I was hoping the long Pluto vid would be further along by now but it's mostly scripted. Trying to get that out ASAP.

Hey y'all, still figuring out what sort of style works for book club. Would love to hear ya feedback. What works, what doesn't, need panels on screen, be more serious, whatever ya feeling. Here to improve and make these a good time to watch. Cheers!

I think two series that are quite polar opposite might keep things fresh in the video For example Berserk and usogui can work because one is a sad fantasy epic and second one is an exciting gambling manga On a side note Are your criticism of "Pluto" "subjective"(like you didn't like this happened in a story it's pretty subjective... or are the criticism flaws of the story like plotholes, inconsistent themes? I am yet to read Pluto So that's why I was asking? Like are the criticism by you the same like the criticism usually made for monster by other people? Otherwise a solid vid

Hey love the idea of the book club, have to work now and will listen to it later. Have you thought about doing maybe like a livestream after you upload your video so that your viewers who also read the books can have a discussion with you?
@SeaGee

I'd love to do that. It'll largely depend on what kind of community wants to be around this. Likewise it would be cool to have a Discord set up as another place to share and voice opinions on what we're reading. It's the types of things where if there's a real interest, then I'll get it going.

Considering the focus of the video this may be a bit of scope, but would like to see your thoughts on some of the changes the anime adaptation made to the story. The one improvement I remember from the anime is Adolf finding out who fired the cannon from the anti-robot leader instead of his son reading about it in his textbook when he happened to be around.
@SeaGee

I'm actually going through the anime right now. Just watched ep 1 last night. There will be a short section on my thoughts but if the first episode is any indication, there won't be too much to talk about. Also glad they changed how Adolf finds out. It's one of those overly convenient moments in the manga for sure.

Pluto/Abullah/Goji are one of the weakest villains in Urasawa's work (in my opinion at least).

Does the manga not have that scene of Gesicht finding the guy who says “you killed my infant child!” I thought I would ok for this vid just watching the anime but maybe not. Our opinions are completely different. This’ll prob throw my opinion out the window for most, but I kinda think Pluto is more well done than Monster

There's a similar scene that comes to mind. it's one of only (iirc) two brief moments we get on the ground in the pain in Persia. Based off the anime, how did you feel it was handled? Curious to know if the Persian war came across better in that. Also I'm just going through the anime now. From what I understand they did change some things and cut some things. I'm only one episode in and there's been some interesting changes already.

@@SeaGee thanks for responding! I thought the Persian War came across better in that aspect in the anime, but I also might just be biased towards Pluto since this was thing that introduced me to Urasawa’s work. Overall I don’t dislike the last third of the story nearly as much as you do (which is fine), but I’m wondering if the anime will change your opinion or if it’s just me liking Pluto a lot lol Love what you’re doing here with book club btw and I’m looking forward to more :)

Urasawa using an anti proton bomb seems to be a bad omen in his stories. In my opinion pluto has the worst ending out of all the big 4 urasawa books. My biggest problem was how the story took a back seat to hammer in the message in a very cheesy and preachy way. Although I do really like the way gesitch's memory plays a role in it, even if the logic of it doesnt add up. I remember Urasawa saying that he doesnt plan out his stories and often seeks to surprise himself, and once a story stops suprising him, he ends it. I feel that explains why in his endings, he often puts unneeded twists or plot points near the end and wraps things up as quickly as possible. This strategy of writing is a real double edged sword as it works really well throughout his stories, but causes the endings to suffer. It explains why he starts a new series while halfway through working on his previous one. I remember also in an interview he stated that he often seeks to get an emotional response out of the reader in his endings rather than something that gives the answers to all the details in the mystery.

I'd agree, I think Pluto's ending is definitely the weakest of his big 4. Its probably the only one I would call bad. And you're right it does get very on the nose and a bit preachy about it's message. That line about Atoms hatred being stronger than Pluto's hatred, I mean yeah the manga just ordered a triple cheese pizza. That's good insight on Urasawas endings. I love the man's work but his endings are one of the weakest parts of the story usually.

@@SeaGeei think part of the dip in the last volume was that Urasawa didnt want to stray too far from the story he was adapting. It spent far more time on a one off character for a story thats supposed to be a showdown between Atom and Pluto. Like we created this murder mystery with political intrigue, but we have to bring it back to this simple saturday morning cartoon conflict. Perhaps its what fans of astro boy or tezuka productions wanted to see but for newcommers it was unengaging/jarring. The last volume was very hard to get through at the end.

Yes! Absolutely agree. Maybe the biggest problem I have with the manga is how the transition from Gesicht to Atom is handled. If Atom was going to be the one to take the story to a conclusion, he needed a lot more setup.

tbh i am in a minority that actually loves urasawa ending yes they are a bit weak but thematically they are well built the details factor i dont really mind much i love the ambiguity which he adds for the story to fit in there are many other great authors like george rr martin who follow much the same style of not planning he is pretty much the stephen king of manga

@@mr.gamerkabir8142 i dont really feel there was alot fo ambiguity to plutos ending, considering how it resolves the entire mystery around pluto and goji in one chapter. His ending are often a mixed bag for me althought monster is the only one i can confidently say is good.

Thank god I'm not the only person who found the "robot k*k" laughably corny and a weird gross false equivalence on part of the story With that said, a lot of your criticisms are giving me second thoughts about the manga's ending which I'd love to re-read but I'm swimming in media I have yet to finish
@ngnfgn7489

The anime at least has the sense to cut out the line where they say "its like a modern version of the klan". I think like the ending its something ive heard is in line with tezuka's writing style. Again sort of the kinks in being faithful to aspects of the original but also trying to update it to be more grounded.

I'd like to recommend any of Nobuyuki Fukumoto's works for a future month. Especially "The Legend of the Strongest, kurosawa". It doesn't have any gambling whatsoever, so it differs greatly from his other series.The manga is rather about a middle-aged man slowly inspiring the people around him with his burning determination. Another interesting read would be "Back when you called us devils". It's about an amnesiac that lost 15 years worth of memory and slowly realizes that he may have done horrible things in his past. I think both those mangas are not too long and have enough content to have a meaningful analysis of. Anyway, great video! Can't wait to reread Berserk.

I felt for the Persian robots but I understand not being on their side due to not enough time being dedicated to them. Seems like a missed opportunity but that's easy to say as a reader after the fact.

Urasawa had to only derive one arc I think if it was his original work He would have made it more explicit

What would would be your top 10 mangas?
@SeaGee
@SeaGee 8 месяцев назад
I haven't ever done a ranking but some manga that come to mind: Monster, Billy Bat, Naruto, Hito Hitori Futari, The Climber, Real, Takopi's Original Sin, Massacre Happy End, FMA, and The Breaker part 1 (even though it's a Manwha). That would be a rough take on my top 10 in no real order.
