Christ almighty every time someone shows a plunge cut there's a cavalcade of that takes too long comments. These are homeowners playing it safe. We know you're super awesome and would have the tree down in 3 milliseconds. Unfortunately no one gives a shit.

Rushing it and not being as safe is a recipe for getting hurt or killed. Trust me there's a ton of numbskulls that aren't as cautious. It doesn't always end well.

A lot of people are knocking on this guy for his new gear and inexperience. I believe the ones giving praise and helpful tips are the real professionals. The ones talking down to him are probably the day drunks who have been half assed fellers for 20 years. Whatever trade we choose to be a part of we all start out green. You gotta give the man a chance. Instead of putting him down, help lift him up.

There are many idiots on RU-vid who think it was their job to criticize other's mistakes even if there aren't any considerable mistakes - as you can see in the example of this video. The mistake for them maybe is that this guy is able to handle a chainsaw at this young age which themselves haven't been able to do.

I love seeing the willingness to wear his PPE. He's also getting off on the right foot with that plunge cut. Way more control of exactly WHEN the tree goes over. Suspect by now his process has become more efficient and felling a tree has become a well thought out natural process. Only thing I'd do differently is cut the strap and retreat about 20 feet while it's going over. Nice job.

He did a great job. There is always going to be someone who can do something faster than someone else. Should the guy that can do this in 3 minute call the guy who takes 2 minutes a bunch of names? Subsequently, the guy who can do this in one minute make fun of the guy that takes 2 minutes? It looked to me, this guy was having fun. If he was, he had fun longer than the guys that took 2 minutes or 4 minutes.
The only thing I think was wrong was the wedge placement the bore cut is one of the safest ways to cut a tree down it is almost the only way we teach our newer guys to fell a tree it's not just for leaning trees it will help trees not kick back from the wedge cut out from the look of the video this could have been a training or a practice using the bore cut technique it took longer than I would expect one of our guys to cut a tree of that size down but I would rather see someone going slow and have a tree fall where they want it than get in a hurry and have an accident
that sigh at the end says a lot... excellent demonstration of a common experience on the learning curve... there is a natural tendency for the tip of the bar to point down as the plunge begins.. just have to make a mental note to make sure the bar is perfectly horizontal just before starting the plunge. Its pretty much the last thing you do in the process

I have been telling myself for about 15 to 20 yrs now tht there has to be a way better saw then the 460, for its weight class. Been hard pressed to find it since. So after yrs of using MI e I finally broke into it and trimmed the engine & ports. Now I know why this saw is the ki g of the 70cc class. From what I have figured out on the oem stock cylinder there is plenty of room to port the shit out of it if one may choose to do so. Even if not a very basic few mods will increase throttle response a lot and also gives saw more chain speed. Now only to figure out a bigger crank to put in it.
I just cut trees for firewood and I've been doing it for about 40+ years. I've never even heard of a plunge cut until I happened to watch some videos. I can see the value of a plunge cut when you doing it to establish the hinge. And in some videos they do the plunge cut, and then cut the tree from the back in to meet the plunge cut. And in somebody videos like this one I think they do the plunge cut and then just walk the cut around the back of the tree. It seems like you would have to be really careful as you're walking the cut around the back of the tree not to have the tip cut forward into your hinge. As might happen if you were tired or inexperienced. I've cut rotten trees that virtually exploded when I hit that last little bit in the middle that was holding them up. is a plunge cut recommended when you think that the tree might be rotting at the base?!
In Germany we call the technique that the guy in the video has used something like "safety felling technique". You can use this technique on almost every tree you want to take down. If the tree is expected to be rotten at the base you always have to leave enough holding wood, so you would beginn with your cut further away from the hinge and watch the sawdust. The tree will stand safely after setting that first plunge cut. Now you can deside what's the safest way to continue, removing more of the holding wood or not. Then you can cut in the oppotite direction, but not completely through, you'll leave a few centimeters of stabil wood, what we call "Halteband" in Germany. I don't know how you would call it... Would translate it with "holding belt". You cut it through from behind the tree after setting some wedges if needed. Its a very safe way to fell trees, maybe the safest.
The plunge or boring cut is used when the tree has a forward lean.This guy seemed to use it just for the hell of it. Pretty dangerous considering he looks like an inexperienced cutter. stay safe mate,and stick to small trees till you build up your skills and experience level

In Sweden we save a corner, rather than the full back part, which gives room for a wedge at the back, giving it the most leverage. We call it the "Safe corner technique" and it's the only method teached on the Swedish chain saw license courses.

Some may consider it too slow, and/or finicky, but done correctly it is very safe and gives the feller good control over the tree. Using this technique I've never had a barber chair and the trees generally fell where I wanted them (a very few exceptions for rotten trees when the hinge failed). I've also found that taking one last look around the area before cutting the trigger has proven to be a valuable safety tool. This as I've twice had people walk into the danger area while making the cut back cut. I hate to think what would have happened if the back cut was made entirely through the back with no trigger... In regards to this particular video I do have to wonder why he worked from that side of the tree for the face cuts... he couldn't take advantage of the "hang" of the saw in the handle bar for the top cut and he had to push the saw into the tree for the bottom cut instead of letting the saw pull itself in. It made me wonder if he is left handed... His plunge cut was well controlled and appears to be reasonably level (the camera is canted in much of this video!). Regarding the hearing protection, when viewed full screen it appears that he is wearing plugs... not a bad thing on hot days as muffs are hot.
I know this video is 8 years old and I haven't seen any of your other videos yet but look up bucking Billy Ray to learn how to cut down a tree . Hopefully that's the only tree you cut down that way

standing on the wrong side of the tree for the directional cut directional cut abit too shallowwhy aren't your ear defenders down? whilst making plunge cut, you kept leaning around the front of the tree, which isn't 'best practice' plunge cut going down on an angle, needs to be level walking around the tree to start cutting from other side?? 3.58 revved saw whilst walking around the tree, chainbrake wasn't onwalked back around the tree once most of the holding timber was severed ! a more weighty tree could have barbered in a high wind..The final bit of timber was cut whilst standing directly behind the treethe idea of this cut is that you can perform it on a leaning tree and take out the risk of it barber chairing by cutting the part of the timber which is holding the weight last, another benefit is that you can perform this cut from standing on one side taking out the need to walk around the tree.I don't mean to put this comment on like some kind of felling god with 60+ years experience and I'm not trying to talk down to anyone, but I hope this points out some mistakes and next time you feel more ready and know what to look out for :)
You set your felling direction ( initial cut ) from the right side of the tree... not the left.. and the plunge or bore cut is also performed initially from the right side of the tree.. he is making it more harder for himself, rather than letting the saw do the work for him.. Observing his hesitation on the bore cut.. he is not experience.. or least not trained or taught correctly.
Well, I'm experienced with that helmet, and the hearing protectors on it aren't that great anyway. Ear plugs work way better than the stock-ear-protectors on that helmet. People buy that helmet for the face screen protection and head protection. Also, he probably wanted to listen to the tree, especially since it was dead, to make sure it wasn't going to fall prematurely and unpredictably.
It's not too bad. But to be honest you're better off removing the face shield and wearing a pair of safety glasses because I find wood still gets under and into my eyes. Though the visor does protect your face in the event of a kickback.

+SlappyHuck No lie Huck. I just bought myself a new pair of chaps and they are very shiny too, but they are the 5th pair I've had. They take a while to get broke in good and get comfortable. And yes those Muffs are hotter than H in the summer so use ear plugs and keep the Muffs for winter.
New saw, new chaps, new tape, new hardhat with safety shield, new ear muffs that were NOT used, gloves look new? It looks like someone watched a youtube video and took the visa to the store..oh and the wedge was useless the way it was used..Just a few observations.
You would not be working for me! That tree should not have taken more than three or four minutes. The technique used is for large trees that lean hard. Then it would have taken four minutes max.

This operator should get some experience under his belt before he tries to show off his unrefined skills. A competent, experienced feller would have had this tree on the ground in under a minute. It has taken this fool over 5 minutes and he is still playing with it. Way too tentative!!!
