Wow, the art direction here beyond exceeds that of many of the works by the tops studios. Every frame looks like it could be, well, framed. The style really gives off the impression of a cute but also alien world, really emphasizing the childlike wonder of being born into a new place, as well as the alienness of everything to us beings its prehistoric setting. That fuzzy grass, the felt-like leaves and the stylized abstraction of the feather texture on the little oviraptor give everything the cozy feeling of the knit/various cloths of a baby's nursey. This comfortable warmth of blankets makes it all the more powerful as the little oviraptor is slowly introduced to the harsher elements in life. Starting with the introduction of the first non-plush texture, the wood-like figure of an adult oviraptors skeleton. Introducing grief with uncertainty. The way the raptor is animated clearly shows their mix of emotions here, not sure what they're looking at, but filled with feelings they don't understand yet, the familiarity of the figure in front of them keeping them hesitantly in their spot while a sense of dread and overwhelment eventually take over and lead them to retreat. The detail that they look over at the skeleton and have this moment immediately after seeing their own reflection is such a brilliant but easy to overlook detail. But as they run they're surrounded by more and more of the harsh new reality, until they're faced with an entirely desolate bare landscape with no trace of their cozy nursery in sight, with the raptor looking as small and uncertain as they have the entire animation. The change to night lighting when the raptor finally returns to its nursery downtrodden keeps the once comfortable place from feeling like the safehaeven it was when the world was new and warm. And the little raptor hides its face in the egg from the world which brought it so much joy, as though wanting to return and shield itself. Only after encountering the evidence of others does the raptor return to high spirits. Every little detail is beautiful crafted and highly integrated with how the artists chose to visually represent them. Although the obvious story take away is about grief and loneliness, I think the subidea, about the ebbs and flows of life as an innocent youth learns about the harshness but also the warmth of life is even more brilliantly shown.
This is so incredible that when a baby thinked he could be last but he finds out that the adults already laid eggs so then the first one sees some of them hatched and then he sees 2th hatchling at the end
I have never grown so attached to a creature so quickly. You have no idea of the dread I felt during the second half, I was so scared for this little guy!
I love the colors and lighting in this first off, and the artistic gentle style is so soft and it really adds to that whimsical fantasy feel. I love this lil fella :( The music score is also just right too.
I'm sorry but I don't think this person will (the one who animated it). ESMA Movies is actually animation class/studio in France (I might be wrong I might not). So they teach student to do basic animation, anatomy, color scheme, etc and the final one (thesis) is to do short animation. You know in college, before graduate, you do the final products/design/etc? Yeah. So what I see is, in the future there will be *NOT* a full series or sequels. 🙏🏼
Great short. I also want to let you know that you accidentally wrote Nicolas Delabeye in the directors twice but forgot to add Pierre Masclaux (in the video description).
