Restoring well performance.
If your pump's output starts dropping you might have had some heaving into the bottom of the well. In my case it was uber fine silt movement that settled out in the bottom of the sandpoint suction line. This kind of sediment, especially with a full winter to pack, can set up like concrete or clay. No way your pump can lift it after it has clumped up. This can happen a lot in wells that are used off and on rather than continuously but if your pint is in fine glacial till like mine then eventually the fines will start packing up and you will lose surface area on your screens resulting in water loss. I was very successful in cleaning mine and it was easy for me to do. Your results will vary and understand you undertake all projects AT YOUR OWN RISK.
In the video I also show how to clean a screen that might have mineral scale (turns out mine didn't) and talk about how to bleach a well if you end up with bacterial growth. (normally the result of surface water contamination or critters falling in)

Good info I need to do the compressed air trick! Well stopped producing so much after 2-3 years. Guess they need service. I did the hous to the bottom might put a jet tip on it and try that then the air w needle. The bubbles in your water is probably pump cavitation try to slight close outlet valve on pump. If it’s a vacuum leak or would lose prime often

I know this is a 7 year old video but this really helped me . My wells had run dry , I came across your video and tried to use vinegar as a last ditch effort and it worked! My wells are producing more water than they did when they were newly drilled. Thank you!

Ingenious! I came here after I built my own version. Yours might work better. I bought a 5 foot section of pex, used a sharkbite plug on the bottom side of the pex, sealed with marine adhesive and crimped. Up top I used a shark bite to 3/4 npt and sealed and crimped. From there 3/4 NPT Male to female hose connection. PVC pipe drilled at the bottom with 4 small holes for pressure. Then dropped down the well on full pressure from the hose. I was thinking of using my pressure washer next time attached to the PVC, hence the marine adhesive AND the sharkbite crimp.

Pete L Good luck. If you have a lot of minerals in your water you might dump a gallon of vinegar you chilled real cold in the freezer down the hole first and wait an hour before starting. Colder the better so it sinks to the bottom of the well.

Great video.This is exactly what I needed. Have a pitcher pump well which hasn't been used in at least 25 years and the last time that it was it didn't work so well. Turns out that I did exactly what you did to tune up the pitcher pump with the hone and valve lapping compound. Had to replace the leathers as they were poor quality with some from Campbell, for about $8 local. Anyway, back to the well. With the tuned up pitcher pump, there is so much suction from the clogged point that the leather flapper is stuck so hard to the base that it has to be pried up. Can't wait to try your method. I'm going to use a 10' section of copper pipe and put in a 1/4 turn ball valve and wear a face shield and rain jacket to speed up the process. Cheers- Illigitimi non carborundum.

After watching this again how long is your screen and how deep is the well? How did you fix your air leak or was it just air you hadn't gotten out of the system as it wasn't fully primed yet? A longer pipe for getting to the bottom of your screen would have benefited you too when blowing it out. Still nice to watch.

i have a deep well 333 feet deep, over the years i have had to pull the pump in 20 sections .. 1st was 20 2nd was another 20 feet then the 3rd was another 20 feet. total of 60 feet pulled up.. the well still wants to pump iron and when it was first drilled at their bottoomw depth, the well digging out fit assured me that i had more water than i was use.. and they were right, but i had a small iron stream at 98 feet. i had the well cased to 100 feet which i thought would stop the iron stream

ask well diggers when lightening got my pump to case out other 100 feet. I already had 20 foot cased.. 100 plus the 20 would get me away from iron stream.. ruined my well ..I will try 75 pounds of cnty water pressure down into my well and run the well pump to bring up silt from the bottom..mainproblem is i need to get down to actual btm where my unstoppable water supply is.piping is 20' pvc sections. bending will break them...weight of all sections + pump is to heavy for me to pickup..IDEAS???

In Florida we jet down 2" pvc 35' or so and theres much freaking water off two stacked well points its insane like 20+ gpm Installed my well 2 years ago and it still produces fine but we have sand and layers of grey clay i got 17-20 gpm on my first successful well took me 5 days to figure out using the pump and a pool of 500+ gallons makes it easyer im not gunna say it was easy ! But every area is diffrent my successful one took about an hour if you want to sink another point id use a pump and pool i did not use bentonite but that would make it easyer i had alot of failures before i got a sucess

Tripod above the well head then maybe a weighted slipknot around the pvc, that might get it. IDK pvc is slippery and it isn't going to want to hold. Maybe you can lift on the pump wires, sometimes they are reenforced for that but I don't know what to tell you to look for. Hate to rip them out. If you are just trying to blast h2o at the silt on the bottom screw 3' of 3/4 steel pipe to garden hose and drop that all the way down alongside or use 1/2 poly to go inside your water lift pipe.

Just a small bit of pipe screwed into the air hose. You might also try vinegar down the well pipe if you have hard water. If your check valve is at the bottom if the well neither of these ideas will work unfortunately. Maybe the vinegar if your check valve leaks a bit.

I'm afraid it wouldn't work for me. I put a foot check valve just above the point. Oh well, should I have a plug I guess it's just pull 60' of pipe out of the hole for me. Nice job though.

Ive got to try this with my parents sand point well the question i have is the sand point is completely clogged theres no water coming in and this well runs the whole house. Theirs no City water at my parents and all ive got is a 20 gallon air compressor how should i go about this and is a 20 air compressor enough to blow it out?

In Australia we either lift the spear and clean the head using a mild hydrochloric/ water mix then scrub the meshed areas with a soft brush, hit with a hose to wash off then hammer back down or for a very short term fix we wash the hcl/h2o mix down the hole , attach a hose with good pressure to a special fitting that seals onto the pipe and blow it backward. This works great but is a very short term fix as it soon blocks up again. Most of our spears are now placed in the ground rather than hammer down as the plastic points last for about 25yrs compared to the steel ones which are 5 yrs max

The air is pumping / air lifting the water out and muratic acid after you blew & flushed the crap & sand out would have cleaned you screen better than vinegar. Then bleach it and over nite/ 12 hrs is fine but a common plain bleach off the shelf may be inert. A pin hole leak should keep you from pumping or show as a leak by losing pressure after pumping up and shutting off & gas could be present in the well.
@billwilson5341

Muriatic Acid has to be used with great care. It could eat up and destroy your pump elements.

You can use air also, just drill a threaded cap that fits your pipe to the right size for a tubeless tire valve stem. Then give er 120 psi with a compressor until it takes it all and disconnect it.. usually does the trick 👍

sand entered slowly after someone put a new pump and changed or the pipe that goes way down into the water.
@acme663ryo
@acme663ryo 7 лет назад
Does your pump run at all? If so connect a line to the output and blast it for a day or so to see if the sand clears. If it runs but no water the sand might have worn off the impeller. Or the down pipe might be plugged like it was in this video.

Yes the pump runs. I unplugged to not burn it up. water leaks out of the top of it also, where the p vc goes into it. This guy just left us high and dry. No pun intended.
@acme663ryo
@acme663ryo 7 лет назад
You need to be sure where the problem is. if water is leaking out of the top but no water is getting to the house then something in the house is wrong. Opening up an outside hose bib will work. Spend some time on the net looking up generic simple pump setup. If no water from the bib then remove one of the plugs on the pump itself and see if water jets out. It is going to make a mess if no water the the pump has lost prime. Pour water down into the pump through the plug while it is running. leave the outside hose bibs open while you do this. Once water stars jetting out screw the plug back on and see uf the bibs start flowing. if not repeat. if it will not prime something is wrong at the bottom of the well.
@kellibramlett219
@kellibramlett219 7 лет назад
Gpa said, when he takes the plug off, where you prime, there is water there, but it doesn't JET OUT. Said he didn't have hose connection open, and there's no water going into the tank. Also the pipe that goes deep, is very loose and sloppy. Don't know if THAT matters. Can't believe you're answering. Very much appreciate.

@@acme663ryo Hi, was just wondering if you could explain how to flush a "new" shallow well sand point? Mine has lots of back pressure, even tho it's in pure sand. Hand pump works fine. J5 jet pump only trickles. Have blown 90 lbs of air into the 24' free standing pipe, along with another garden hose, from another well.. About 7' of standing water in the 1 1/4 pipe, just doesn't refill very quickly. As mentioned, brand new well, and new 1 1/4 X 4' sand point. Thanks.
@acme663ryo
@acme663ryo 4 года назад
@@joequillun7790 Strange, so the hand pump works but not the jet pump on the same well? How long is the pipe from the mid point of the sand tip to the highest point in the system before the pump? 24 feet is right at the max but I wouldn't expect a hand pump to work properly at that max either. Are you sure it is properly primed and that all of the connections are tight? If it can suck even a small amount of air from one of the joints the system will fail to pull properly. I have also hear of foot valves being installed reversed but again then the hand pump would be useless also. My best off the cuff idea is 1: priming and 2 sucking air. Build an adapter so you can screw a garden house into one of the small ports on the nose of the pump with a valve to shut it off then hit is with full hose water (or some gravity feed system) and run the pump, see if it takes. Then I would try rubbing the joints with dawn dish soap and see if you get bubbles from the line.
@joequillun7790

@@acme663ryo Thanks for the reply and the advice Nelson. Quick description of my system. 1 1/4", sand point 27' deep from ground level to tip of 4' point. Water at 19', or 8' in the pipe. All new. Forget about the pump and above ground level. When I force water down my pipe, with a garden hose to the point, it backs up, and over flows the pipe above ground. Is this normal for a new well? I made an adapter at the top of my pipe, and force water and 90 lbs of air into the pipe, and the air, and/or water will blow back. Water will come in a at a slow rate, (hand pump works fine), but the jet pump draws more water than the point can provide. I've put it all back together, and am gunna try running it at a slow rate, (off and on for a few days) to see if maybe I can clear some of the area around the outside of the point.
@joequillun7790

Well, here I am a week or so later, been running the pump for many hours, and still it only pulls 2 gal. a minute. I can run a couple small Hunter sprinklers, but that's about it. Installed my holding tank, and the pressure won't build over 30 lbs. I'm now concerned about my 1/2 hp Goulds pump. In the very beginning, I split the deep well housing frt impeller section from it, and installed a shallow well frt half. (Old one from the past.). It came off a J-10 1 hp pump, and the nozzle/ jet, and venturi/diffuser that came with it, are calibrated for the J-10. I wonder if the size difference would cause my low flow problem? The Goulds P/Ns are different, and I had one experienced technician said it possibly could. I'm having a hard time finding the 2 components to purchase. ANO17, AD3731 for the J-5 pump. Just thought I'ld run it by you Mr. Nelson.
