The relationship between India and Russia is characterized by a longstanding history of strategic cooperation and mutual support. And to strengthen these tie, Prime minister Narendra Modi is making his first trip to Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine war. He is set to attend a private dinner with President Vladimir Putin.
India's foreign secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said, The 22nd annual summit between India and Russia would provide an opportunity to the two leaders to review the whole range of bilateral issues, including defence, trade linkages, investment ties, energy cooperation, S&T (science and technology)
Russia and India have had strong ties since the Cold War. Recently, New Delhi's significance as a trading partner for Moscow has increased, especially since Russian troops entered Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia has been a significant supplier of discounted oil and weapons to India. However, its increasing isolation from Western countries and closer ties with China have affected its long-standing partnership with India.
In recent years, the United States and its Western allies have strengthened relations with India, viewing it as a counterbalance to China's growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, they have urged India to reduce its ties with Russia.
Prime Minister Modi, who was re-elected last month, last visited Russia in 2019 and hosted President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi two years later, just before the invasion of Ukraine.
Noe if we talk about India's take on the Russia's relationship with the world then India has avoided directly criticizing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and has chosen not to vote on United Nations resolutions condemning Moscow.
However, Russia’s war in Ukraine has affected India in a human way too. In February, India stated it was urging Russia to release some of its citizens who had taken on "support roles" with the Russian military. There were reports that some of them were killed after being compelled to fight in Ukraine.
But yes, Russia's deepining ties with China have raised concerns for India. China and India, the world’s two most populous countries, are fierce rivals vying for strategic influence in South Asia.
India is a member of the Quad group along with the United States, Japan, and Australia. This group aims to counterbalance China's increasing assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region.
As Prime Minister Modi engages in talks with President Putin, the outcomes will likely shape India's foreign policy strategy in the coming years. The challenge remains in balancing regional stability with global commitments.
