Having teachers from a different country is not the best solution. I had one in high school and the students payed him no mind cause we couldn't understand his accent and you could see the visible frustration, a small group of us made it look like we were learning to don't make him feel bad

True and you have the other set who dislikes the country their working in with it showing in their interaction with students. Once had a EDPM teacher who was from Nigeria an instead of teaching us he would proudly muse to us the luxurious that Jamaica was lacking in comparison with his country.

My sister left to teach in the US around 10 yrs ago (she's bought her house in 3-4 yrs and is currently doing her PhD). Since she left, roughly 20 of her DIRECT teacher friends have left Jamaica for US, CA, and Dubai. I would NEVERRRR be a teacher, as a teen I remember on weekends our house being packed with my sister's friends complaining about lesson plans, the management of the school, the education ministry, etc. The floors would be covered in homework/exam paper to mark, them greating charts to heng in the ir classroom, or cutting out games activities for their student. Teaching is a 24hrs job with loooow pay and disrespectful students and parents.

The brain drain has never stopped in Jamaica, & unfortunately never will, not only among teachers but in all professions. 'The more things change, the more they remain the same.' I remember from 1993 a medical technician lamenting the fact that Jamaica was only training its lab techs & nurses to go abroad as out of a group of 18 that she was training, only 2 said they were staying in Jamaica, after their compulsory service. Sadly, in every profession, Jamaica has lost some of her very best. We pay lip service to our people & even pay some so-called consultants from overseas who at times are not half as qualified & as competent as we are to teach us what they don't know.

@barringtonstewart6167
@barringtonstewart6167 14 дней назад
During the PNPs reign teachers only could receive single digit raises apart from the aligning of public sector workers to the private sector therefore both parties do not recognized the teachers. Younger teachers will never settle here because people are not getting visas to go overseas as they have a mind to so the minute we get the opportunity to move we will. Our curriculum and methods of teaching is too difficult over working the teachers which is totally different from most overseas countries.

Jamaican teachers are attracted to the opportunities to migrate abroad, they are lured with better monetary benefits and so Jamaica now as to make them want to stay here. I for one do not agree with them leaving their country children to suffer, while they go educate other countries children.

You don’t get paid much to be a teacher in Jamaica, should the teacher suffer as well after going to college and earning a professional degree and have to take test to be licensed? That’s a lot to ask of someone. I know a few people who used to be teachers in Jamaica and had to leave Jamaica to be able to come back to Jamaica throughout the year to enjoy it. I love Jamaica, would love to live there, but I’m a teacher, I dont want to be poorer than I am now.

@@angellabeckford2747 I agree. A lot of Jamaicans I know want to come back to Jamaica. That is usually the ultimate goal. @feonasmith9226
@feonasmith9226 13 дней назад
@@jammasia The birth rate has been dropping for years, so yes, we can make an educated guess that the number of students in the system is declining. Those sitting GSAT/PEP has dropped by nearly 16,000 since 2010 when I started tracking it. I would guess that the decline would show up more in younger age groups first before we see it at the high school level. Also out of town/country schools might see it first before urban areas. There is also unequal distribution. Some schools are half empty while others are overcrowded. This teacher shortage may be a great opportunity for the country to start using more technology in education instead of trying to recruit teachers from halfway across the world. Why let the opportunity go to waste.

The " teacher migration crisis" is just political crap talking as usual. Jamaicans as a people has always been migrating for work or a better way of life. As far back as you can imagine. Jamaicans even went to Liberia after slavery for a Better life in Africa. Jamaica has a these things called teaching colleges or schools for teachers, how about... making it easier for anyone interested to become a teacher and facilitate on the job training, then allowing anyone who wants go work free passage and the countries blessing on their new life. We have lots of people who need jobs. We have the Student loan bureau who can help pay for their training. This is simple but, as usual the politicians blame everyone else. The politicians are standing there in all their glory, blaming someone for wanting better and working for it. Nuff respect and big up to all the teachers, we would all be dunce bats and kruff if it wasn't for your hard work and dedication. Put 2 and 2 together, and you see why the politicians don't like the teachers.
