The city has many names long before it is named after Philip who actually puts the city to the torch twice. It is ancient Thracian settlement long before it is anything else. Kendrissos , Evmolpias, Pulpudeva, Trimontsium, Ulpia, Flavia Julia, Plapdiv, Puldin, Ploudin are some of the names of the city. There was a great public debate to remove the statue of Philip from the pedestrian center and it was moved to another place.
