In this sketch, we’ll venture into a place far, far away- 20,000 leagues under the sea, to be exact. It’s here where we’ll take a deep dive into the presentation, causes, and workup for pneumonia, which includes community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and aspiration pneumonia. Learn about the diverse microbes that can cause CAP, from typical bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae to atypical culprits such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae. We discuss the different history and presentations under HAP and VAP, and which patients are most susceptible to aspiration pneumonia, followed by what to expect on imaging, which often includes finding infiltrates on chest X-ray.
