Hi Jessica, I am a professional artist in England. I just wanted to let you know we really love your enthusiastic delivery style and refreshingly friendly, totally inclusive approach to plein air painting. I sometimes fit out my mountain cycle with panniers plus a small back-back with flask, food, water and inclement weather gear etc. I like the combination of a cycling/hiking trip and creating a small plein air souvenir of the day. Also, digital cameras can, as you know, 'reduce' down the perspective so when you get back to the studio and look at your photographic reference you may be forgiven for thinking 'wow! I got that background hill really wrong!' You didn't, it's the camera lens. So, apart from 'zooming in to get a more accurate memo, your great tip of making a small reference sketch would help out there and I even leave myself little future notes to act as a memory aid for back in the studio. It's a bit of a weight, but, I take an iPad in a durable waterproof case and shoot some film of the scene, or me painting it. I also photograph the same scene being painted then back in the studio you can use this as a reference by mounting it on a clip placed atop a musicians mic stand where your reference is like a slide, back lit and adjustable. Thank You again, Jessica you are a true ambassador to the art. Keep up the good work. Stephen Lewis Gilmore ('Stevie')

One thing that came to mind is what do you have your camera set up on? Whatever it is it seems it can cope with any weather
@JessicaHenry
@JessicaHenry 7 лет назад
Hi Andrew, I use another tripod. Sometimes I just use a panel holder/ artist easel. One thing I learned about filming in 28 degree cold, is to tape a hand warmer to the back of the phone and cover the back of your phone because a full battery will die in about 20 minutes in the cold. However- I just bought a Go Pro- and have yet to experiment with it, but I hear they're pretty hardy. (I'm going to try the ever attractive head strap!) :)

Hi Jessica! Love your videos. I am in the market for a plein air easel (quicker set up than my French easel)...I have seen you use both the Coulter and the Open M Easels. Which do you prefer for which situations? Thank you!
@JessicaHenry
@JessicaHenry 6 лет назад
Thanks Angela, I prefer the Open M, because I like having the mixing area up in my line of vision, and its at about the same value plane as my canvas, and its easier when filming, for the camera to get the palette and painting together. And if that wasn't enough, it is lighter than the Coulter easel, but only by a bit. The Open M weighs 1.25 lbs! When you're backpacking everything, it all matters.

Do you condition them? Thank you for all of your wonderful videos :)
@JessicaHenry

Condition what? Brushes? Nope, I wash them and dry them. Because I’m using them almost everyday, that’s all the conditioning I’ll be giving them. My care for my brushes is minimalistic, though.

Would you please tell us what kind of back pack that is?
@JessicaHenry
@JessicaHenry 6 лет назад
Thanks Joe, That one is by Katee, and it's heavy canvas and extremely durable. I thought it looked really cool, but found it to be much heavier than needed. I prefer the plein air back pack made by Sienna. Its lightweight, is specifically made for plein air painting and costs about the same, $60.

What do you do to keep paint fresh on your palette that you do not use on your painting?
@JessicaHenry
@JessicaHenry 5 лет назад
You can put it in a plastic container and keep it in the freezer when not in use. Personally, I paint almost everyday, so I just "de-skin" as needed.
@tracyjones1344
@tracyjones1344 7 лет назад
Also how do you clean your wooden box when done.
@JessicaHenry
@JessicaHenry 7 лет назад
I just scrape it with a palette knife then wipe it down with a little OMS on a paper towel.
@tracyjones1344
@tracyjones1344 7 лет назад
The wooden box had paint in it from the day before. It doesn't dry up? If it does do you had medium to activate it again or scrape it off
@JessicaHenry
@JessicaHenry 7 лет назад
Hi Tracy, since I paint just about everyday, I usually only have a little dry paint to contend with. I just scrape it off and add more if needed. Sometimes I'll scrape it all the way down and start over. The mixing area I always keep clean. (Cough...cough...) ☺️

you can put oil of cloves on a cotton ball and leave inside the box (doesn't have to be tight close); the paint will remain wet for weeks.

I do, and I will be bringing it to Ireland next week with me. I don't always use it though, mostly because for filming, it darkens my canvas too much. But they are nice to beat the heat and reduce glare.

@@JessicaHenry I'm just reading your reply to Cynthia now (April 2022). Did you come to Ireland, & if so where did you go painting? I live on the West coast. Bet you didn't need your first aid kit for snake bites! 🙂

Helen and Daniel Reynolds hi! Yes, I’ve missed Ireland not being able to be back in a while. But I’m coming again on the 13th of June- I’ll be teaching in Kilrush for a two day workshop (I believe it’ll be one day portrait and one day Plein air) then I’m teaching at the Dublin Plein air festival on the 21st. Can’t wait to return!

@@JessicaHenry I'm not too far from Kilrush - on the map ( but driving down the small, winding country roads takes forever to get to your destination 🙂 If you are here for a few days I recommend you visit an area named the Burren, and the Pol na Bron (also spelt Poulnabrone) Dolmen in the Burren. Again, it's not far from Kilrush on the map. This tomb is older than both Stonehenge in England, and the pyramids in Egypt.
