A few if you guys have asked about the Y travel you will get with the PM-30.
Stock without the Way guards is about 9.75". The CNC kits nut holder is a bit thicker so you loose a little there.
The PM-30 head is not really centered on the travel its about a inch forward which is good if you want to cut the base for more travel.
The 30 has a lot of room to cut the mill. If you want to run Nema 34 motors then you will hit the Y mount if you cut over 1.35" it will bottom on the Nema 34 mount which you dont want.
With the mill cut at 1.35" from stock the open travel is 11.5", which is great for a smaller mill. For Nema 23 motors you can cut to 2.2" and the double ball nuts will still be OK. That is over 12" of Y. Kind of crazy for a mid size mill.

I was catching up on the body of your video work and cnc kits. Nice bit of kit, by the way. That being said, why is it that the "Y" and "Z" ballscrew kits do not seem to incorporate a support opposite the motor side of the ballscrew? The "X" axis is always supported at both ends, but not the others, why? If I've missed something, please show me what I missed or explain the reason for the lack of support on the Y and Z. Thanks.

On the PM-30 the Y is a fairly short screw so you dont need a second set of bearing to prevent screw whip. The X will have a second support bearing. The Z does not have one. You can look up screw whip and its generally not a problem at the speeds we would run the mills for the length of the screws.

Perfect timing. I was just reviewing the PM mills for starting a conversion when I saw your video pop up. I really like the work you have done on mill conversions. I'm torn between the PM25MV, PM727M, and the PM30MV. The 25 seems to light and the 30 is getting pretty expensive for a conversion. @CNC4XR7 and others have done PM727M's. I am still torn.

BTW The Y mount looks great. What mill do you use to make your parts?

I try not to talk about mills that I have not used. From the pictures I have seen the base of the 727 is lighter than the 30. The 30 base is a vary efficient design but the column is not too large. From what I have seen the 727 is OK. The PM-30 is around 460 pounds on the bench.

The pm30 is already belt driven so you won't have to convert to that later. The pm25 is belt driven as well but it is smaller and you should really decide now if the smaller size won't limit you later on. The pm727 is NOT belt driven so if you do a belt conversion on it later, it will cost you which will wipe out the cost difference between it and the pm30. Most people will go to a 3ph motor will a belt drive in their conversions. If you have any plans of this, the pm30 is one step closer. It looks like the pm30 is on back order so you will probably have to wait a bit for it. I have a pm940 on order and it might be here at the end of the year. Maybe the pm30's will be here then too. You would need to contact PM for that. The bigger size of the pm30 and it already having a belt drive would be my first choice of the 3.

@@halfstep67 Good points. I did contact PM about the PM30MV basic without DRO in mid November. They said then that it was about 5 weeks out.

Nice looking motor mounts Dave. You do good work. The pm30 looks like a very solid mill with descent travels. It looks like it will hold a vise well with it having 17" from spindle to table without getting cramped. I wished the pm940 had the belt drive option from the factory.

Been watching your videos and now I really want to do a conversion:) Do you still offer the kits? How do you order? Thinking either the pm30 or the 940.

Great video, do you make or sell this kits? Anything for the Rong Fu RF30.. round colum mill drill same as the Grizzly G)706? thanks

The RF-30/31 is hard to CNC with the Z round column making you feed the quill which is always a bit lame. I dont plan on a kit for that one. Just to show that your skill is as important as your mill, this link is to a RF-31 that has had a bit of work done to it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l2PWuqgviS8.html The 31 is a good mill in a lot of ways it just has more limits than needed today.

Is it possible you could do a size comparison video of the PM-25 and PM-30? I'm ready to purchase a mill soon and PM said the 25 won't be in stock till mid July. The PM-30 is in stock now just a bit more than I wanted to spend. Thank you!

@@cduemig1 I sure did. All said and done, I'm at 10" in the Y now and with my spacer for my head I'm perfectly centered in travel on my machine.
