sam. Looks like some guy LARPing as Elder Maxium from Fallout 4.
@Lazypackmule
@Lazypackmule 3 года назад
I don't view the scene with Sam's daughter at the beginning as just being a patronizing tutorial, it's a pretty cute scene with a relevant parental lesson that you could easily believe someone like Sam would give. Well, outside of the really specific and cringeworthy detail about shooting down chandeliers, anyway Best part of the game is easily the ending of the co-op campaign, for such a boring game I wasn't expecting something so cool and unique, as short lived as it is- only downside is it wasn't done in a better stealth game

@pitchblackgrue

I actually liked that Sam Fisher only kills in this game, since if you think about it there are very few ways to be stealthy in the way that someone like Snake or Fisher would be and not kill guards unless you just avoided interacting with them entirely. Choking someone out only works for as long as you choke them and could cause permanent brain damage. Same with knocks to the head or neck. And tranquilizers also would have the same issues of variability based on guards weight and tolerance to the drugs inside which is probably some mix of benzos and opiates. I'm kind of sick of the expectation in stealth games that you must be non-lethal because in reality that's not really an option.
@filipeamaral216
@filipeamaral216 3 года назад
Yes, that's something I really get annoyed at in stealth games. This reviewer dronning about Sam being violent is tiresome. Sam is out of the Echelon's leach and avenging his daughter, of the course the guy is gonna be a killing machine (and I welcome this decision in this game). Since younger players get empathetic with the enemies (even if they are Nazis) people started making the false equivalence of equating "stealth" with "non-lethal". I remember being like that with Commandos as a kid, and they added cuffs in the expansion and knock out punches in the second game so you wouldn't kill enemy soldiers - in a war! Most of the time "non-lethal" is definitely lethal or doesn't help you going unnoticed at all - since that's another excuse: "Oh, you can't leave bodies because that's evidence". Yeah, the guys waking up with darts on their heads do not count as evidence, nor does the "knocked out" body left 2h in the freezer. At some point people will know they got infiltrated, what matters is whether you already exfiltrated or not. A document missing will be noticed at some point, but will they be able to pin down who stole them? Or will they be able to do anything about it? A guard waking up on the floor (sometimes missing his weapon) will notice that's enemy action. One game that did it right was Death to Spies (a Russian Hitman game), where you can kill a certain amount of enemies and not impact your score. Hitman: Blood Money did that in style by adding accidents (something Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory sorely lacked).
@pitchblackgrue
@pitchblackgrue 3 года назад
@@filipeamaral216 See I can only see a "non-lethal" stealth playthrough to include not interacting with the enemies in any sense, don't knock them out, nothing. MGSV had a special title for this if you left no evidence.

Metal Gear Solid 2 did the radio thing pretty well. The guards in that would all routinely radio in status reports, and if they failed to do so for any reason their commander would get pissy then send in a search team to try and figure out what happened. And they'd actually look around as a team too, even going so far as to strategically clear room by room SWAT style if they didn't like what they found. If you did anything to interrupt an enemy mid radio broadcast, that would also result in a search team. This was all linked to the alert system too. In 2 it didn't matter so much if an enemy spotted you, what mattered was whether or not they managed to call it in. If they saw you, but couldn't call it in, then no other guards in the area would be aware of you and no backup was coming from outside. It didn't even register as an alert in your end game score unless they called it in, so intercepting radio calls (or jamming/destroying radios outright) was always a viable strategy. It was honestly one of the most underrated AI mechanics in that game imo, and as far as I know it's the only game to have done it.

Yeah, not to beat a dead horse, but Splinter Cell was at its best when a highly skilled, technologically sophisticated special forces operator ghosted his way through open and interesting areas to achieve halfway realistic goals in plots revolving around halfway realistic military intrigue, not when Sam Fisher the Destroyer of Worlds murdered his way through loads of goons on a schlocky, B-movie quest for revenge. I remember how I would creep around in Chaos Theory and contrast that to the recent games, and it definitely feels like something of value was lost along the way.

4 years late to the vid. On the topic of the whole Lambert/Sarah thing, it makes more sense with the context of the previous game, but it also directly contradicts the established characterisation and motives of the previous game. In Double Agent, Sam had been turning down jobs that he considered too dangerous even for him because he didn't want Sarah to be an orphan. So when a job comes up that Lambert needs Sam for and Sam says no, Lambert decides that for the good of the country, Sam needs to be removed from his daughter so he no longer has a reason to deny suicide missions. So with the context of that job, the whole "not manipulating Sam" motivation makes sense... again, for THAT job specifically... but it's also just wrong and a bad reason to take the risk of alienating your best agent, and also it's just not why he did it.

Respectfully disagree, but it’s all a matter of taste. This game is leagues better than Double Agent, not so much so than Blacklist (because the level design is superior there) and nothing can beat chaos theory at this point, while 1 and 2 are relics of their time, still great games but their age greatly shows now. Maybe I’m just too fond of this game because Sam Fisher went through a more dramatic change in terms of character and that it’s Michael’s last time voicing Sam Fisher in a mainstream Splinter Cell game. And after what...8 years at this point I’m convinced we aren’t getting another entry...They’re okay with churning out Assassins Creed year after year but no desire to innovate the stealth genre any further (well I’d hope they went back to full stealth because Blacklist was still to action oriented for my liking)

For me, a great game, a horrific splinter cell game, countless hours playing the solo/coop mode to perfect runs, learning patrols, hugely enjoyable, there was so much fun to be had when playing with "hit and run" style and messing around with the enemies which on the highest difficulty is a great challenge. The campaign is serviceable, characters are forgettable, ambients change a lot but the color palette is black and white most of the time unless you have a milk shake of gray matter making weight over your shoulders but nonetheless a waste of what could have been a nice looking game. Fight me if you want but it is, and i repeat, a great game but a horrific splinter cell game.

The last level dropped the ball so hard that I finally stopped caring about playing this "stealth game" in any kind of stealthy manner. The ending sequence also couldn't help but overdose on stupid plot twists. The story had already ended with Double Agent. Sam bails in each ending, which is not triumphant but fitting. Conviction's ending is just a retread of that. The only nice thing about it is that Sam gets his daughter back. I was wary of Blacklist when it got announced. Its trailer turned me off hard. Steam reviews confirmed my dire expectations. However, I would enjoy watching a video of you taking it apart.

This game was such a giant pile of trash, it's not Splinter cell in any way, shape or form. Ubisoft had already lost all their good talent by this point and were just shoveling garbage out because they knew people who loved original Splinter Cell games, and the OG Assassins Creed games would buy it, hoping their would be a return to form. Unfortunately Ubisoft never got good again, and now they are just a big of a blight on gaming as EA.

They don't blend well. They should have just let Conviction be the finally for the character, if not the series.
