Po Atarau Waiata - Now is the hour 

I remember hearing this song on the radio as a child. Such a pretty melody, but I didn't know and understand the lyrics until I was older. I read that it was sung to New Zealand ANZACs when they were leaving home to go far across the sea to WW1. This song is emotional for me because my Grandpa and his 3 brothers went there too, the youngest served at Gallipoli and then was killed aged 19 died in France. My Grandma's only brother also served and was badly injured in Belgium. When he came home to Australia, he got married and went to live in Gisborne, NZ. 😢😢

1960 I left Auckland for Sydney on the old Wanganella. Yes it rolled on wet grass but it had character. As we left the wharf there was a band playing Now Is The Hour. Hardly a dry eye on board.
