I'm happy for Jade, if this is her decision then I hope she enjoys it! Just wanted to share an encounter I had with the CEO of Minerva. I met him in real life at an education conference, he told me I "sounded like a Minerva student" and should apply, when I told him I couldn't apply there because I was interested in Canada he called me a "hypocrite" for wanting the education system to change yet still going to a "stereotypical" and traditional school. I retaliated saying Minerva was simply unaffordable and not the way I learnt and he went on about how great the university was and how it was a "paradigm shift" in regards to learning. He basically tried to recruit me by belittling my university choices. If I'm being honest, this university is for the rich, many of which have their head up their arse thinking their superior to other uni's because they're diFfeRenT. Jade's definitely not like this but from the students I've seen, they sort of are. I respect peoples choices to go there but don't belittle mine for not. I watched a video by the CEO just recently about Minerva and in the video you can see the elitist behaviour. Talking about how other universities can't compare, how their students are "miles" ahead. What's so different about this university? Travel? They do realize exchange programs exist? Extra-curricular involvement? Please, the average university can offer hundreds. Online learning? A google search away. I don't mean to bash Jade btw, love her and a big fan of hers always. I even brought her up to the CEO saying I really appreciated who she is, I just don't appreciate the CEO or the university. That said, I'm happy with Jade's decision to go there, it is after all, her choice:)
@tessaowens
@tessaowens 4 года назад
Hey, thank you for this comment!! I'm so sorry about the experience you had with the CEO. Internally, among the students, many of us at Minerva actually struggle with our interactions with him and he is not the most popular person... so I feel you. The rest of Minerva & students there are much more humble and many of us come from struggling financial backgrounds.

@@AyshaRehmen I will certainly not give out her name nor the courses she followed at Minerva on a social network. She is allowed a minimum of privacy. Also I really doubt you know every one unless you graduate on the same year. It's a rather small structure but still. It's not The Little House on the Prairie either. The first annual retention rate was 92%, the second 95% and class of 2019 was 87% so yeah, some people do drop out of/quit Minerva (cf. Quora). And my cousin turns out to be one of them. However if you really are a Minerva student and literally stalk people who speak about it on social networks, you're giving off creepy vibes and a bad image of the school you represent. Just sayin'.

@@pipobputhipiroj9043 Employers outside the Minerva system were reluctant to offer her internships. Outside the Minerva sphere, she came to the conclusion that the school was either not well known or not well seen. And it didn't match her career plans.

Agathe Rigault just to be clear Amii (close friend of mine) never asked for personally identifiable information lol, she’s never just heard of your cousin. We’re both class of 2020 and so it’s possible your cousin matriculated in 2014 and dropped out the same year we enrolled and so we’ve never heard of her. What your cousin says about Minerva not being well known (not well seen isn’t really a thing) is totally valid though and many students, myself included share these concerns. Name recognition can be really powerful for getting to interviews, but after that you still need to prove your merit like everyone else. Just thinking from a hypothetical recruiter’s point of view though, I wouldn’t immediately throw out an application if I don’t recognize the university and would be intrigued if they’ve completed multiple interesting internships across multiple countries. Speaking empirically though students have been accepted to positions at google, Facebook, apple, Amazon, linkedin, so I think we have decent name recognition among tech startups at least. What field was your cousin in, out of curiosity?

Ummmm makes sense because this uni is started in silicon valley. No one talks about getting jobs OUTSIDE of silicon valley, where employees have never heard about the college. Some will join nonprofits likeDosomething, OpenPhilanthrony. A couple are going to new york for finance. Pipob Puthipiroj but no Oxford, Cambridge etc where jade wants to live in the future. So basically recognised in the US but I’m not seeing other foreign universities, apart from the one Canada mentioned. Also can you provide information about what kind of programs, was it medicine, law etc or give some names because I’ve tried to look up people in Linkedin and I haven’t seen anyone doing postgraduate study at a prestigious university post Minerva. Further, can you disclose if you worked in the Minerva admin team as it seems like many students have directly worked for Minerva.

??? I literally mentioned Cambridge, not sure which college (for Math). If you want specifically postgrad at prestigious universities, I can think of Harvard (one doing Phd in Biology, another doing work at stem cell lab), NYU (Phd in Data Science), Berkeley (Phd in quantum? Physics). I don't want to give names, but you can probably find them on linkedin (just make sure you're looking at profiles that graduated in 2019). Finally, I'm a student, and no, I don't work with the admin team. edit: I just remembered that the guy who got into Harvard also got accepted to a Phd program at oxford.

I am very happy for you Jade and I hope that this all pans out as it is meant to. I will voice that I do share concerns that others have expressed in the comments; living in the US I am very used to seeing how the for-profit university model advertises itself, and the kind of promises they make. Unfortunately this particular university raises a lot of those red flags for me. I do hope that I am wrong on so many levels, but I also hope that you are able to keep your wits about you if something doesn't feel right and not be caught up in the glitz and glamour of travelling the world. It sounds wonderful, but frequently those things that sound too good to be true are. I would definitely be cautious and ask them not only about their admissions rate (which are frequently conflated by for profit and non profit universities to be smaller than they actually are) but also for the percentage of graduates that have gainful employment after a year, and also be sure to ask for descriptive data regarding what that employment is. Again, frequently universities of all kinds will inflate this percentage to seem artificially high but the number of students actually employed in their field and not, say, at a grocery store, is very low. I worry that, with this university being relatively unheard of (speaking as an American so I'd think I would have heard of it) that this four years will not lead to gainful employment in the sector you seek, which is unfortunately the case for a lot of schools that are either for profit or have questionable accreditation.

Hey! I'm a current student and stumbled on this video (not like paid or supported by Minerva). Firstly, the actual university part (Minerva Schools) is a nonprofit and the company that makes the video chat (Minerva Project) is for profit. In regards to employment rate.... it's currently 0%. I'm in the first graduating class and we're graduating in a week. It's VERY new. That being said, my class is moving on to a wide variety of callings, and I'm so excited for everyone. Some students are going to tech companies (incl. Twitter, Google, I'm going to Uber). Some are going to non-profits (e.g. a friend working in India at an evalution non-profit, or another going to DC for ethical tech) and some are going to finance (PE firms) or continuing their education (one student going to Harvard Med, NYU, Cambridge). My class is only about ~100 students, but each one's story and motivation excites the shit out of me, and I know they'll go on to change the world. In that sense I'm in no way at all worried about the employment percentage for Minerva grads. I think the stories of Minerva '19 and future classes will speak for themselves.

Jade, I know this is too late but what you could have done is to just go to Bristol University and then just sign up or apply for international internships/volunteering after summer exams if travelling is what you like. That way at least you know you are going to a genuine and recognised institution and you can decide exactly where to go in the world. Literally everyone I know who got rejected from their first university preference have no regrets at all once they settle at their second option and would never change it for the world for the friends they have made and the people they are redirected to. Did some research on Minerva and the guy who runs it and he really infuriates me. He has this vision that all universities should reform and utilise these strategies that Minerva do, he says "Universities must respond to Minerva, either by adopting our system or, ideally, by coming up with something that's even better that we can adopt"...but can you imagine if every university in the world was doing this? Right now, Minerva science students can only use labs from partner universities (I think?) or other lab facilities, so if every university did this there would be no labs, and can you imagine hundreds and thousands of students overcrowding all these other lab facilities where people need to work?? Also keeping track of say 22,000 students who are all over the world all the time would be a nightmare. He has said and I quote "You do not get an education in a traditional university. You get information, you may learn a subject. But an education requires a structured, deliberate programme that develops the individual mind" I mean i don't even need to explain how untrue this is, my university course is all of those things as I'm sure every other traditional university is lmao. He also bangs on about how "Our students after one year go on internships and they are able to do the kinds of jobs in the workplace that third-year Ivy League students would struggle to do. So they perform at a level that is substantially higher than any of their peers." That is a bold statement and one that I really don't think he can make without some really convincing stats to back it up, and (from what I've seen) he hasn't done any studies comparing a group of Ivy league students to a group of Minerva students in an internship. He put's down people who have gone to countries to build houses for example Uganda (where my friend is currently doing this), saying "We're not particularly impressed if mum and dad put you on a plane to Honduras and had you build a house for someone" I feel like this is very ignorant and generalises everyone who goes away to do this, my friend spent a year raising £1400 and another couple hundred for vaccinations to go over there with not a single penny from her parents. I guess open-mindedness isn't one of the skills Minerva looks to develop in its students. Okay I could go on for days but one thing that personally pushes my buttons are these types of comments "As for learning a language, he advises buying software, visiting a country, or “getting a boyfriend” who speaks it." I am currently studying a modern languages degree and this totally infuriates me. I finished the Duolingo tree, and I am not fluent, I have plenty of friends who speak my target language and yet I cannot interpret in a business scenario. It's just once again so ignorant and close minded, and that is why I could not advise anyone to go to a university knowing that this man is in charge.
@eb2142
@eb2142 4 года назад
i know that this isn't entirely relevant to the point of your comment, but I just wanted to say that you should look into the damage that going to build houses in these nations does to communities. There are plenty of videos here on youtube addressing how performative it is when there are a myriad of other ways to help which - while perhaps not allowing young people to take photos for Instagram with poor kids and write a college essay on how the trip 'changed their life' - do not inflict the same psychological and economic impacts :)

I went on a major Minerva rabbit-hole today, and I ended up in a similar mindset to you. I even listened to an NPR debate that the founder took part in! I kind of think they're just using the school as a test subjects/PR for the technology. Getting well-accomplished and smart students only makes them look better, and due to the cost of the school, they're likely to have family connections, and enough clout to be able to make it in their chosen field. This guy comes from tech, not education, and they're partnering with universities to use their software. I'm surprised they don't have more partnerships going considering the pandemic, but maybe the intensity of the data monitoring is too much for a lot of institutions. I can't believe that they even record video of people taking the "challenges"! How much data do they have on all of the people that have enrolled in the university, and how is it used?

It sounds like a great opportunity to travel, but not exactly the most sensible option in terms of a viable career and a legitimate higher education, especially given how much you would be paying for it? I mean it's great that they give you financial support, but loans aren't just free money so you will have to pay it back eventually. You say that the learning experience is going to be a lot more immersive than traditional university since everything is done in seminars but most universities have seminars anyway? From what I've seen online as well these online classes aren't exactly small groups, they consist of around 20 people, how can 20 people actively contribute to what is effectively a Skype call with your professor? Plus if you're considering still doing biology or natural sciences, you need to have some kind of lab experience; how would you be able to get the same experience when there are no classroom facilities? I think the thrill of travelling around the world seems appealing now, especially because you've had the taste for that in your gap year, but honestly it must be absolutely exhausting to have to keep up with your studies and travel to a new country every few months. And for what? You'll still be with the same group of people every time. One thing I've really loved about university is that even though you're situated in one place, you still manage to meet new people constantly. I attend a campus university that is relatively small, and am in my final year and have still managed to make new friends, even on my course when I thought I knew a reasonable amount of people! Sure, you'll go to different countries and experience new cultures and meet people in each country, but with a tiny cohort you might find that it will get exhausting spending 4 years with the same people, especially if things go wrong, or if you don't get on well with each other, which is a huge possibility. I think it sounds like a great opportunity but at the same time I feel as if this seems a bit rash? A consequence of the fantastic gap year travels you've had perhaps? Even at a conventional university, you have the opportunity to travel whenever you want to; people go all over the place during our long summers, and I know plenty of people who have just had the opportunity to dash off to a country for a week in the middle of term just because they feel like it, lol. I wish you all the best but sometimes going with your 'gut' isn't enough, especially with something which doesn't seem 100% legitimate and fully worth it.
@pipobputhipiroj9043
@pipobputhipiroj9043 5 лет назад
This is a super well thought out comment, and many of the criticisms you give are accurate. Travelling every few months is exhausting, but each time you adapt quicker and quicker and eventually you get to the point where it only takes a few days to completely adjust to being a new country. And the community is indeed small, which can be a pro as well as a con for the reasons you mention (harder to make new friends beyond the cohort - you need to be more intentional in meeting new people, via events, clubs, etc). There are also similarities between Minerva seminars (small groups, everyone talks) as well as differences (the professor acts more as a moderator and talks very little, students MUST be prepared for classes or risk annoying their more responsible classmates and getting penalized). The other things you mention are less of an issue. Lab experience can be gained at the labs of partner universities (e.g. hanyang univeristy in seoul, university of hyderabad). Classes are capped at 18 max and 3 (or 4) min. First year classes are almost always full because they are mandatory, and classes generally get smaller over time. My third year optimization class had 6 people total.

@JuBoMarlen
@JuBoMarlen 5 лет назад
I think having a small cohort can potentially be great for making friends, especially because they are likely to all have a similar mind set and you go through so much together when living in different countries! I've been on an exchange year in India during high school and stayed in a house of 20 international students, sharing a room with 3 other girls. Those girls became the closest friends I've ever had and although I made really good friends later on at uni too (and I agree it's a great thing about uni to constantly meet new people), nothing quite matched going through all the amazing experiences and the challenges of living in such a different country together. It just really bonds you together so much! Of course you can always get unlucky with any social group, but from what I've seen/read about Minerva so far it looks like there is plenty of opportunity for finding some really special friendships. And I'm sure with such a unique and challenging programme there will be good career options afterwards, even if some of the employers might not know/value the degree as much there will be others that look out for people like that. So I really hope Jade is not going to be influenced too much by all the sceptical comments!

Well be know it now after she applied and she was admitted maybe she wouldn’t even say a thing if she had been rejected , and it’s really disgusting that she didn’t even think on her community and supporters. I KNOW SHE DOESNT OWN US A THING ( everybody is free to follow her or not as well as subscribe to her channel or not) but AS A STUDY TUBER she usually do videos with advices and so as a community we should support each other, I know what is internet and sure I can also make my own research (which I have done) but sometimes you miss this kind of opportunities and it shouldn’t happen if you have somebody who really likes supporting others. The thing is that okay I understand she was in a rush but she can comment about the uni on Instagram maybe on stories or something just in case someone also was interested. She has her right if she want to be quiet but I have also the right to express my opinion. I don’t care what you say, I won’t change my mind , in my opinion she didn’t play right , but that doesn’t mean I don’t wish her the best. I hope she can achieve whatever she purpose in her life. respect my opinion the world would be so boring if we all have the same mind.

Also, there's no such thing as true global immersion as part of a curriculum, that's ridiculous. It takes time to immerse yourself globally.

@@amyj2481 noo not literally, minerva is nothing like the open university.... and its not for rich people. i study at the ou and there are no lectures, just one online tutorial every 2 months where you can't speak or see the tutor. You are examined in minerva by your level or engagment in the classes, everyone has to engage all throughout the classes, which encourages learning instead of listening to information passively. It's a better way to study. It's also cheaper than regular university as there is no campus so I don't know why you think its for rich people? Its for very intelligent people, not rich people. The entrance exam is IQ tests, there is a threshold you must reach in order to be accepted, which is pretty high, which is why so few people pass the entrance exam.

As much as I'm happy for you, I'm a bit sceptical about this Minerva University thing. It seems really dodgy you have to move across the world for a university that doesn't even have a campus??? How are you going to meet people? You could have applied to other more prestigious US universities like Stanford & Princeton which have the same diverse and liberal curriculum, where you can do semesters abroad. However, It's your decision at the end of the day. I hope you think through this carefully.
@manortheatrecompanystoke-o8346
These are my setiments also. I am happy for her too so my comments are only from concern. A 'virtual university' that says a whole city in seven countries is it's campus just sounds very odd.

I guess it's cause for other US universities you have to do the SAT but not for Minerva- I get what you mean though cause a lot of people on quora are saying how it didn't meet their expectations, how stressful things are etc. But tbf she has probs done her research

It seems like rather than being ‘over’ not being accepted into Oxford she’s just removing herself from the entire UK/US uni system so that her pride isn’t hurt by settling for a less elite uni than oxbridge. I’m def not saying only oxbridge will validate her, just I’m genuinely worried she’s making drastic and vulnerable decisions just bc she couldn’t play the system her way. Choosing your uni should be about where you think you'd most enjoy yourself, not just about what name on your cv will make ppl think you're the cleverest. I believe there's lots of UK/US unis Jade could go to and love but I just think she's not thinking about the experience as much as the prestige, and that's why she's going to minerva bc it's unheard of and outside of that whole ranking system. She should take some inspo from ruby, she seems genuinely well adjusted even tho she doesn't go to oxbridge.

Rhianna why do people idolise oxford and cambridge so much? minerva is literally revolutionising education. i’m sure she doesn’t have such a childish approach as this in mind when applying to minerva.

@@erin4230 Because in order to get into oxbridge, students usually start preparing when they're 16 years old - MINIMUM. They have to choose their subjects carefully and ace literally everything and apply before the other students who are applying to 'regular' universities. To make it more stressful, you can only apply to one. You then have to take more exams just for oxbridge and you definitely have to go for an interview. Also, it's considered prestigious by friends and family to be even /applying/. So the rejection from this is seriously damaging. I'm not surprised young people end up having early mid-life crisis's or breakdowns over this. But I'm genuinely happy to see Ruby settle into regular university life.

@@erin4230 Hey! As someone who has gone through the Oxbridge application process (and was rejected), there is a huge amount of pressure from schools to apply to top unis if you have the grades, especially Oxbridge. I actually applied for Cambridge and application date was in October which is 4 months before national deadlines for any other unis which means you had to be on the game from the start of year 12 (when you're 16) in order to have a chance. You then typically sit a couple entrance exams, fill out extra application forms (mine was a SAQ) and then go through interviews! This is where the top professors talk and question you on your chosen subject area. It's actually quite nerving wracking but if there was pressure on the student to get in then it is really disappointing if you didn't get it, especially since Oxford and Cambridge are literally in the top 5 unis GLOBALLY

I just want to start with, I think you and your videos are awesome; you're clearly an insanely motivated, hardworking and genuinely nice person. However, having seen your video and looking more into Minerva, I really do think you need to be incredibly cautious about this. The idea of travelling around the world sounds amazing but I can't stress enough how isolating moving away to uni can be, let alone having to pack up every 4 months. I know no lectures sounds like the dream but having been to uni myself, I couldn't imagine only having learning time online- I think it has the potential to be extremely isolating as it'll require extensive solo study and little out source for 1:1 teaching etc. You're clearly smart and capable of making your decision but please please do some more research on this and don't just get caught up in the excitement of it all. Please do read the comments expressing concern about this because I don't think anyone wants to be negative but there are several things of what you've said that raises red flags. Having said that, I wish you the very best of luck.
