In this video, I try a more differentiated approach of this eternal subject! I think that it’s not as complicated to decide whether using Plugins and a DAW is better than the actual hardware?
It depends on the use case, the results you are after and your personal situation.
At the end of the video, I prepared a very special blind tasting with an analogue vintage synthesizer from the 80ies and two VST-Plugins! Enjoy!

What you are saying is just so spot on correc! Roland yes please allow us to have this feature! I would love to set bar length and record to the pad!! That would be life changing and it would give MPC a run for its money.

Personally, I prefer... BOTH! They both have pros and cons. I play a Yamaha MX88 synth but also use plugins. I can't tell the difference in a mix and don't care - I like the low latency of a real keyboard and the power of plugins.
@budgetkeyboardist

...and I know the MX88 is a Rompler and not considered a "real" keyboard by some, but they're wrong. :)

I use mostly software as a result of not owning any synths. :( If the software is good enough, it can be very impressive sounding.

I personally prefer hardware(on the cheap! Take my money, Uli!!!😂), but I am slowly building a hybrid hardware/Ableton setup for studio recording and live gigs.

Through my iPhone speakers while driving a car… I preferred A but in a mix, wouldn’t be able to tell. Looking forward to the answers

A = Roland, B = Arturia, and I don't have experience with TAL, but C = TAL? They all sound nice. Hallo from a long time Belgian techno fan, hailing from New Zealand.

Greetings from the Illinois/Wisconsin border, where there are many German people. Software is plenty good enough. I have a several hardware synths/drums because I like playing with gear interfaces, I like the immediacy, and I also think of them as 'band members'. But my first DAW was Reason and I loved all of the virtual rack hardware it has. I keep it running on an old WIn XP machine in my studio and treat it like any other hardware I own. The debate over which is better seems silly anymore since they are indistinguishable sonically. If you can't make good music with plugins, hardware will not help you.

Im totally not an expert on juno sounds but my humble guess that hardware juno is A (but closer to the end i started to think that b is might be right too) Or maybe A is just louder 😅😅😅😅
@winesynths
@winesynths Год назад
Technically, speaking loudness, I tried to match them as close as possible. To avoid loudness differences, they even went through the same analogue Warm Audio Bus Compressor! 😁 The rest ist the actual difference in sound. I doubt that even any expert will be capable to find out the correct answer other than by gut feel! At least with this type of sounds. The Chorus still shows differences in some crucial details. But this also might vary from Juno to Juno.

How come that I missed this episode? Maybe because I do not really enjoy using computers tbh. Holding an engineering master degree in computer science and also being a #DiplomIngenieur - I certainly like technology, BUT... using a computer for making music is something I never really liked. And I really tried! I started using Ableton Live when it was still a beta version and back then it was mindblowing what you could do with it. LIVE, in real-time. --- Now, I see computers as powerful and universal tools. But as a musical instrument, they failed on me or I failed using them as such. Controllers do not really help much. a) the sound: for me plugins always sound like they have this "sonic cage" around them. They don't feel open and wide, in neither dimension. Frequency-wise, loudness-range-wise. I do not know why. This is especially true for emulations, both in sound-generating and sound-mangling software. For starters, I really like what an LA-2A does to most sound sources. I haven't found a software version that even comes close! Whereas the original units I used where always in that zone, even though they were from different eras, being in different maintainence-states and such. b) After a normal day at work where I look at computer screens a lot, I get tired very quickly when I try to make music with a computer. On the opposite, when I fire up the hardware rig, it excites me and I get more awake and time flies. With a computer, I turn that thing of after a couple of minutes and call it a day. Tried this many times, always the same results with both directions. --- I really enjoy using the original machines and I am a Roland-fan, too. Nothing like the 909 (my religion) and the 808 (my love affair) or of course the 303. Relaxingly-pleasing and also "brutally" direct "in your face" *at the very same time*. I have no clue why that is 😀
