Plotter is an output device, similar to printers, which is used to print vector graphics. Vector graphics are the images which are made up of geometric objects such as points, lines, shapes, polygon etc. Vector graphics are resolution independent, there's no loss of quality, so it can be sized to however large or small you need it to be. And Plotter are used to print these graphics. Plotters are used to produce hard copies of large graphs and designs on paper, such as construction maps, engineering drawings, building structure, architectural plans, business charts etc. Plotters use ink pen or inkjet to draw graphics or drawing.
The first plotter was invented in 1953 by Remington-Rand. It was used in conjunction with the UNIVAC computer to created technical drawings. There are various advantages and Disadvantages of Plotters which is thoroughly discussed in the video.
There are two types of plotter first is Drum Plotter and second one is Flatbed Plotter. Drum Plotters are also known as pen plotter. Drum plotter wraps the paper around a drum with a pin feed attachment. The drum then rotates the paper as pens move across it and draw the image. It was the first output device used to print graphics and large engineering drawings. Printing speed of Drum Plotter is slow. In Flatbed Plotter paper remains stationary on a flat surface while a pen moves across it horizontally and vertically. Flatbed Plotter plotter may use several different pen colors to create the graphics. Flatbed plotter is used to design complex designs, engineering drawing, construction maps, and architectural plans.
