In this past week Tim Follin's brother Geoff who also assisted him on making soundtracks passed away from pancreatic cancer. Rest in peace.

Tragically Geoff Follin passed away earlier this week to pancreatic cancer. Plok's soundtrack is allegedly nigh impossible to rip from the game so a lot of RU-vid uploads (especially the older ones) are not of the clearest quality as you probably heard, which is probably why the cassette release was requested as it was the first official soundtrack release iirc. Why a cassette? Same reason we get vinyl releases, people love their old physical media. Tim's legacy dates back to the good ol' ZX Spectrum with one channel of audio. He winds up doing exactly as you'd expect him to at the ripe young age of 15.

When a soundtrack is so good that you can't tell what you heard was either the original or modified. This games soundtrack will go down in history as one of the greats

Not really related to VGM directly, but I'll always credit Tim for my absolute love of prog metal since he infused so many cool prog metal/prog rock musical bits into his soundtracks. One of the reasons I'll always consider him one of my favorites of all time, it was so formative to my music taste even to this day!

Plok was among the many mascot platformer/games that came out during the SNES. It wasn't very popular at all and it was brutally difficult for lots of reasons. The music though? Well... you've been hearing.

Oh hey, my request is finally here! I'm been waiting for this for a long time. The Plok soundtrack is what got me interested in prog rock. To clear things up, the 2019 cassette release is one of the two official releases of the soundtrack that I know of, the other being the 2020 vinyl release. Both are the original soundtrack recorded directly from the game and not remix or rearrangement albums. Many of the most popular unofficial recordings of the soundtrack I've found on RU-vid have a "crunchy" sound because they were recorded without the SNES's audio filter to remove the aliasing.

The cassette release version is actually just the original SNES music, maybe a bit remastered. Plok is probably Tim's most known soundtrack honestly, aside from Pictionary, Silver Surfer and Solstice.

6:35 This has probably been mentioned in a previous Plok vid, but this OST is extra wizardly because it does all this while leaving two audio channels entirely untouched for sound effects to play without cutting into the music. I'm not sure how true it is, but there's a story that Shigeru Miyamoto opened up a cart because he couldn't believe there wasn't another sound chip in there contributing

30:25 My brother and I did rent this game as a kid, and I'm not sure if I consciously picked up on the music at the time, but the game overall was so distinctive that it stuck with me and I looked into it when emulation got easy.

We do know Miyamoto was very impressed with the game, going as far as calling it the third-best platformer at the time, behind Mario and Sonic. Nintendo ended up acting as a publisher for Plok!, but only in Europe - it's possible the cartoony style of the game helped inspire the look of Yoshi's Island, which was being developed at the time.
@JoeDan54
@JoeDan54 3 месяца назад
The Miyamoto story is frequently wildly exaggerated. It's true that he was impressed by the soundtrack, but there's nothing to support the idea that he didn't believe the hardware was unmodified.

Three channels were left alone. Three out of eight. It's _amazing_ but also very frustrating. No way did they need almost half of the SNES's voices just for sound effects. This is a crew that came straight from Amiga development so they were very used to getting only one voice for effects and usually not even that. I will be forever baffled. Apparently, Follin's _Equinox_ OST uses only _four_ of the SNES's voices. (But then again, it's quite a bit more subdued as an OST.)

Tim's brother Geoff actually composed 75% of the music for Plok so he may have composed this

Best part, in most his songs Tim would leave 2 audio channels empry so that during gameplay, no matter what, the sound effects never stopped the nusic

Follin's best work is Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future. Especially tracks like Passage to Genesis, Hanging Waters, and Aquamarine Bay. But I really love how he pushed sound systems in older consoles like with Plok or Silver Surfer. I second the others who say Akrillic is another great track from Plok!

Plok is funny, cause when I heard Beach for the first time in a youtube video and saw it was sourced from an SNES game, I didn't believe that shit for a second. Then you actually play it, and uh... it hits different when you hear those synths on hardware, coming from CRT TV speakers.

If you wanna hear the first Tim works, might check his ZX Spectrum / Amstrad / Atari (not the best ones here) works. Yes, they're brilliant. But the ZX Spectrum sound chip might kinda heart your ears on first listening lol. Great open mind and reaction as usual. Also rip Geoff

As a huge PLOK! Enjoyer, i would recommend listening to the Title Theme and the Bonus Level, they are absolutely stunning, Tim was absolute wizard for putting this stuff on the SNES of all things, also recommend the ethereal Time Trax soundtrack but you can listen to that another time

Plok! was one of those games where the game was Okay but the soundtrack seemed like it was for a different game because it far out paces the game XD. If you haven't heard anything from Contra Hard Corps (Genesis) I think you'd like that soundtrack. Specifically "The Hard Corps" , "Format X" & "Last Springsteen" .
