Why you converts get offended if the PM tells that Sunday is a Christian holiday? Everyone knows Sunday as a holiday was started by the British when India was their colony. Do you know the Congress party even used to present the budget at 5 pm IST when the LSE opens for trading. Congress did not change anything left behind by the British. That is why this party is an extension of a British rule. Unlike Christians, which is a day for Sunday mass/prayers, Sunday religious classes etc for the Christians, it does not have any religious significance for any other communities. However 85% Indians follow Sunday as most of the Christian countries are closed on this day. The PM was referring to this. Therefore, why you converts get worked up?

Why Sunday has a holiday? The Roman Emperor Constantine made Sunday a public day of rest in 321 BCE. This contradicts the Christian and Jewish tradition that Saturday is a sabbath, or rest day. Regardless of whether it is viewed as the first or last day of the week, Sunday was named after the Sun god Solis. Its Anglo-Saxon name is Sonnandæg. After a 7-year long struggle, on 10th June 1890, British Government declared sunday as a holiday. What's surprising is that Indian government never issued any orders regarding this holiday. According to the International Organization for Standardization ISO 8601, Sunday is the 7th and also the last day of the week. Again Friday is a day of prayer, and the Caliph al-MuCtadid is said to have ordered offices to close on this day. The choice of Friday may have been based on its pre-Islamic role as a market day, when local tribes would gather in a central location. The Prophet Muhammad is also quoted as saying that Friday is the best day the sun rises over, because it was the day Allah created Adam and expelled him from paradise.

Sunday is a Christian holiday- this is true. Just like Friday is Islamic and Saturday is Jewish holiday. Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains- the native religions of India have no such weekly holidays.

Actually total number of NRI plus people of Indian decent in foreign countries... Including Xtians and Non-Xtian countries is 35 million. In other words, less than 1% of India's total population. As for what those Sanatanis are doing, well considering they just built World's second largest temple in US, I wouldnt count on them convrtng to Xtianity. In fact many Xtians are becoming Sanatanis..

Why? Because convention, economics, business etc. There is no economic utility in shifting holidays to other days of the week because unlike monotheist religions - the concept of weekly off isnt traditionally how Hindus or native religious people took holidays. Traditionally it was seasonal holidays or based on the tithi, Poornima was usually celebrated or considered auspicious. But the fact is undeniable - Sundays became the weekly holiday due to their religious significance to Christians, just as Friday is for Muslims or Saturday for Jews.

Philomina John UAE used to observe Friday as their weekend for several decades and all expats living in that country didn't object. Firstly the PM did only say that Sunday is the Christian holiday and why you guys feel anything objectionable ? Tell me is Sunday not the day when you guys compulsorily go to the church? Your priests even keep a track of those who do not attend the Sunday prayers and punish the non attendees at the time of wedding, burial etc? But there are various harassments meted out non attendees as the christian priests interfere in their matrimonial alliances, as they refuse to perform wedding rituals, refusing to buy the dead etc and they allow these religious functions only after apologising and paying penalties. Yes, Christians in Gulf countries attend mass on Fridays, but if India declares weekend on a day which is important to the majority community, you guys will create a furore.
