Ploughs, 70s, RHTTs and Intermodals at Carlisle. 05 Dec 23
Over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd December central and southern Cumbria were hit by heavy snow causing chaos on the roads and Furness line. On 4th December DRS were asked to run the independent snowploughs down to BArrow in Furness. In fact they were following a Class 37 which was proving the route. In the event the ploughs ran no further than Sellafield. We see them in the darkness passing through Carlisle station on their return to Kingmoor TMD.
Colas had to send a Class 70 to Carlisle YArd to take the Logs to Chirk. Presumably there were problems with 70812, the usual loco. We also see another two 70s on other duties.
The RHTT trains were running as were the Intermodals.
The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.

That's the first time I've seen those snow plows being used on the tracks Les. You got a great variety of trains here, ideal viewing whilst having my coffee you do some great camera work my friend.

Thank you very much! A first for me too with the ploughs - only seen the, on their annual test runs. Four are always in the sidings at the DRS Kingmoor Depot.

Makes a change wen they were sent out to do a job and not just a test run.

Cool video with the plows in action, too. I personally liked the shot of the slow Tesco and the Avanti heading off, as well as the long shots of the two trains (DMU and a TPE, I think) coming in. Nice all around!

Thanks Anthony. I think the long slow shot of the Tesco train makes for relaxation with your morning brew!

Those VTG tanks - do the colours indicate the contents? Avantis with 'Z' headcodes - signs of distress elsewhere? I wonder where all the trees that are on the 'logs' come from to have daily trains.
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching, as ever. The colours on the tanks - no idea - I think they may have been branded at some time. The Z headcodes - where the company such as Avanti has run something special rather than the suual service. With Avanti they often terminate services at Preston and run to a separate schedule north. The logs on the Carlisle-Chirk trains come from the Kielder forest and taken by road to Carlisle.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thank you for that, Les. Keilder is a BIG forest. I read from what you tell me that this is a tactic by Avanti to negate late running S of Preston over the northern half of the route

Great videos Les, pardon my ignorance but are the 68xxx on RHTT duties working in tandem or does the one on the front do all the work??
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 9 месяцев назад
Caught me on that one! I'm usually too busy focussing on my filming than listening! I think only the leading unit is working but others may know better.
@iannorman249
@iannorman249 9 месяцев назад
@@LeslieGilpinRailwaysthanks Les, I was just wondering from an operation perspective if they had a cable running through the wagons that connected them. Like when they work in tandem, and further to that can 68xxx and 88xxx ( possibly 93xxx!) be connected!!
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 9 месяцев назад
Listening to one yesterday, both locos are running. However I believe tandem control is only possible if the locos are coupled together (or through Mk 5 Nova 3 carriages to the cab end). I'm going on the principle that the rear loco is on say notch2 where it will run at speed if necessary but thw preceding loco and wagons can stop it.

That was good mix. Seeing the snowploughs it crossed my mind that the lamps on them looked a bit vulnerable in heavy snow. Excuse my ignorance but in the steam days we had nicknames for different classes, are there nicknames for diesels and electrics?
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 9 месяцев назад
Thanks! As for nicknames I rarely use them myself but a simple google search will reveal lots!
