As PM Modi departs for his two-day trip to France Thursday, a look is warranted at India’s relationship with the European nation through the ages. In Ep 1270 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains how France, now an important strategic ally for India, has been one of its most steadfast, if transactional friends.

@arunrao487
@arunrao487 Год назад
Though most people don't get this, but, secularism itself is an odd concept for a country like India. We just consider all sanskaras as perfectly acceptable (which is a much better than 'tolerance' which sounds like a compromise) and welcome. A better philosophy which fits with the Indian ethos is PLURALISM.
@RanjitNayak
@RanjitNayak Год назад
Good point - Secularism is a christian concept - sepeartion of church and state. Key word is church. So by definition if you are not part of the church, the state actively works against you. Thats what you see in India - psuedo secularism, which this reporter claims to be great and endorses. After all not much can be expected from someone who is colonized and thinks of himself as elite.

There were several French generals who served for Indian Kings in the 1800s and 1900s. An interesting one was Benoit Du Boigne, who served Mahadji Shinde (Scindia) and was very successful, before the French Revolution caused internal conflict in the forces he had built (with officers taking opposing political positions), and Mahadji Shinde's untimely death which led him back to his homeland.

On the J&K reorganization, I don't understand what we mean by waving on the Russian part ? From as much as I recollect, when China called the UNSC meeting, Russia was the first one to keep its foot down. The Russian ambassador came out to the press & said 'somethings are best left untouched'. Even if we look at official statements, US, UK, France & even UN Secretary General insisted it to be a bilateral issue between India & Pakistan, China ofcourse opposed it. It was Russia which said the changes are carried out within the remits of the Indian constitution. I understand Russia getting close to China on many other issues like energy trade, Indo/Asia-Pacific, etc. However, it would be a miscalculation to expect the support that Russia extends to us on the J&K issue from any other P-5 country. I also get the point about whetheror not we need such steadfast support at UNSC. I understand Amb. Akbaruddin being there at the time saying this about Britain, but can you please check if he said the same about the Russians.

And France could not afford to look like hypocrites if they had joined other Western powers in condemning India's nuclear tests. Lucrative arms deals will always win love from France. Had Indo-French relationship gone cold in the 1960s only due to France selling military equipments to Pakistan or due to French colonialism in Africa and Asia? France was extremely reluctant to let go of its colonies and had to fight bitter wars, especially in Algeria and Vietnam. I'm not sure if India really accepted French colonialism in Africa and Asia. The subject of French colonialism and India's approach to it was completely ignored in this episode. France still holds tremendous sway in their ex-colonies in Africa which are independent nations today. It's kind of a quasi colonialism still. I don't think present day India cares about that but a post independence India in 1950s and 60s would have been very touchy on the subject of colonialism.

BBC is a public broadcaster funded by licensing fees collected from British households and other commercial sources. But they are not "state owned" the way our Doordarshan is. The British government has almost no influence on its programming.

France is a principled country of great people that looked after their people, maintained dignity of the social republic and voted with its principles in UNSC. Sarkozy's Presidency destroyed 5 decades of beautiful peace without being target terrorism or anger of rest of the world. France did not need to project power due to the respect rest of the world.

Let's not forget the Transactionalism in the relationship (It's not a bad thing, good relations are mutually beneficial) France has security interests in the Indo-Pacific. They have reunion and Seychelles in IOR which benefits from increased presence of Indian Navy and New Caledonia in the Pacific where France takes advantage from Indian Navy logistics.

Spoiler. I wouldnt extend the romance with france to pre 1947 as sg does. The french n British exchanged indian cities as accords they signed in europe as if india was theirs to toy with. Colonial france was way more parasitic to their colonies compared to the British . Check the plight of all middle east, african which were french colonies.
