They said they got the 2-85 out of Pennsylvania. They repainted the sheet metal but left the rest original. The 598 would be a great plow for plow days. You could swing it in and out to straighten out any crooked furrows.

Despite what many would claim, even a 2 bottom you still got a lot of ground rolled over. Back in the day, something that many of today has forgotten or isn't taught, many local farmers would get together and help each other in their fields. There is a reason why it's called a "farming community" after all. When we plowed, we went deep, spindle hub, center of the front wheel would drag or be slightly above the ground while in the furrow. We learned, go deep and pull all the leeched fertilizer(s) back up towards the top where the roots will have a better chance at utilizing what leeched further down. Ah Chris, ya showed my all time favorite tractor... JD 730. Where's that slacker "squatchRoss" at? LOL In all seriousness, love these old machines, they were made back in the day when manufacturers knew how to build solid equipment unlike today's equipment. Great video as always, cheers :)

I wouldn't turn it away, that's for sure. The first Spirit was sold at a dealer only auction. Dad came home from that kicking himself that he hadn't lined up some money to buy it because it went for about 20k less than our dealer cost of a new 185. He thought it would go for more. He said we would have sold the 2-155 and used it on the farm. The dealer that did buy it sold it to a dairy farm in Ohio, where it still resides

Great video! Plows around here have all gone to the scrap piles. I loved the last one where the disk was dogging the plow. It reminded me of Mr. Burch, Burch Plow Works, Evansville, IN, who told my group of college Ag-Mechanics students about how they tested their plows on their farm down south. It was a trip where we went there, Hahn Sprayer plant, Caterpillar dealership, and I forgot (80-year-old brain fart) another place. Mr. Burch took the boys personally through the plant and I cannot tell the memorable (racist) answer to one student's question on their plow testing down south. On another trip we took them to Jasper Engine's plant to see how they rebuild engines. Alvin Ruxer, the founder of the company, who had risen from being a car wash boy in a Lincoln car dealership, took the boys into the conference room and made a presentation about how people threw money out of the window of their cars every time they stopped hard, accelerated hard, drove fast and so on. Every time he pointed to one of those money losers he reached into his pocket and threw money into the corner of the room. When we got back to the college those young men left the parking area like a bunch of little old ladies.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Месяц назад
Alvin sounds like my kind of guy. My car has almost 140,000 miles and still has the factory brakes. I did the pickup at 100,000 because one pad decided to fall apart, the rest had very little wear. A good family friend retired from Fischer Body at General Motors. Back in the 60s and 70s his brother worked in testing. He got to do things like drive across railroad tracks as fast as possible, try to slide it, and so on. One test he was told about was clutches in the Olds Cutlass. He got paid to rev that engine up and dump the clutch at full rpm, over and over. If memory serves, it was 23 times that Cutlass could do that before the clutch would fail. What a job!

Chris, you mention 15 horse power per bottom as an estimate. Down our way we figured one horse power per inch of plow. Not a big difference, but there were a lot of tractors in the 50's sized right around 42-45 hp that were intended to pull a 3x14 plow.
